  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

Grading just by pictures is imprecise, as the scanner doesn't show all defects, but I can give you a rough grade at least.  Learning to grade isn't terribly hard, I just find it's best to grade cautiously, and not overgrade.

Archie at Riverdale High #103 looks pretty solid, VF/NM (7.5-8.0) leaning towards just under NM.  Hard to say without seeing the interior pages for discoloring, or how bad the spine creases are, etc.

Betty & Veronica #1, Jughead #1 & Sonic #33 all look NM, I don't see any defects offhand. (9.0+)

Veronica #1 looks NM as well.  The stain might make it NM- or less, it's hard to say without knowing what the stain is caused from.  (8.5)?  It's also a "Direct Edition" (distributed to comic stores, not newsstands) which makes it more rare.  My collection I try for 100% Direct Edition books, which is very difficult for Archie so far.  :(

On the Veronica, is the stain on the inside front cover?  I think I can faintly see it from the front but not sure.  Anyway, a stain will knock the grade down alot.  Like a full grade.  If I was a buyer and that comic was sent to me as a NM- with a stain, I would return it.  IMO, it is not any higher than VF-.

Yes, grading via pictures especially the smaller ones in this gallery are impossible to correctly grade.  You really need to post them over in photobucket in a larger format.

Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #63:

I cannot quite tell how many tears there are on the front cover.  I am split between G/VG or VG-.  You have the tanning issue which is a biggie for me as it makes the paper brittle.

The Jughead, I have no idea what to grade that one.  I would be interested to hear what others say.  I believe that paint whether accidential or planned is considered touch up/restoration.

Wait, the full size photos are still too small? (After clicking on them). I don't have Photobucket Pro which would allow me to upload big enough images.

Nice to know the old Betty and Veronica comic is G/VG or better. If it was G+ or worse, I would have lost money on it. The pages don't feel brittle, I think.

If the paint's gone, isn't it un-restored? That's the kind of thing restoration removal entails.

The first set of pics you put up B&V 320 was larger.  These current ones seem smaller.  Yes I only have unpaid photoshop and they do resize the pictures.  You seem like you are really into CGC comics.  Have you ever posted over on the CGC boards?  They have a grading section where you can post scans and they will help with some grading feedback.  The site is also jam packed with information especially stories of first time submits.  The guys are a bit rough around the edges at first but it really is a great place to meet other comic collectors.

You're right about the size. The first set of pics is ~1000x1333. The subsequent pictures are about 1000 px high when fully magnified. All I wanted was a rough idea of condition, though.

On my newfound interest in CGC slabbed comics, I bought a slabbed Captain America comic for a friend's birthday gift, and I figured I wanted one of my books slabbed. I am only considering slabbing books that I either have a duplicate of in high grade (Cheryl Special #1), where I really like the cover and want to get it signed (Cheryl #18), or both (Mega Man #1), though.

As for the stuff in the shoutbox, yes, I know about the gold label for CGC witnessed signatures and the green label for unwitnessed signatures that basically means it's just writing and therefore a defect. But, when I go to the CGC site, it says I have to be a paying member of the Collector's Society to get the form.

As for joining the Collector's Society, I'm not sure what they would think of a guy whose collection is 99% Archie (got some Spider-Man FCBD books, but that's it), and of that, 99% Copper and Modern Age. I'm going to wait until I've diversified my collection some.

I also realize that it's strongly advised against to submit Copper and Modern comics worse than 9.8 because of the relative ease of finding 9.8 compared to Bronze and earlier comics, but I looked at the CGC census at gregholland.com and the comics I want to submit are not in the census, so even if they're not 9.8, they're still the first graded copies.

If you are not a member than you will need someone else to submit your books.  Your local comic shop may help you on that but there are services out there that could also prescreen and submit your comics to cgc.  The same goes for the signature series.  You can get someone else to set up the CGC witness.   But you seem to understand this already.

Let us know what you end up submitting.  I haven't either Mega Man and Cheryl up here for a second pair of eyes.

I looked on the CGC site - the store where I bought Mega Man and the Cheryl Special also does submissions.

Mega Man is PERFECT. 9.6 at worst. The Cheryl Special has very minor spine ticks (no color breaks) and a nick on the edge less than 1/16", not fully torn through - 9.4 or 9.6.

I looked at Cheryl #18 and realized it had a spine stress mark about 1/4". Is that 9.4 or 9.2 at best?

I'm out of luck on the signature submission, right?

I can find out more details about the signature series for you.  I believe how it works is you find out if a CGC approved witness will be attending the event.  You hook up at the event, give him the book and they get it signed.  I would think there is an extra charge for it as well.  The other way is to just mail the book to the witness and have them handle the signing.  Either way, the books is never suppose to be out of sight from the witness and the witness is the one that submits it to CGC.

Again, this is how I believe it works.  I can get you more information is you like.  I don't collect or submit CGC books.  I went to the CGC boards to learn more about comics and preservation of comics.  There are alot of knowledgeable posters over there.  Plus, I purchase comics there and met wonderful people.  So I stuck around.
