What keeps these two together? I've never been able to figure out what they see in each other or why Midge puts up with Moose's violent behavior. Any ideas?

It's never made much sense to me either.  In many stories she's seen complaining about his bad temper and leaving him, but always starts missing him and takes him back because of his underlying "sweetness".   Undecided

I think Midge is one of the most poorly developed characters.  I've never been able to work up much interest in her at all.

Moose's anger is what is referred to as "comic book" anger.

If you take a real close look at Reggie's face, you'll notice no permanent scarring, no brain damage, no signs of trauma.  Even in a short span of time!

That's because Moose's character using anger to express dynamic, comic outrage.

Midge is his emotional foil and is basically the "good" part of Moose.  So they actually are a single character in many respects.

I guess Midge puts up with Moose's violent behavior the same way he puts up to her major unfaithfulness. I mean, we always see Reggie and Archie getting yelled at (beat up) for dating Midge, but what the heck about her?! I mean she's the one who says yes to those guys. I never understand those comics where she tells Reggie how Moose is out of town and they should be careful when going out.

Moose and Midge=Dysfunctional relationship to the max!

You know, deep down inside, I think Midge really appreciates the fact that Moose is so fiercely protective of her, although Moose completely loses his mind even to her standards.  I think that in Midge's eyes, she knows that Moose will never let anybody hurt her, and I really think that she trusts him enough to know that he will always have her heart, and she his.

In the Archie comic books I grew up with, there really wasn't much of anything "good" about Moose's character.  He was the extreme stereotypical dumb jock.  And he had a violent temper.

Midge was the gorgeous "unattainable woman" - unattainable because her big ape of a boyfriend would beat up anyone who even looked at her.  But Midge, left to herself, was very attainable.  She would dump Moose, or conspire with Reggie to get him out of the way for awhile.  And she would make out with any cute guy (especially Reggie, but there were others) who came around as long as Moose wasn't nearby.  She obviously wasn't committed to Moose and even felt trapped and enslaved by him at times.

It was certainly hard to root for Moose and Midge as a couple!

Athena - That would make perfect sense. It always seemed like much of the focus was (and still is) on Moose and Midge was just a non-character. I really hope they flesh her out a bit more with the new story. She can be a bit irritatingly bland at times.

Captain Hero - VERY introspective! I think that some women are flattered by jealousy in their partners. There was even an older movie, "If A Man Answers" with Sandra Dee that's entire premise was based on the idea of "training your man" (like a dog) by, in large part, using jealousy.

Bluto - That's really as in-depth as the characters were ever really shown. Rather... two dimensional with Midge's actions only serving as a way to get reactions from Moose.

There was an older story (1950's?) where Big Moose took up bird watching and was so obsessed with his new hobby that he no longer beat up other guys for talking to Midge.  Midge feels extremely slighted by this and tries to get Moose back to his old jealous self by flirting with other boys right in front of him.

AyaBlue,

You're right.  Midge and Moose are types and plot devices for jokes as the big guy explodes and Reggie, or whoever, gets chased or pummelled.  Midge and Moose weren't really fully developed characters in those old stories.

A somewhat related story that appeared in a digest a while back...

Midge is softening Moose's image - "peace, love, harmony", etc. This annoys everyone else because it's ruining Moose's wrestling skills - even Jughead manages to pin him (and Betty comments that even she could pin Jughead). The gang tries everything they can think of to get Moose's attitude back - even to the point of Archie kissing Midge. However, nothing works, until Archie remembers an old quote from Rudyard Kipling saying that the female is more deadly than the male. Archie talks Veronica into kissing Moose as she has a reputation for wrapping guys around her little finger...

As soon as Midge sees this, she gets really ticked and creams Veronica. When Moose asks her "What about peace and love", etc., her reply is "Oh shut up!".

I think Midge likes Reggie better (why else would she be WILLING to go out with him behind Moose's back?), but stays with Moose probably because she thinks she keeps him pacified or something. Ironically, SHE'S the reason why Moose is so sadistic with boys! Roll Eyes But she's very lucky she doesn't live in RL - or else Moose would take out his anger on HER if she ever talks to another boy! Undecided

I, too am turned off by Moose's cruelty and Neanderthal behavior sometimes, BTW. But ironically, he has also been shown to be as innocent and clueless as a little toddler, though. And I also think the REAL reason Moose gets to be in high school instead of kindergarten (where he SHOULD have belonged) is because he's such a GREAT linebacker, period. idiot2

Thanks for recalling that story, Oldiesmann.  I thought I remembered a story where Midge beat up Veronica out of jealousy for Moose, but I wasn't certain.  That was a creative twist in the writing!

Midge was just a non-character. I really hope they flesh her out a bit more with the new story. She can be a bit irritatingly bland at times.

The only really meaty thing that I've ever read/heard about Midge (not counting the parental divorce, which I never actually read; scans, anyone?) is that she wants to be a stuntwoman.

As for fleshing her out in the "new" story, don't count on it, Aya. In the novel, she basically just hates Moose but really misses him, but no explanation is ever given why. Also, Betty has a bug up her butt for no real reason about getting Midge and Moose back together, saying they belong together and are right for each other and so on. Again, none of this is ever explained. It seems Mike Pellowski couldn't come up with any concrete reasons for Midge and Moose to be together, so he avoided giving any and just had Betty be all "We gotta get them back together!"

The only thing I have to add to Moose & Midge staying together is: sometimes there is no obvious reason for why a couple stays together! If we question them, we also have to question why Betty and/or Veronica puts up with Archie and his two (or more) timin' ways...
