I know that Dan and Dan Jr did decades of amazing art of Archie, and James did too. But how can I tell their art apart? It was usually signed "Dan Decarlo" so I have no idea if it was drawn by Sr or Jr. I am guessing they all were very similar, but I'm sure there were some subtle differences? Perhaps there was a period where Dan Jr. and James just took over the work entirely? Can someone please post some example panels of each man's art style, and their contribution to comic art?

I probably have some examples of artwork, but I notice that Dan and James DeCarlo were most prominent in the late eighties.  If you grab any random Betty and Veronica comic published between 1988 and 1990, more than likely, you have some art that was done by the younger DeCarlo brood.  After 1990, most of the cover art was then done by I'm assuming DeCarlo Sr. and Alison Flood.

Again...another assumption here, but I figure that if both Dan and James' names appear on the cover, it'd be from the younger DeCarlo team.  If it is just Dan's name, then it's by DeCarlo Sr.

And, I have a hell of a time trying to distinguish between the two myself!

Archie has been known to say that Dan Jr. and James were more cartoony

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows how dan jr. and james decarlo died? i read in an article that dan decarlo was predeceased by his sons and i have been searching the internet for info but have not been able to come up with anything. Dan decarlo was my favorite archie artist.

I don't know exactly.  But, both of them must have been extremely young, as their year of birth is listed as 1948.

Another name to throw into the mix is Jeff shultz. I have a very hard time telling him apart fromthe deCarlo boys and Dan, sr. in his later years.

Jeff Schultz is very, very close to the DeCarlo style but I can spot his artwork quite easily. The girls' proportions are less 'hourglass-like' and sometimes the facial details aren't quite in the same proportion as Dan did. Usually what makes Schultz art stand out is when it's been inked by Al Milgrom. Al's inking style is quite different to the DeCarlo style. I can't really explain why... I am not an artist... but it's strikingly different to me.
