Archie against KFC ?
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:49:10 PM »
I would have posted this in the favourite Random images thread but closer study shows this merits its own thread.

This has to be the first example of Archie taking on a major corporate very head-on, at least for me. What's the background of this story ? It looks like the 70s-80s types. Did KFC really screw up with their food then ?

And how ! I am not a fan of KFC fare unless the chicken bits are small which ensures they are well cooked. All of my encounter with large bits have ended with me throwing the piece in the bin after finding out that it was a bloody as hell.

But I am interested in this story from a historical perspective, KFC must have really gone wrong for Archie to take it out like this.

I remember the background for the story...I think.  Turns out that the bucket of chicken Mr. Weatherbee is carrying was actually a science project that Jughead and Archie were making.  I don't remember what the project was to prove, but it obviously involved some mouldy, disgusting chicken.  Mr. Weatherbee happened to spot it, jumped to conclusions, and it lead to this confrontation.

Hey, don't worry about it...anyone who didn't read the story would logically come to that conclusion too!

Though, part of me wonders if they had KFC's blessing to incorporate the likeness of Colonel Sanders into the comics...there was another story that came out in the 1990s where Jughead works at a KFC knockoff and where he serves a man that looks even more like Colonel Sanders than this guy!

Seems like fair use parody (a legal principal I think certain comic companies should come to recognize as well).

Col. Sanders is pretty famous.  He has a lot of anime appearances as well.  lol

Another story has Mr. Lodge going into business (foreshadowing of EVIL MR. LODGE!!! ...?) with a Sanders look alike and Jughead eating a few pieces of chicken to discover the secret ingredient and promised never to tell.

Col. Sanders is pretty famous.  He has a lot of anime appearances as well.  lol

The Japanese see KFC and Colonel Sanders a bit differently than Americans do.  For starters, people reserve tables at their local KFC months in advance for Christmas Day meals.  And then there's the "Curse of the Colonel"...

Quite interesting, and yeah product references do occur. I have a comic where it's Burger Prince, not King :)

That's pretty ludicrous they invented their own "Curse of the Bambino" using Col. Sanders.  Pretty funny stuff.

I think this guy is a little arrogant though:

Quote
Although it exists, turkey isn’t common in Japan, and it certainly isn’t associated with Christmas. Colonel Saunders and his massive advertising campaigns have embedded “KFC = Christmas” into the minds of most naive Japanese. I say ‘naive’ because Christmas in Japan is purely commerical with no religious strings attached. Therefore everything the Japanese understand about Christmas has been fed to them through TV, radio and magazines, including commercials for chicken.

Christmas in the US is already purely commercial with no religious strings attached I think.  Christmas trees, Santa Claus, Christmas lights, etc. having nothing to do with religion.  lol
