Location of Riverdale
« on: June 14, 2006, 09:13:22 PM »
I just read this in Wikipedia's Archie Comics article:

"For the comics' sixty year anniversary in 2002, several geographical and historical hints to the location of Riverdale were printed in every issue. At the end of the year, it was revealed that the hints point to Riverdale being located in the "Missouri area," but that officially Riverdale has no location; rather, it is essentially located wherever the reader wants it to be."

I've noticed that sometimes Archie & the gang go to the beach that seems to be almost walking distance from their houses. Maybe Riverdale is on one of the Great Lakes, but Ive never been there and dont know if they have beaches there.

For whatever reason, Betty's Wiki article claims her hometown as Riverdale, CA:

Cool.

I just updated Cheryl's Wiki article to change her hometown from Pembrooke to Riverdale, since she's living there now.

Yesterday, I added some info to Betty's Wiki article from my FAQ.

Cheryl's wiki may need updating again. A story in a recent comic book (don't remember which one) has her leaving the US entirely after her father decides to relocate his company headquarters to Europe... Should be interesting to see where they go with this idea.

Was this a new story or a reprint in a digest?

Because they shipped her off to Paris a few years ago when they cancelled her title - only to bring her back due to protests from her fans.

100% true about the 2002 digests.

I have several digests from that time period, and at first, they gave out clues as to where Riverdale was, and then they gave clues as to where Riverdale wasn't.

The clues MOSTLY pointed to Missouri, but one clue was falsely printed.  In one of the books, they printed that the place in question had SEVEN letters, while Missouri clearly has eight.

But, here's what we do know about Riverdale.

-it clearly has all 4 seasons
-it's along a shoreline like an ocean or lake (otherwise there would be no beach)

I don't remember actually... I'll have to dig up that comic again.

That's a terrible map of the US in that panel. However...

Comparing it to a real US map, I'd say Riverdale is located in either Maryland or Virginia. It's definitly too far north to be North Carolina and too far west to be New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, or Delaware.

I'm going to go with northern Virginia.

I think it's in Massachusetts.

For several reasons:

First, the original creator based Riverdale on Haverhill, Mass.

(The info is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverdale_%28Archie_Comics%29 )

Secondly, Veronica originally came from Boston, Mass. in the earliest Archie stories.

And last of all, a map appeared on TV at some rich old couple's home and it showed Riverdale as a star on what looked like the state of Massachusetts. (The story took place where the Archies band were marooned on the raft which floated out to the sea; it was by Bob Bolling, who drew such glorious maps, FYI.)

So yes, it's most likely to be in Massachusetts.:)

(I once went to Cape May with my friend, which is in New Jersey, and it does have some nice beaches.^_^)

Needless to say, Riverdale is still a fairy-tale land where the inhabitants never age or even die, aliens visit regularly, and little magicial gnomes suddenly appear out of thin air to grant you any wishes you want!

Secondly, Veronica originally came from Boston, Mass. in the earliest Archie stories.

However, in Archie #1 (her second introduction), Veronica was described as a "Boston subdeb" but was then, inexplicably, shown to be living in New York City - IN THE SAME STORY.

In B&V Digest #182, there's a reprinted, 2-part story called "My New Best Friend". After breaking up with Betty, Veronica tries out new best friends. When with Ginger, the following dialogue is exchanged:

Ginger: "Oh, Ron, I have to drop off some fashion designs in the city today!! If you want, you can come join me!"

Veronica: "Oh, that's okay! Some other time, Ginger! (after Ginger leaves) I'd better scratch her off my list! She already has a best friend! And that best friend is New York City! I can't compete with that!"

So there we go. Riverdale is so close to New York City that teenagers can "drop off" stuff there, and they refer to it merely as "the city".

My guess is Riverdale is a suburb of New York City.

Maybe something like this:

I give it two months before Riverdale is a suburb of Los Angeles or of the Carolina coast. Maybe Riverdale is a magical city that just appears where ever it needs to be for the sake of the story. Maybe that's why the kids haven't aged or graduated high school in 65+ years.  ;D ;D
