Future site changes...
« on: December 20, 2008, 01:49:06 AM »
In the coming months, I am planning a major site overhaul:
New version of the forum software (lots of new features)
New portal system (this one isn't compatible with the new version of the forum software at the moment and I have no idea if/when it will be)
New theme (this one isn't compatible with the new version of the forum either)

I am currently looking at a couple of different options as far as a new theme:
OverView Lite
Silent Wave

Which theme do you like best? We will need to design a new logo for the new theme as well.

It will probably be another month or two before I actually perform the upgrade - I need to make sure everything will look pretty and work well before I just upgrade.

I tend to prefer Silent Wave myself, only because the OverView one looks slightly more bland.

I just hope the new look will be just as flashy as this one.

I'd go with Silent Wave, too, but...what's wrong with the current look?

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

The theme we're using now isn't compatible with the new version of the forum system. There aren't many themes for that version yet, but I can check and see if/when the author of this theme plans to upgrade it for the new version of the forum software.

And...why are we getting new forum software?

We're not. It's the same forum software, just a newer version.

That's the "Light" version of OverView. The regular version can be seen here, but I think it's too dark.

Simply put, it has a lot more features. The arcade, gallery, related topics, etc. aren't going anywhere - those will still be here.

As I said, it will still be another month or two before I actually do the upgrade, so there's plenty of time to decide on a new theme.

Slight change of plans here... I just heard back from the guy who designed this theme, and he said he will be updating it for the new version of the forum software once RC1 is out (which should be within the next month or so). I will hold off on upgrading until after that theme has been updated. However, the new portal will still allow us to use any theme that's compatible with the forum system, so I can always install additional themes later on as well.

All I care about is the content.....why when we were younger, we read our posts in green or amber text on a black monitor...  all we had were are stream of ones and zeros and we had to convert them to ASCII by hand... then, they switched to pure hex and we had to memorize the binary pattern, convert and reconvert.

That's IF we could get a connection to the BBS on a 2400 Baud modem dialing via a local number that connected us to data-pak and allowed us to exchange the ....

:)

I'm just happy we have a forum.

It *would* be cool if Archie (the company) "donated" some graphics exclusive to this forum for us! (hint, hint)
No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.

One further update sort of related to this...

I have decided to take advantage of a super bargain and am going to be switching to VPS hosting in the next month or so. I am doing this not because I need to (I'm happy with this host and am not close to outgrowing the current plan), but because the bargain is too good for me to pass up, and it will be better for this site in the long run.

For those who are technically-challenged, VPS is basically a way to run multiple independent computers on the same physical computer. This will give me a lot more control over the setup, allowing me to tweak things to best meet the needs of the site, resulting in better performance. It will also give us a lot more room for future growth, with 10 times the space (35GB instead of 3.5GB) and 6 times the bandwidth (300GB instead of 50GB).

The actual changeover will likely occur in two to three weeks, but I will send out an email before this so it won't be unexpected.
