  • DeCarlo Rules: @archie 45 - WOA56 is an Annual. As such, they put some special sections in there that don't necessarily appear in WOA on a regular basis, so I wouldn't get my hopes up. The funny thing is that LWA stories tend to appear in all 3 of the Archie digests with a fair amount of frequency, and have never been partitioned by their own title page before. That was one one of the oldest LWA stories in WOA56, so it probably functions almost as a Vault section.

Reggie Marries Betty
« on: February 27, 2010, 05:32:08 PM »
This is Part 1 of a 3 part story!

“Ohhh I just can’t wait until college!” Veronica Lodge babbled excitedly to her best friend, Betty Cooper as the two sat together in a booth at Pop’s. It was the day after graduation and the entire senior class had invaded Pop’s to celebrate together a final time before they started either getting ready for college or working.

Betty sighed and looked at Ronnie. She knew why Ronnie was so excited to go to college and she also knew why Ronnie kept rubbing the fact in her face. She smiled a small smile and said softly, “Can’t wait to get Archie to yourself, huh?”

Veronica bobbed her head in excitement. “Can you imagine it? Me and him together at business college! Of course I really don’t have any interest in business, but Daddy wants me to have some sort of understanding when I inherit his company. Of course if I’m married to a certain someone, I won’t have to worry about that…” She giggled in excitement and clasped her hands together, eyes shining. Betty just slumped down further in her seat, looking at her halfway eaten banana split as Veronica continued talking.

“Oh, did you hear that Moose proposed to Midge and she accepted?! I’m sooo happy for them! Of course I knew it was coming. And Juggie is going to culinary school! Apparently it’s far away from Riverdale and where Archiekins and I are going, but I’m not heartbroken one bit! And—OH! There’s Archie now! Excuse me Betty! ARCHIEKINS!!!”

Betty watched as Ronnie jumped up and latched herself onto Archie’s arm. The two walked together over to the counter and sat on the stools talking excitedly about their plans for the future. Betty sighed in defeat and played with her spoon. It looked like she had finally lost to Veronica. She had known it was inevitable, but still…

“Is anyone sitting here?”

Betty looked up to discover trickster Reggie Mantle pointing to the spot that Veronica had vacated only moments earlier.

“Not anymore,” Betty sighed.

Reggie sat down with his root beer float and began sipping it rather too loudly for Betty’s taste. But then everything was annoying her at the moment so she didn’t say anything and continued looking forward blankly. After awhile Reggie finished his float. Pushing it away from the edge of the table with a happy sigh, Reggie leaned back and looked at Betty. She felt her cheeks start to heat up and he stared at her intently. What was he doing?

“I’ve been thinking….” Reggie said slowly after a minute.

“Really? That’s new,” Betty smiled teasingly.

“Hey, I may not be as smart as you, but I can dish out jokes and insults like no other, so don’t start in one me,” Reggie teased back. “Now as I was going to say before being interrupted…we’re going to the same college so I thought we should drive down there together. It will save your parents gas money because I’m taking my car with me. No point in driving down there separately.”

“Really? You’d do that?” Betty asked. Reggie? Being nice? What was going on?

“I asked, didn’t I?” Reggie said sarcastically, “So what do you say?”

Betty sat back and thought for a moment. Casting a look over at Archie and Veronica who were now sharing malt, Betty made up her mind.

“Sure…I’d like that a lot.”

The next three months flew by like a dream. Before she knew it, Betty was packed up for college and waiting for Reggie to pick her up. Both of them had sent most of their belongings ahead of them and only had enough clothes with them for a stay at a hotel.

Betty and her parents were sitting in the kitchen. Her mother was rambling on about how Betty had grown up so fast, and her father was putting in a comment or two every now and then. They had spent the previous day together as a family. Betty’s mother had almost driven her crazy with her spontaneous crying bouts, and her father’s long-winded embarrassing stories of how Betty was when she was younger. At least it made leaving a little bit easier.

Just as her mother was about to start another story, a knock came from the door. Betty jumped up excitedly, thankful that Reggie was on time—she couldn’t take much more of this! Her parents rose with her and followed her to the door.

“Oh Betty, I’m so proud of you!” Betty’s mother said tearfully as she gave her daughter a final hug.

“I know mom,” Betty smiled warmly.

“Be careful on your way out there,” her father said, “I already had a talk with that boy should anything happen to you.”

