The Gang At Their High School Reunion

There was a topic here previously about where we saw the gang in the future.

This story was posted and we kind of discussed things from there

Do you think Betty was right? Where do you see or where would you like to see the gang in ten years when they're twenty-eight?

I, for one, think Betty was being petty here with Veronica. She lost Archie and her fortune? I think she'd be spending her time trying to her wealth back, not that there is anything wrong with owning and operating a dress shop. I just see young Veronica being more ambitious than that.

I agree with Betty on Moose and Midge though.

I was going to say that Betty probably just feels that Veronica would be happier without so much money because Betty thinks money doesn't bring happiness, she sees how its affected Veronica badly sometimes, it's too much trouble...then I saw that Betty says "Poor Ronnie!" and I realized, no, she is being petty.  ;D  I guess even Betty has her moments. I don't know what I would predict for them, the things that would probably make them happiest sound the most boring. Betty might be a writer, and maybe Jughead would find a way to solve world hunger or invent the perfect burger, one or the other. The only one I would bank on is that Ronnie would rise to the occasion when she inherits Lodge Industries and make it a success, and if her fortunes dwindled to a dress shop then yeah I think she'd probably be looking for ways to expand it into an empire.

DeCarlo Rules

Veronica's role is pretty much par for the course whenever Betty writes her little fictional fantasies. If it's a fairy tale, who always gets cast as the evil Queen? If it's another path through the Yellow Wood branching off the end of Memory Lane, then it's "poor Veronica, she didn't do so well". Deep down, Betty believes that "Instant karma's gonna get you, gonna knock you right in the head", so those with a sense of entitlement like Veronica and Reggie get brought low to teach them humility. On the other hand, if some twist of fate were to reduce Veronica to working for a living, there's no real evidence that she could make a fortune starting from scratch. We're not even entirely sure that Hiram Lodge didn't start out with certain benefits and advantages to get the snowball of his vast fortune rolling.

There are certain notable parallels here to the later Archie Loves Betty: The Married Life. Archie and Betty are married with three children, and Betty's a schoolteacher (but not at Riverdale High). Jughead owns a restaurant chain. Moose is well off (a little more so than he was as Mayor of Riverdale) and a respected pillar of the community.

Thrillho

Even though Veronica can be irresponsible with money she has shown good business acumen. If she lost her fortune (though I don't see that happening) I could see her attach herself to Jughead and handle the business side of his burger chain. I can see Jughead being content to just take over Pop's but I can see Veronica pushing him to dream bigger.

Despite the "Crash of 2020" bit I think this story is originally from the '80s. On that note, I don't really see Betty and Archie having three kids by twenty-eight. I like Betty as a writer and as a teacher so I think she could do both. I would like to see her as a successful novelist and English/Creative Writing teacher.

Since Reggie's dad is a newspaper man, I want to see him become a writer as well, maybe an investigative journalist, or a sitcom writer since we've seen him do stand up.

Yeah most stories that go there say he did.

The idea Bob Montana started out with was that the Lodges were "Bostom Brahmins" and most writers keep on with the old money idea. The way I like to see it, Mr. Lodge was probably spoiled and irresponsible like Veronica when he was her age. They hint it in this story:

But he overcame it just like she will.  :)  And yeah, no evidence Veronica could rebuild a fortune like that since a lot depends on luck but I think she would TRY and under all her problems she has a lot of will and brains.

I agree. Even if Veronica matured and became less materialistic, she's still accustomed to a certain lifestyle and there's no way you could take it away from her without her kicking and screaming.

While I do prefer old money Lodges, some modern stories have Hiram working his way up from nothing. Then there was this gag I really liked from one story where Archie asked Mr. Lodge where he got all his money, and Veronica chimes in to say he married her mom who had $40 million.

Understand that I don't say Veronica couldn't take care of herself if left on her own without her inheritance. She has just enough business savvy and self-confidence to make a good and comfortable living, and would use her personal charisma to open doors for herself. She just doesn't have the kind of drive and empire building skills that her father has to amass fortunes.

That reminds me of the awesome AWM episode where Hiram reverts back to his teenage self and challenges Weatherbee to drag race to the death around Dead Man's Curve just for the hell of it! Thanks, I forgot to post this yesterday!

Yeah I don't think he was always an empire building genius, maybe the Lodges are late bloomers. Anyway a spoiled undisciplined girl becoming a master businesswoman makes a more dynamic story arc than if she just kept racking up credit card debt her whole life so even for that alone I'd believe in her.

Story title?? I don't think I read that and it sounds excellent.

😬 I don't know, sorry. Someone might have posted it on the old site or I read it in a digest.

I agree.  ;D Though a Riverdale-esque storyline where she loses everything but continues to spend, spend, spend driving her to commit heinous acts in order to repay her creditors might work too.
