Is Stan Goldberg back in action?

I noticed Stan's name as the artist on a couple of comics in the September 2012 solicitations. And unless they're starting to do reprint stories in the Jughead floppy, well...

Is he back?

i just checked his website and his facebook page and nothing mentioned there.  if he is coming back, it was poorly publicised.

They've been doing "retro" covers for some time now - one of the Double Digests coming out in September has a DeCarlo cover on it. I'm guessing that's what it is. However, he was drawing Archie as part of his autograph at the local comic convention last year (and sitting at a table with an Archie banner behind it next to Craig Boldman), so it's really anyone's guess at this point.

Maybe it's just backlog stuff from shortly before they let him go.  Seems to take a very long time for stories to be used from the point they're drawn.  Although, in this case, it would seem be longer than six months ago.

It might be backlog. I notice that one of the stories mentioned Jon D'Agostino as the inker, and he's been dead for over a year.

I fear that newly-commissioned stories are getting rarer and rarer, especially in the lower-selling titles like Jughead - which is a shame because Boldman and Lindsey's work on that title was probably the best "traditional" Archie work around. That's why, while it's fun to see the old DeCarlo covers on the digests, it's also a little sad because every reprint means less original work that the company has to, you know, pay for.

From what I read, Stan suddenly stopped receiving assignments from Archie. When he inquired about this, they gave him a few stories or pages to complete, then reduced it to nothing. He's since worked with Bongo and did a variant cover for Marvel on FF#1.

Wow, I really had no idea about this. I saw that he and George Gladir were working on Three Stooges stuff at Paper Cutz, but it didn't occur to me that he might not be getting work at Archie. Have we heard the same story from other creators, or is this situation specific to Stan?

There is some speculation that his artwork has declined over the years, and that's possibly why he was suddenly let go. See http://mightygodking.com/index.php/2009/08/20/a-thousand-fleshy-tinmen-hold-sway/ for an example.

Gladir seems to be everywhere these days. He did do a lot of work with Goldberg though so that could be why he's not doing as much Archie stuff (though Gladir is a writer and not an artist).

Thanks for the info, folks!

I can understand Archie wanting to freshen up the look of their current books with new artists, and I can see that this effort would result in some long-time creators losing out on work, but at the same time it is incredibly sad to think that Stan Goldberg isn't working for Archie.

Oldiesmann, that blog post is super harsh. I don't know a thing about that blogger. Were they aware of Goldberg's age at the time that he drew Archie Marries? They seem to have a good grasp of his past work and significance, I would think that they would think twice before belittling the work of someone not just of Goldberg's age, but of his status and continued relevance.

I don't think that this person was breaking any new ground. I don't think that the decline of Goldberg's work is an elephant in the room or anything. I think that those who are close enough to Archie comics to know the name Stan Goldberg know that he is quite old and still working hard at something that he's passionate about. Maybe I'm taking it too personally, but it really bothered me to read that.

I think the controversy was over the fact they couldn't be more up front with a guy that broke his back for Archie Comics for a million years.  That's my take on it.  His last comments about it were definitely negative regarding the situation.

The blog was certainly harsh, but the poster did note early-on that Goldberg used to be very good, and was responsible for a lot of great stuff. He's just pointing out that Goldberg's work NOW stinks. However, I'm with Biollante that the company owed the man more than "hmmm... Stan's stuff sucks now- let's just not give him any work and hope he gets the idea, okay?" The dude basically got retirement shoved onto him, and comic book artists aren't famous for having large retirement plans if they're not expecting it.

The review comes across as mean... but reviews often are. I mean, I'd feel bad for Stan if he read that and was hurt, but people just kinda should say what they mean at times, y'know? In my younger days, I'd have been as mean, but now I'd probably sugar-coat it if it was my stuff. But still, call a spade a spade- that art was just ugly.