“Dad!” Betty exclaimed.

Her father chuckled and gave her a hug. “I love you, Bets.”

“I love you too! Bye!” Betty said as she grabbed her backpack and opened the door. Reggie was leaning against the side of the house just next to it.

“Ready to go?” he asked.

“Definitely!” Betty said, exasperated.

“Parents giving you a hard time?” he asked as he escorted her to his car.

“Kind of,” Betty said smiling, “Let’s just say I don’t feel too bad about leaving right now.”

Reggie laughed as he opened the car door for her, “You and me both!”

Betty got in and threw her backpack in the backseat next to Reggie’s. After he got in, he turned on the car and pulled away from her house.

“Do you like ‘Dead by April?” he asked as he held up his Ipod.

“Like? Love more like it!” Betty exclaimed.

“Really?” Reggie said, raising an eyebrow, “And why does a sweet, innocent girl like you like such a hard metal band like them?”

“Watch it Mantle!” Betty said, playfully punching his arm, “You’re going to be seeing a lot of me in the next four years!”

“Well, that is the plan,” Reggie said under his breath.

“What?” Betty asked.

“Eh? Oh nothing!” Reggie blushed as he turned on his music and turned the volume up. “New York here we come!”

The next four years flew by for both Reggie and Betty. They were the only people from Riverdale High at their college, and stuck around each other a lot. They went home together on holidays and would spend time with their families and friends.

Strangely enough, each time Betty came back to Riverdale, the less she wanted see Archie. She had thought that absence would have made her heart grow fonder, but instead it hadn’t. She had no idea why she now did not get excited when she thought of dates with him. Little did she realize that it was because of Reggie.

By their senior year in high school, Reggie had taken more and more notice of Betty. He hadn’t gone steady with her only because of carrot-top—he knew that Betty still had a thing for him. When he had discovered that they were both going to the same college, he had become elated. Maybe the separation from Archie and more time with him would make her loose interest in the clumsy boy.
In their first year of college, Reggie hadn’t been too forceful with their relationship. He had just hung around her a lot, being there for her when she needed him and partnering up with her in class when there was a project. In some ways, this was also for his own comfort as well. New York City was huge, a lot different from Riverdale. It was intimidating sometimes, and it was nice to now that he could take comfort in having someone who shared his thoughts.

By second year he became for flirtatious with her. He bought her roses on Valentine’s Day and took her out to dinner on her birthday. He repeatedly rejected dates and made sure that whenever Betty had no homework that they were together.

He finally made his move the third year, asking Betty to be his girlfriend. She had been surprised at first but had agreed. That Christmas break back at Riverdale, the whole gang was surprised to discover that they had hooked up. Everyone that is, except from Veronica, who told Betty that she had seen it coming—Reggie obviously had become Betty’ most trusted friend over the course of their years in college.

Finally came the day they graduated from college. Both of them were offered jobs at the New York Times, which they readily accepted. They remained a couple and moved into the same apartment complex.

Life was looking pretty good for them both, until one day when Reggie got a call from his dad.

“Son, I want you to move back to Riverdale. I plan on retiring from the newspaper soon, and I want you to take over.”

Reggie couldn’t believe his ears. Him? Take over the paper? That had been his dream! He opened his mouth to say yes, when a certain blonde popped into his mind.

“Betty,” she said into the phone, “She comes.”

“Yes, she can come,” his father said, sounding perplexed, “Why would I object to that?”

“I mean, give her a job,” Reggie said flatly.

He heard his father sigh. “Reggie, it’s not that simple,” he explained, “Jobs are scarce, and—”

“Both of us or nothing,” Reggie said sternly, “I mean it.”

The phone was silent for a few minutes. “Alright, I’ll give her a job too,” his father said, caving in, “But are you sure she’ll want to come?”

Reggie smiled, “Oh yeah. We’ve been going steady for some time now. I love her, and she loves me. But if she really wants to stay here…then I’m going to as well. No if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. Now goodnight dad.” Reggie quickly hung up the phone before his father good argue and went to find Betty.

Three months later Reggie and Betty were back in Riverdale. Reggie had rented an apartment and Betty had moved in with her parents temporarily.

On the night they came back they went to Pop’s to celebrate.

“Thanks for coming down here with me Bets,” Reggie said as he watched Betty down her chocolate malt, “You have no idea how much this means to me.”

“No problem Reg,” Betty smiled sweetly.

