According to Wikipedia, the first appearance of Mr Weatherbee was in Pep 27. That's dated May 1942. Now Jackpot 5 (Spring 1942) also has a story with Mr Weatherbee in it. I know the indicia date is later than release, so the May Pep would have been released in February or March? On the same basis, I'd have expected a Spring title to be released in March? Does anyone know how the Quarterly Jackpot issues fit with the monthly Pep, please?

I've seen a pencil arrival date on Jackpot #5 of March 7th, I haven't seen an arrival date for Pep #27 but from other Peps of the time (that I have seen arrival dates on) I know it was on sale consistantly in the third or fourth week of the month.

the Overstreet PG list it correctly as Jackpot #5!

Makes Jackpot # 5 Archies 7th appearance, Pep #27 Archies 8th appearance.

In case you care the rest of Archies first ten go

#1 - Pep #22
#2 - Pep #23
#3 - Jackpot #4
#4 - Pep #24
#5 - Pep #25
#6 - Pep #26

#9 - Pep #28
#10 - Pep #29

Thanks, Forsythe. Another reason to be wary of Wikipedia. Most of my collection is in storage at the moment (long story), so I couldn't check Overstreet.

Would I be right in saying:
Jackpot 6: between Pep 29 and 30
Jackpot 7: between Pep 32 and 33
Jackpot 8: between Pep 35 and 36
Jackpot 9: after Pep 39 and before Archie 2 / Pep 40?

Archie 1 between Pep 34 and 35
Archie 2 between Jackpot 9 and Pep 40?

Jackpot's publsihing schedule seems to become quite erratic towards the end.

Thanks, Forsythe. There's a proper history of the Archie characters just waiting to be written sometime.

It will be a glorious day indeed when Pep #22 hangs on my wall.

Forsythe, I was having a second look at your list above, which places Archie #1 after Pep #35.

Archie #1 has a December '42 date and Pep #35 has a January '43 date, does that mean that Archie #1 was released late?

Jackpot #7, which you place before Pep #34, advertises Archie as appearing in his own magazine "now", so it would seem strange to have two issues of Pep before Archie #1.

Archie Comics, like Jackpot was a quarterly at its inception, so Archie #1 was actually the Winter issue, not December 1942.

Heres the list with the arrival dates I have. At that time (and for many years after) retailers would write the date they got the book in on the cover so they would know how long the book had been on sale when they went to go pull returns. These dates came from many sources the primary ones being my copy, the copy pictured in the gerber photo journal, or copies I witnessed for sale on ebay.

Oct 27  #1 - Pep #22
Nov 22 #2 - Pep #23
Dec 17 #3 - Jackpot #4
Dec 17 #4 - Pep #24
Jan 21  #5 - Pep #25
          # 6 - Pep #26
Mar 7   #7 - Jackpot #5
           #8 - Pep #27
Apr 22 #9 - Pep #28
          #10 - Pep #29
          #11 - Pep #30
Jul 10 #12 - Jackpot #6
Jul 15 #13 - Pep #31
Aug 19 #14 - Pep #32
Sep 18 #15 - Pep #33
Oct 21  #16 - Jackpot #7
Oct 21  #17 - Pep #34
            #18 - Pep #35
Nov 20  #19 - Archie #1
            #20 - Jackpot #8
            #21 - Pep #36
            #22 - Pep #37

Thank you. I'd forgotten that Archie was a quarterly to begin with. I'm also used to thinking of Winter as early December rather than late December.
