  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

Ella Cinders--a comic strip lost in time--a review
« on: April 28, 2011, 11:41:44 AM »
Ella Cinders is a very fun, well-written comic strip from the 1920s, a re-telling of the Cinderella story that sends a cute Flapper girl to Hollywood despite the nastiness of her step-momther & step-sisters. The main character, Ella Cinders, greatly resembles Louise Brooks or Colleen Moore, from this era's silent films. She is accompanied by her little brother, knicknamed Blackie, who assists with the comic relief.
Combining witty banter & a soap opera theme, it could be very successful today! :coolsmiley:

Some of our characters--

A Sunday Color strip

Here is a re-pubished collection on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1450508197/ref=cm_rdp_product

This reproduces material from newspaper sources, so it is a little hard to read here & there.

But so what? This is a comic strip that DESERVES to be rescued from the Limbo of forgotten funnies, & I hope to see a second volume, & soon!
BTW--I am not affiliated with the authors in any fashion.

{sigh} Too many comic strips have vanished forever from the memory of Fandom--popular in their own time; now lost to the passage of years, decay of newsprint, & the slow death of the American Newspaper.{/sigh} :'(

Interesting stuff- I'll look into it. I got into "Bringing Up Father" a while back (a story about a trashy guy who strikes it rich, and is roped into being part of "society" with his social ladder-climbing wife and daughter, and frequently bullied by them), and I was impressed with how funny it was.

I know who this girl is. I have met her in books about old comic strips, BTW.:)

I'm a HUGE connoisseur of old comic strips, too.;) (Like Little Nemo In Slumberland, The Gumps, and many others, BTW!)

Oh, and thanks for recovering that website I thoughtlessly deleted, too! You should read all the other old comic strips as well.:)

Comic strips are often pure genius!  IDW's Library of Comics (I think that is the imprint) has been doing an amazing job of reprinting in the past few years.  I'm a little addicted to be honest.

No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.

I read the whole thing and Ella Cinders is a very strong young female character that I can really relate to!:)

What's funny is how they basically gave the character a huge, well-hyped debut, pushing her into the limelight immediately. Newspaper strips were BIG business back then- and got hype comparable in their time to what comic book companies do today. Think of Kevin Keller and Ella Cinders, and you'll see the link. Funny when you think about what comic strip creators have to do today- getting their strip in only a few papers to start, and then MAYBE getting hype about five years later.

Seems like a waste of time to even bother getting a strip in the paper.  You're basically competing with 30 strips that have subsisted on generic mediocrity for eons, and anything but that will probalby be looked down upon.

Maybe when newspapers all finally go from print to digital, pointless strips like Marmaduke will vanish.

I can't imagine anyone clicking on a Marmaduke comic strip on purpose.  People only read it because it's on the same page as something they were already reading.

Marmaduke was okay.  It's those Family Circus people you really have to be wary of.  ;D

I LOATHE that huge, spoiled beast who runs the family house like his own doggie palace! >:(

You show good taste, as both strips show stylish art & good writing.

Man, some of these "Bringing Up Father" ones are great :). I think Jiggs is what would happen if Archie and his wandering eye ever actually tied the knot.