Reggie’s heart flip-flopped. He loved Betty and wanted her to be happy.

“Are you sure you’ll want to live here in Riverdale again?” he asked quickly, “I mean, I know that the job at the New York Times was cool and all…”

“Yes Reggie, I’m fine!” Betty laughed. “Besides, we were small fry at the Times. Here…here we’re with people we know and love. Besides…”she added, her face going red, “I’d be happy anywhere….if I was with you.”

Reggie smiled. There was something he wanted to ask her, but before he did, there was something he had to tell her first.

“Archie broke up with Veronica.”

Reggie watched the beautiful blonde’s face closely. It went from surprise, to questioning, to pity (probably for Veronica), and then back to neutral.

“That’s too bad. I should call Veronica and talk to her about it, she probably needs a friend right now.”

Reggie stared at her, heart hammering. “What about Archie?”

“What about him?” Betty asked, confused. “He’s a boy; he can take care of himself. Anyway, he’s got Jughead to confide in.”

Reggie could have leapt for joy. As it was, he had to suppress a shout. She had finally gotten over him! Betty was no longer in love with Archie! Reggie felt a bit bad for testing her like that, but he had to. He didn’t want her marrying him just because they had been together a long time if she still loved Archie. He didn’t want her to regret any choice she made.

Wow, he thought to himself, what happened to me? In the past I wouldn’t have cared how any girl felt as long as she was mine….have I really changed that much?

“Ummm….Reggie? Are you alright?” Betty asked.

Reggie snapped back to reality. The realization of what he was about to do almost made him choke with fear, but he continued.

“I would like to take you shopping tomorrow...”

“Ok….” Betty said, confused by his serious look.

“…for a ring.” He finished.

“A ring? What kind?” Betty asked. Reggie just continued to stare at her intently. It suddenly dawned on her what kind of ring.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” Betty squealed, “Are you…?”

Reggie got down on one knee and took her hand in his. “Betty…will you marry me?”

Part 2

"Holy smoke!"

Betty and Reggie turned towards the source of the exclamation. It was none other than Jughead Jones. Other the years, he had grown, just like the rest of the gang. He had filled out a little more to fit his lanky frame, and his usually unkept black hair had been trimmed neatly at the sides.

"Juggy!" Betty squealed.

Jughead looked at the couple, his brain processing the information: Betty. Reggie. Kneeling. Ring. BettyReggieKneelingRing!

"Uh...sorry to interrupt...I'll just be uh....going now...yeah..."

"Wait Needlenose!”

Jughead didn’t wait. He quickly made his escape through the door, a thousand thoughts spinning through his head. “Boy….is Archie gonna be mad!”

“Jughead!” The sound of Betty’s voice stopped him dead in his tracks. He might not hold Reggie in high regard, but Betty was a special friend. Heck, he had even had a crush on her once upon a time. Sighing in defeat, he turned around. “Yeah Bets?”

“You can’t tell anyone…not Veronica…and especially NOT Archie,” Betty said, “I want to be the one to tell them…they might not understand…especially Archie. Why, I bet you’re wondering why I would even consider marrying Reggie, but you see—“ “I don’t need to know.” Jughead cut her off. Betty blinked in surprise, “What?” Jughead took a deep breath and continued. “I said, I don’t need to know. It’s not my place to judge your decisions. A lot of years have gone by, so chances are Reggie isn’t the obnoxious prankster I remember. We’ve all grown up, and I respect your ability to make decisions for yourself. All I can do is…congratulate you.”

Betty stared at her tall friend. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she hugged him tightly. “Thank you, thank you!” Jughead smiled and hugged her back. “Don’t worry…no one will find out from me.”

The next couple days were hectic for the newly-engaged couple. Besides Jughead, the only people that knew were their parents. Betty was planning on telling both Veronica and Archie, but she just hadn’t had the time, what with moving back in to her parent’s house and getting acquainted at her new job, she barely had time to see Reggie. So when a free day rolled around for both of them, they made it a date and went to look at dresses and other wedding items at the mall.

“So when do we want to get married?” Reggie asked as he sipped his coke. It was noon, and the couple had taken a break from shopping and were eating in the food court.

Betty leaned across the table and glanced at the planner Reggie was looking in. “Well, I’ve always wanted a fall wedding. It would be nice to have a wedding outside with all the leaves turning colors. So how about….September 30?”

