Archie and Friends First Appearances List Help
« on: June 10, 2010, 12:09:18 AM »
Hi all. I kinda of pilfered Gregg's list of characters he made in another topic, but
tried to fill out all the first appearances that I knew of and wanted to ask all the fans
on the board if they could help me fill in the blanks on the rest and verify what I've got so far.

Also I tend to ask questions as I'm writing this list of some chronology of other books and or character changes I was wondering about as well.

Archie Andrews (Pep #22)
Fred Andrews (Pep #22)
Mary Andrews (Pep #22)
Betty Cooper (Pep #22)

"The original concept of "Betty's Diary" began in the pages of Archie's JokeBook with the hopelessly lovesick Betty relating rather exaggerated, and humorous tales of her exploits with Archie in her diary"

Anybody know exactly what issue of Archie's Joke Book Betty's Diary begins in?

If memory serves me, Wendy Weatherbee's first appearance was in Tales From Riverdale Digest #10.

And, Jellybean was born in Jughead #50 (1993).

Also if anyone wishes to make corrections to this list please do so.

I'm very confused right now regarding Josie's 1st appearance. I have a Best of Josie TPB I picked up where it states that She's Josie #1 is the first app. of Josie, Melody, Alex, Pepper and Albert.

However both Comic Vine and Wikipedia seem to think Josie first appears in Archie Pals N Gals #23 (which I don't have).

Can anyone confirm or disprove either of these one way or the other?

There's a Mrs Grundy in Jackpot #4 looking very much like the Miss Grundy of Pep #30 (and she's a 'Mrs' again in Pep #37)

Pep 22 is also the first appearance of Betty's parents and one of the Grandfather Andrews (a Grandma Andrews shows up in Pep #38)

Yes I'm almost done with the 1960s and am preparing for the 1970s, so things
like the Archie Show, Archie's Funhouse, Josie and The Pussy Cats and Sabrina are all on my current pre-production slate, so to speak.

I just want to make sure my info is accurate, b/c the wikipedia has been lacking or just lacking in verification. I don't mind buying more Archie comics to further my projects and education (already spent money on the DVD sets anyway), I just want to know which issues I need to get, or hopefully which reprints (for the older harder to find issues).

As I stated elsewhere, the R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. stuff was in issues 48 through 60 of Life With Archie. I have many of these but don't have all of them yet (I currently have 51, 55-58 and 60).

You're welcome :)

For the superhero stuff, check out The Secret Origins of Archie as Captain Pureheart. A nice 5-part series of articles on everyone's favorite red-headed superhero :)

Also, after re-reading that blog, it appears that the R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. stuff started with LWA #49, not issue 48 as I stated above.

I don't have complete details on all the issues that the superhero stories appeared in as those stories were spread out across numerous titles and not confined to a single title like the R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. stories were.

I also have several of the superhero issues though - various issues of Life With Archie, the "Superhero Special", Little Archie #40 (featuring "Little Pureheart") and a few issues each of the individual titles featuring Pureheart and Captain Hero.
