The problem with digital is that it's not as appealing to read and the audience is much smaller since you need an ipad, iphone, or ipod touch.

Also with DRM, you risk losing what you buy if you damage or erase digital files.  Definitely not a great way to go.

Even though I love to do stuff digitally, I have to agree with you.  I hope Archie Comics doesn't convert everything to digital anytime soon!

I have so many Archies, I've lost count!  :D

If they did drop the print versions, I'd have to stop reading the newer books.  I can't afford the digital service!

I asked the subscription dept. and the final issue for Archie and Friends is 156 and Betty will be 193. Both will be out this summer.

Well, it seems like Veronica has officially eclipsed Betty.  Strange because I would've thought she would have been more popular, at least due to the reaction from fans I've seen elsewhere in the past.  Can't really said I read this comic, but I have read re-printed stories elsewhere a lot.  I think some changes for Betty in recent times have made her slightly less interesting than she may have been in the past.  Maybe I'm a bit off here since I didn't have an actual subscription, but I've seen too many stories about her doing community service.  That's fine to read once in a while, and I can see why that may be positive, but after a while it can be a bit off putting and make her seem like a real "do-gooder."  Obviously, I'm not the "core demo" here, but I think Veronica is a bit more relatable even if she is rich and can be greedy, arrogant, etc.  Not that I still don't love Betty as a character, but I'm just being honest here.

I agree, I mean, if you just did a Veronica or Betty story where it's just them without the usual gang...I'm going Veronica because she just has more range.

And I think it helps Veronica that she might have the best supporting family cast. I mean, her dad is one of the better adult characters, she has her mom around, Smithers, and you have the other servants plus more you could invent.

Betty...Her mom and dad are probably the least interesting out the main gang.

Betty is traditionally the most popular character in the sense that she's the one young female readers identify with. But she's become such a goody-two-shoes that it's hard for her to be funny. (This has been ongoing for decades. She was less crazy in the '60s than in the '50s, nicer in the '70s than in the '60s, even nicer in the '80s, etc.) The Kevin Keller story was one they couldn't have done with Betty because it requires a main character who can be self-absorbed and deluded.

I don't know if Veronica has eclipsed Betty but I'm not surprised her title sells better than Betty's. Ronnie just has more opportunities to do eye-catching funny stories.

Well, it seems the people running Archie think so.  I mean the whole "Will You Marry Me" thing seemed to tilt in the favor of Veronica fans pretty handedly.  Not that I wouldn't say they wouldn't do something like that to go against expectations, but I'm sure what they thought their readership would like factored heavily into it.  I would also wager it has to do with changing times.  Veronica is a very glamorous charcter.  Someone like her may appeal more to the younger female set than Miss "I make all my own clothes," and, "We need to do a fund raiser to save the library!"  Not that I would want Betty to be equally glamorous.  Her more humble nature is kind of needed as a foil to Veronica's over the top antics.

Maybe they need to send her back to the days when she was scheming to break up Archie and Veronica or even trying to kill Archie. Though I don't know if anyone would accept that. She hasn't been a female Reggie since the '50s at least.

As far as how modern audiences would react to the Betty from the '50s and '60s:

Remember, modern audiences don't read the floppies, for the most part.  They read the digests...the digests that often contain stories from the '50s and '60s.

That's how WE know how great and interesting and funny and dynamic Betty used to be -- they're still reprinting those stories!  There's no reason the Betty character in 2011 can't embrace the same traits as 1960s Betty.

Not all is lost.  They are probably doing this to make room for the new VERONICA & BETTY magazine which is equal to two regular sized comics.

What little I have read about what that title does nothing for me, so cancelling Betty to help make room for it would definietly be a loss for me.

I just spoke with Mr. Goldwater on the phone. He was very polite. I expressed my disappointment in the cancellation of "Betty". He called it part of an "overall revamping" of the line.

I have a terrible feeling that the "revamping" will lead to certain titles, like Betty, only being available digitally.  I have zero interest in digital comics and if they go this way, I may just stop buying Archie comics full stop as my own little protest.

Agreed.

I love it when Betty would retaliate (nothing vicious like that, maybe throw a snowball when her hat is made fun of), let her act a little more crazy, I mean, I always liked it when she'd have those looney tune moments.

Hmmm, while I do agree that the goody-two-shoes aspect of Betty that Archie Comics is currently pushing (and has been for quite a while now) does make the character less relatable to a modern audience, I think the old, scheming, murderous Betty would be equally unrelatable (seriously, the only kids that would relate to that are the ones that you eventually hear about on the news).

I think the best personality for Betty to have is a regular, typical teenaged girl that you'd find hanging out at the mall today. Personable enough but not overly nice. Not concerned with every bit of charity work that she can come across - just..."Oh, wow, yeah, that's bad. Poor them. Maybe I'll donate some spare change."

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

From the strips I've read, 40's Betty was a nice girl, but a complete doormat for Archie, while desperately trying to get his attention away from Veronica.  The comedy was in his apathy and her devotion anyway.  Cruel, but funny.

I agree with other comments that Veronica's more glamorous and has probably more story potential, I seem to recall that her title was one of Archie's worst-selling up to a couple of years ago.  Perhaps some of the guest stars have really helped, in which case Betty should gotten the same treatment.

I think the Kevin Keller introduction in the Veronica title probably helped the title spike up, as well as the Obama appearance.  I do wonder what might have happened if they chose to introduce them in the Betty comic...would it have had the same impact if say Betty had the crush on the unattainable Kevin, instead of Veronica?
