I've got a few stories by Dick Malmgren, but haven't got them scanned yet.  But, I have noticed that EVERY digest from 1985 has an opening story by Dick Malmgren, and all the panels were oversized, meaning that standard 6-page stories would span 9 or 10 pages, with 3-4 panels per page.

Did Malmgren both write and draw the stories shown here?  Did he always, or usually, draw his own stories?
(BTW I like these too.)

I kind of hate his stories. He has a tendency to write everyone like a jerk for comedic effect and it's off-putting.

The line between being a "jerk" and "edgy" is a fine line indeed!  Smiley

I hear what you are saying though.  (or is that "read what you are posting"?)

One of the reasons I'm not the world's biggest Garfield fan is that it comes across this way.

Here's an example of one of his stories and why it rubs me the wrong way:

Coach Kleats calls Archie to the gym and Archie blatantly ignores him and then brushes him off. Dilton asks why and Archie says something like, "I don't feel like going to gym class. He can't make me do anything I don't want to do. I'll go when I'm ready." The running gag is Archie keeps performing strenuous acts to stay hidden and avoid Coach Kleats so he doesn't have to exercise.

Not only is this completely out-of-character for Archie, there's no explanation for why he wants to avoid gym so badly other than "I don't want to." And he's so rude about the way he disregards Coach Kleats to his face. Now, I'm not the "obey authority no matter what" type by any means, but this was just so... unlikeable, and not at all sympathetic.

I know what you mean, I've felt that way about certain comics.  But for whatever reason that story you mentioned didn't bother me much, I found it pretty funny.  Now that you mention it I guess his stories do have a different comic sensibility, but it doesn't make me dislike them.

I can say one thing about these stories, though I don't suppose it's Malmgren's fault: the coloring is really bizarre.  Just look at Archie's plum-purple bell-bottoms in both the stories posted above.  Usually in his stories the characters run around in garish ensembles of bright purple, lime-green, fuchsia and yellow.  Of course after a while you learn to sort of ignore the coloring when you read these stories, but when you pay attention it's pretty ludicrous!

That first story is hilarious. I love the "bald Grundy" gag Cheesy

I'm pretty sure that, at least where the green border color is concerned, that it was added recently, and wasn't likely to have originally been that color. As far as the color goes in general, Archie comics tends to have a very... strange, and diverse palette. ^_^
