Help grade my comics
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:40:57 AM »
Okay, so the other day, I got Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #320 for $9, that looks to be in 6.0/Fine condition. Even if this turns out to be 4.0/Very Good, I still came out ahead and it is still my most valuable comic.

So here are the pictures:

Front cover: http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/agb_amp_v320fc.JPG.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1
Back cover: http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/agb_amp_v320bc.JPG.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1
A page: http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/agb_amp_v320cf.JPG.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1

The three big defects, which I think would knock the book down to Fine, are the bottom right corner crease on the front, the crease near the staple on the back, and the slight spine roll.

I included a picture of one of the pages against a white background, because I don't know if the pages would qualify as white or off-white.

Anyone more knowledgeable about comic grading able to help me?

EDIT: I was looking at pictures of other books, and this: http://www.mycomicshop.com/res/catimg_v/6/1/8/17256182_1_L.jpg older Archie comic seems to exhibit the same defects my AGB&V 320 has - the edge staining, the spine crease, what looks to be the lower corner creasing, and mycomicshop.com still calls it a 6.0. Are standards more lenient for Golden Age books as opposed to Copper Age?

Your pictures are really too dark.  But from what I see I think it looks like a fine.  I would not grade it any higher and would possible consider it a VG/F as there are many spine ticks and what looks like a stain on the back cover.  See right above the W at the very top. I see a greenish tint.

All in all a great copy and find!  Enjoy it.

$9 seems like a good deal for that book. As NCN pointed out, the pictures are suboptimal for grading. I would put the book in the VG+ to VGF range. I don't see anything in the pictures to take it lower than that. I think the big crease on the back will keep it out of FN.

Very cool :)

Offline 100DollarHeadache

You know what? I thought that green area was a trick of the light, but it's a stain. VG/FN sounds right. It looked much better from the front, and the VG books I've seen look quite a bit worse. Still, there goes my plans of sending it to the CGC, it would be the lowest graded copy in the census.

Finding Archie comics in collectible condition really is much harder than finding Marvel or DC books in the same condition.

While you're at it, help me in grading what could possibly be a higher value book if it grades higher than I think, my Madhouse Digest #1:

Doesn't lay flat: http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/madhousedigestnotflat.JPG.html

Sorry about that last picture having a lot of whitespace. The program screwed up on me.

I'm thinking Fine because it doesn't lay flat and because of that crease.

Yeah, Fine seems about right.
I have so many Archies, I've lost count!  :D

I just picked up a Madhouse comic as I was curious.  It is a strange comic for Archie.  Reminds me of DC's Plop.  I was thinking of searching for some of the Madhouse digests.  Do you like them?

Yes, Archie comics are extremely hard to find in good condition.  However, they are not rare either.  I was at a show earlier this year and a dealer had two books full of late 70's Archie comics and was selling them from a $1 each.  Couldn't really move them much either.  I am looking for 80's stuff so I pass them up as I had too many other wants that day.

My suggest is go to the shows as you will be surprised.  There always seems to be one dealer in the mist that has higher grade Archies.  I still think that B&V is in great condition and presents well.

To be honest, I didn't get much out of it. I really only bought the digest because it looked so good for an older digest.

Sorry to burden you guys with grading two more comics, but they both look promising:

Archie at Riverdale High #103 (Cheryl's last appearance of the 80s):

I've got three more, I'm saving them for tomorrow.

I find it hard to locate MadHouse digests...in fact, of all the titles of digests that I own, I don't own a single copy of a MadHouse Digest!

And here's the last three that I think might be of any value, Jughead #1, Veronica #1, and Sonic #33, in my gallery: http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/?g2_page=3

The "g" in Jughead has a little blob of adhesive or something, and that's a hair below the "h".

Offline Zach Ziggster

Oh wow!  Yours looks identical to mine!   :D  http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/Zachary+Ziggster/pride/JV2+1.html

I'd say maybe VF+ for both of ours.  Maybe NM-.

Offline 100DollarHeadache

Thanks for that.

I have the AGB&V recorded as a 5, the digest recorded as a 6.5, and the Jughead as a 9.

I saw something that was a 4.5 VG+ in a slab that looked way rougher than my AGB&V, in addition to having a bigger stain on the back.

Okay, so how would you guys grade the Sonic, the Veronica, the Archie at Riverdale High, and the Betty and Veronica?

Offline Ecks

Grading just by pictures is imprecise, as the scanner doesn't show all defects, but I can give you a rough grade at least.  Learning to grade isn't terribly hard, I just find it's best to grade cautiously, and not overgrade.

Archie at Riverdale High #103 looks pretty solid, VF/NM (7.5-8.0) leaning towards just under NM.  Hard to say without seeing the interior pages for discoloring, or how bad the spine creases are, etc.

Betty & Veronica #1, Jughead #1 & Sonic #33 all look NM, I don't see any defects offhand. (9.0+)

Veronica #1 looks NM as well.  The stain might make it NM- or less, it's hard to say without knowing what the stain is caused from.  (8.5)?  It's also a "Direct Edition" (distributed to comic stores, not newsstands) which makes it more rare.  My collection I try for 100% Direct Edition books, which is very difficult for Archie so far.  :(

Offline 100DollarHeadache

Yeah, you've clicked on the images for the zoomed in view, right? Betty and Veronica #1 (especially) shows more defects when zoomed in.

Two more books to grade. Click to zoom.

Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #63:

http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/agbv63bc.jpg.html

I'm thinking G/VG because of the tears, chipping, and small piece out on the back spine corner.

Jughead #325:

http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/jug325fc.jpg.html
http://www.archiefans.com//v/useralbums/HundredDollarHeadache/jug325bc.jpg.html

I'm thinking VG. The faded spots were originally thick drips of blue and yellow paint - I scraped them off. Would that have made the book fair or poor before?
