Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats...as White?
« on: February 29, 2012, 06:51:54 PM »
Has anyone noticed that in the reprint of the Josie story "Purely Primitive," the character of Valarie is inked as a white woman? This is from the '91 Archie Andrews...Where Are You Digest #75. Val is drawn with a different hairstyle and Josie calls her by name. Melody, Josie, and Allen all look the same.

I am going to post a pic of Josie and Valerie from the story.

Is this a mistake or did Val get a character re-vamp at some point? Not sure about the original appearance of the story.

Initially, I was thinking that they had turned Valerie into Pepper...but the lack of glasses tells me no.

But, the fact that they called her 'Valerie' tells me that it was more than likely an error in colouring.

Wasn't there another coloring error that happened to Chuck?

I've seen that happen in the occasional panel (a colourist's oversight), and it was more common in the old days. That haircut doesn't look like Val's, though- was it from the "Pussycats" era? Because that was when Val was introduced- they may have just made some random other character named Valerie to be an "extra friend" or something, as a one-shot character. I haven't read the story, though- is it clearly the Pussycat Valerie aside from the colouring?

I once read a pussycat story where there was no black girl, so Valerie must have been white in it.
Archie: Betty, our Betty! Dear, sweet Betty!
Jughead: Blonde girl, cute smile, about so high...dates some guy named Mantle, right?

I think it was either an extra character or a colorist error. Maybe it was the pre-Val Val. Josie calls her by name, and the trio is Josie, Val, and Mel. It is a story about the men fighting...not a musical story...so it is hard to say! I was wondering if anyone else knew more!

It can't be pre-Val, as it looks like the artist is Stan Goldberg.  It was Dan Decarlo who created Josie and her world.

I have so many Archies, I've lost count!  :D