“Hmmm…sounds good,” Reggie said as he penciled in the date, “Now what about—“

“Hey guys!”

Betty cringed slightly at the sound of a certain carrot-top’s voice. “Archie.” Reggie said.

“Hey Bets, Reg,” Archie said, a smile plastered over his freckled face, “Whatcha doing? I haven’t seen either of you since you got back, which kind of surprised me.”

Betty shifted uncomfortably in her seat as she felt Archie’s eyes land on her. “Especially you, Bets,” he said in a sweet, low voice.

Reggie cleared his throat in irritation. Archie turned around and gave him an angry stare. “What? I’m just asking Betty out on a date…it’s not like you two are serious! It’s just like high school again!” Reggie kept his mouth shut. Every single molecule in his body wanted to scream at Archie, but he knew that this was something that Betty had to take care of herself.

“Yeah Bets?” Archie asked, going sweet again.

“Reggie and I…are getting married.”

Archie’s mouth fell open. There was an awkward silence as he worked his mouth, trying to get words to come out. Finally, he said, “What the heck? Are you serious?! YOU?! MARRYING REGGIE?!”

Betty frowned. “So what if I am?”

“Because it’s just not right!” Archie exploded, “You were always my girlfriend! What would make you marry my rival, my nemesis?!”

“Don’t talk about Reggie that way!” Betty could feel her blood boiling, “And I was never really your girlfriend! I was your backup for Veronica! And don’t you dare try and deny it! The only reason you’re here asking me out is because she dumped you!”

Archie stared dumbfounded at the blonde. He had never seen her so upset and passionate before.

“You heard her Arch,” Reggie said, finding it impossible to stay silent any longer, “We are getting married. And you know why? Because I love her and she loves me. You’re going to be invited to the wedding of course, as long as you don’t try and ruin it.”

Archie turned his attention to Reggie. “You…I…Betty…but!” He shook his head in frustration; one part of him was happy for the two while the other was absolutely furious. Betty was right of course, and he knew it…still, he was only human. “Look…I’m going to have to think about this for awhile…see you guys later…” He turned and stormed off in the direction he had come.

Betty sighed and sunk down in her seat. “Oi, that didn’t go so well.”

“But it didn’t go really bad either,” Reggie pointed out, “Give him time. If he really values you as a friend, he’ll respect your decision, just like Jughead did.”

Betty smiled and kissed him, “Yeah.”

The months leading up to the wedding flew by. Veronica turned out to be a lot more understanding than Archie had been, even though she was jealous that Betty was getting married first. She was made Betty’s maid of honor, and insisted on renting out the most expensive and beautiful place so Betty could have her dream wedding.

Archie eventually accepted the idea, much in part to therapy sessions with Jughead. A part of him was still jealous and hurt, but perhaps that is what happens when one realizes what they had and lost.

Reggie’s best man was Chuck Clayton. Since leaving Riverdale, Reggie really hadn’t had time to make many close friends, and Chuck was the closest thing he had to a best male friend.

All of their old high school friends and teachers attended the wedding. Moose and Midge, who had gotten married shortly after high school, even came back for the wedding from their new home in Florida.

Before they knew it, it was the middle of winter, and they were under a mountain of deadlines at the paper. Reggie had been staying in late every night working. Betty had been helping him until very recently; she had started complaining of being sick and feeling under the weather, which was unusual for her and Reggie was starting to get worried.

Tonight was another night when Reggie was working alone. Everyone else had gone home and he was busy fixing the layout and rewriting articles. His shirt was unbuttoned, his tie thrown to the side, and a several empty cups of coffee littered the floor around his desk. Sighing, he pushed back in his chair, running his hands through his unkempt black hair.

“Are you ok, Reg?”

He instantly straightened. “Betty!” he exclaimed in surprise, “Are you sure you should be up? You look pale! What are you doing here?”

Betty sighed and walked over to his desk, pulling up another chair and sitting on it. “You know that I went to the doctor’s today…” she began slowly. “Yeah…” Reggie said, his mouth going dry. What could be wrong? “…well, just to put your mind at ease, because I know that you’re freaking out right now,” Betty smiled, a twinkle in her eye. Reggie smiled sheepishly and let out the breath he’d been holding. “Nothing’s wrong…”Betty repeated, “It’s just that…” Reggie was sure that Betty could hear his heart thudding in his chest. “I’m…pregnant.”
