...Whatever the so-called improvements made are, in regards to the use of colors and such in comic books like Archie, I much prefer the look of the covers from the 60's.  Even when you look at all the little pictures of Archie comics auctions on Ebay, or go to comics.org to see more Archie covers, the old ones stand out and are much more vibrant.

My only complaint about some new issues, is that instead of featuring some joke for the potential buyers amusement, it shows a picture of the story it is going to feature like the "Pals N Gals "  with Archie and the gang bowling, or the one with them stacking cups, or the one with Archie looking through binoculars at B&V. What happens to the  cover jokes, WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM??? buck2

I totally agree. You just have to look at the covers to Pep 116-145, Betty & Veronica 40-50, and others from that era to see how great that era's covers were. And it's no coincidence that most of them were by Harry Lucey.

I'm a pretty big fan of the different era's of Archie covers.  The Life with Archie series has some particularly stunning covers.

But Smiley

I also happen to think that some covers from today are tomorrows classics.  Smiley  Needless to say - I have my favourites and a couple of note for me are the Halloween covers this year and last with Betty and Veronica.

So many of the old covers you see here on Gallery are just plain stunning and full of so much life and fun, too. Just look at little characters dancing and running around the whole image!

Now those current covers are just...simple foreshadowing of what will happen in a story inside. Meh.:/

Well.... now I'm just going to have to pull some new covers.

What era classifies as "new" (how far back can I go?)

If you take the "best" of 50 years and compare it to the "best" of 2 years - then, yes.  Older covers are going to seem better.

Also - there's the nostalgia factor.

However, I still will play the cantankerous one and insist that today's work is really very, very good.

In one way, you're right;  Covers have added some very nice artistic touches, based on modern graphic technology.  But, I still think those 60's covers just jump right out at you.  It's not just what was drawn or what colors were used to color the illustrations in.  It's that the whole thing had a more vibrant look.  As I mentioned, when I view alot of Archie comics thumnails on, say Ebay or comics.org, it's those 60's covers that look more classic to me.  I guess some of it is the materials used, then vs now.

...take a peek at Archie's Christmas Stocking #6 on Ebay.  Now that cover looks much richer and vibrant than later (80's on) covers.  I'm not saying they're not good.  But even look at TV and old album covers vs new.  An old, 1960's Christmas album cover...featuring a star or stars of the day, looks much more vibrant than it's modern counterpart.  Same with old color movies or tv shows.  Compare Bonanza or Bewitched to , say, Law and Order.  The oldies are much richer looking.  I think there was more color saturation used in old days.  That's one reason for it, I think.

I agree! There are quite a few that Captain Hero has posted in his gallery that are just amazing and worth a second and third look (often times even more!) since they're jam packed with so many scenes and so much action!

It's also worth noting that older covers will catch our attention more because they are not ... well ... modern.

What I mean by this is - if you look at something like a 1940's comic - the cover really stands out.  Some of this can be attributed to the great artists of the time - absolutely!  However, some can also be attributed to the fact that they are reflections of the time which they were created and stand-out to us in comparison to todays graphics.

This is why an artist can draw a "retro" look.  It's "retro" for a reason.

I think that the covers of the 70's are starting to hit the level where folks are saying...wow! Check it out!  Look at the Marvel and DC books from 1971-1975 and they have a certain "feel" that is cool.  Look a the covers from the 1990's and they seem to have less appeal...so far.... wait 20 years.

The reason I am so "big" on current covers is that I think there is some work being done at Archie that is different than anything done before.  Obviously, I am a huge DeCarlo fan.  His work was amazing and defined many of the characters for many years.  If the average reader has more exposure to Montana and Lucey would they be more "present" in our thoughts?

I've had several folks comment on the covers when I buy Archie's today.  Quite positively.

I dunno... there's something about the newer artists that I just don't care for.. Holly G. in particular.. her characters always seemed to stare off in the distance and never at the object they were focusing on.. and if two characters were drawn walking abreast, their steps were always in tune...

I think that one of the most noticeable differences between older and newer covers is simply the characters. There are quite a few older covers where there's a scene, or just a bunch of miscellaneous characters floating around on the cover. There's sometimes even a sort of wallpaper effect (Captain Hero's got a great cover gallery with lots of older covers) and they're generally pretty busy, filled with both characters and detailed backgrounds. Newer covers look much simpler, usually keeping to just a few members of the gang, and sometimes feature very sparse backgrounds... or no background at all. The characters are usually a lot larger/closer to the reader, whereas, in older comic covers, you'd see the characters drawn in full, though tiny.

Older covers had your eyes bouncing all over the place to take in all the details, and newer covers are more slick and simplified.

A few older covers from Captain Hero's gallery. They all seemed like ads in a way. "Look at all characters, jokes, number of pages featured in this comic!"

"archiedigest20" "archiedigest31" "archiedigest32""archiedigest41" "classiclittlearchie3" "jugheadjones17"

While still interesting, the amount of characters, and advertising (which has made a return to the top right of the comics) is minimal. Covers aren't as busy, and there's more focus now on the main scene/panel. Most covers now tend to be a prequel of the first story.

A few newer covers from Captain Hero's gallery:
"b&vdoubledigest46" "jugheaddoubledigest133" "jugheaddoubledigest40" "jugheadwitharchie131" "storyandgame31" "whereareyou93"

I just don't like covers without any jokes. As of late they would involve a picture like Archie's holiday tales with Archie holding a snow globe with B&V or the comic with the cover having the band walking off stage with a little caption in the corner.

I don't tend to buy comics that show a prequel to the story, or a cover in mid climax. I look at the cover and lose interest. I don't usually judge a book by it's cover, but there are times when ya got to.

I enjoy the Jughead cover with the shirt. No word bubbles but still funny. Using subtle jokes can make the comic seem more interesting than comics with a blank preface.
I don't really enjoy the comics with images scattered over the cover, but those covers rate higher in my books than the ones that show an image and you have to read the book to find the covers punchline. Tongue
