Ginger/Cheryl: The mess
« on: May 31, 2008, 08:02:28 PM »
In B&V Spectaular  # 50, Giger Lopez made her debut when Cheryl left for Europe.  In the same year in the digests, Archie Comics ruined scenes with Cheryl by dying her hair brown and calling her Ginger.  What was that all about?

They didn't have to do that, since the newer stories wouldn't be in the digests for a few years.

I have no idea why they did what they did.  I missed that issue, so all of a sudden, I see Ginger Lopez brought into the fold, and suddenly she replaced Cheryl in all the stories!  I think they went too far when in a couple of stories, they either changed Jason into "Ginger"'s personal assistant or they just edited him out altogether, leaving some rather odd instances in which "Ginger" has her arm around an invisible person!

It wasn't one of Archie comics finest moments...

I remember in a recent digest they reprinted a story like that, and it was obvious that it was Cheryl, Ginger looked like Cheryl and called Betty and Veronica townies....

How recent?

I hope this isn't still going on.

Anyway, could someone please post scans of the original Cheryl stories and the Gingerized versions, so we can have some side-by-side comparisons?

It was pretty recent, but I'm guessing they're not STILL doing it but they just reprinted it in that version, like as in it was tampered with before they reprinted it, I mean it wouldn't be going on today since Archie does acknowledge both characters now...

Why'd they do THAT?! >:(

If they want to feature MORE of that Ginger girl, JUST create NEW stories about her. Duh.

Leave Dan DeCarlo's classical Cheryl Blossom stories alone, for crying out loud! His name is being insulted that way. :P

Yeah, which Cheryl stories were Gingerized?

For some reason, I thought they were Holly's.

Actually, Mark and ACF27 are BOTH right.  The stories they changed around were mostly Dan Parent, but the ones that were changed around that were drawn by Holly G! were those Fashion Pin-Ups.

Sadly, this is done for the sake of saving a few bucks. It's much cheaper to have someone "Photoshop" an existing story, remove or alter certain characters and then change the word balloons a bit, to create a "new" story for a fraction of what an entirely new story(with new art and all)would cost. Like the digests, which are primarily a re-print venue, it's easy money for the publisher. Sad but true.

Yeah, but, since these Gingerized stories originally appeared in the digests, they were actually spending a bit more money to alter them than they would by simply reprinting them as they were originally drawn. I don't understand why they did that.

Yes. To cheapen the great comic art.

They aren't doing a favor even to younger readers, who should be raised to be lovers of comic art and animation.

And BTW, that WAS a Dan DeCarlo story they messed up, BTW! Look a bit closer, kids.

I too, don't understand why they did these! If they felt they didn't want any Cheryl appearances at that time why bother with the stories at all? theres plenty of other stuff to reprint! I heard the reason Cheryl disappeared the first time was a parental complaint about her super skimpy outfits! (yes one complaint)  If anything it had to make the kids wonder why Ginger was acting so mean!

I do understand (I don't agree with ) the policy of modernizing stories, so I can defend that, but Gingerizing old Cheryl stories is just plain dumb!

:)

Wow, overreact much? Wait, this is Archie Comics. Never mind.

If anything it had to make the kids wonder why Ginger was acting so mean!

Ginger can be annoying, too. I recently read a reprinted story called "This Girl's Everywhere", where Ginger keeps showing up wherever Betty and Veronica are, despite their best efforts to avoid her, in order to steal the guys. It turned out that she was bribing Jughead with food for information on their whereabouts, so Veronica set Jughead up at a restaurant with an unlimited expense account. Problem solved.
