  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

Social class in Riverdale .
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:34:16 AM »
Okay , what is the division between well-off , and not so well-off , parts of Riverdale ?
  Jughead , Betty , and of course , our hero(?) :2funny: , Archie , live in a solidly middle-class neighborhood .
While Mr. Lodge , of course , is in a category of his own , I believe the Mantles might be in a " richer " vicinity as well .
I've seen it suggested that Moose and Midge are in a TOUCH more " working-class " , say , nabe .
And Dilton ? Given that he has a stand-apart shack ( Maybe it's supposed to be the Doiley's garage , but even so...) for his labratory , isn't he in a slightly less zoning-board affected area than the juusstttt ever-so respectable part where Archie is ?
I think I've seen that Archie has done a map of Riverdale of sorts , on its site...I came up before comics publishers routinely put out maps/universe guides ( Yes ! We walked to school 30 miles , barefoot , in the snow...) , so...

I vaguely recall different stories where the Jones' and Masons might be lower middle class, but Mr. Jones usually ends up in some kind of supervisory/managerial position.

But you're right about the Mantles - definitely upper middle class.

Andrews, Cooper, Doileys, pretty much all others would probably fit into middle class.

A lot of people mistakenly think of Reggie as "rich," which he isn't. (I remember as a little kid being upset that "The New Archies" said his father had a limo. That's wrong.) As you say, he's below Veronica, but above Archie: his father owns the only newspaper in a small town, which used to be a pretty big status symbol, so he has more money and influence than the average kid without being in Veronica's social set.

Jughead's parents are whatever they need to be depending on the story, but there definitely are a bunch of stories where they're teetering on the brink of financial collapse, or Jughead's dad loses his job and Jughead needs to work to support them, etc. I think he usually comes off as being a little lower on the totem pole than others, which would explain why Veronica looks down on him more than even the other characters.

The only person that I've ever really seen as belonging to what is called "working-class" would be Sue Stringly, from the Little Archie stories, and even then, she only appeared in a few stories.

But, JimY does make a good point about Jughead's status.  In particular during the 1960's, Jughead was being written as having a beatnik type look, and in some one page Gag Bag type stories, you can clearly see holes in the drywall of Jughead's house!

The Coopers are all over the place, depending on the story.

In some stories (most, probably), Betty has her own car (even a hybrid!).

In others, the family has two or even just one car. I remember one story calling "The Rivalry", where Betty was comparing herself and Veronica. She said she had to rely on either the family stationwagon or her own skateboard for transportation.

Also, her wardrobe consisted mostly of "empty hangers and not-so-empty moths".

That is way poorer than my family. My mom and I both work in retail, and we still have three cars, and I have a decent amount of clothes.

So Betty's family must be just scraping by, at least in that story. Definitely working class.

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

I'd put Sue Stringly into the lower class (or just plain poor!).

Reggie lives a lavish life style. He usually drives a sports car and it was a lot easier for him to have a date with Veronica than Archie. I recall a story where Reggie decides to just spend money to make himself feel better.
