Little Orphan Annie , RIP
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:57:47 PM »
The running-since-the-1920s newspaper strip , " LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE " , has been discontinued . :-\  :'(
The Chicago Tribune , its syndicate's Tribune Media Services' base paper , wrote a story about this , but the " Trib " itself had not run the strip since  1992 ~;) :2funny:!
Conversely , the paper which actually ran it first , and which ran it until the end , the New York Daily News , which was once owned by the Tribune , with the syndicate named the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate , ran their own story...with the headline carefully spelling out that the Trib syndicate had stopped the strip ! ;D KInd of careful maneuevering there , eh  ?
Bluntly , there is a widely held belief that many daily newspapers tend to keep daily strips that have long since , perhaps , passed their best days because their fans tend to be older people , with lots of time & inclination to write & call the newspaper to complain when their favorite old strip is discontinued ( We won't even go into the current truism about " how old do you have to be to buy a nespaper therse days , anyway ??? :D " ! ) .
I tend to think that many folks here , if they knew " Annie " ( I suppose its literal title was different in its later years . ) at all , know it from the Broadway musical and its additional spin-offs , which was , in fact , whey the strip was started up as a new strip again in the late 70s after having been reprints only for a few years , anyway :D ;)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  I was having trouble getting something up yesterday , so , I did that shout...Now , I've managed to get this up :) . Soo... ;) :D
( However , I don't have time to put up specific links for the www.nydailynews.com and www.chicagotribune.com stories . Sorry . :-\ ??? :o )

Good riddance.

The creator, Harold Gray was one of the most arrogant, pitiless creatures under Heaven.

His political views, expressed openly in the strip, would be considered backward & barbaric in the 1860s, much less the 21st Century.

Some of the most repellent things i have ever read in comics came from Harold Gray's pen.

Contrast this with Walt Kelly's kindly & genial views, & his vastly superior art & writing, while you are at it.

I won't miss Annie.

I'm honestly kind of surprised the strip was still being printed as of 2010!

One of the newspapers based in Kingston, Ontario printed the Little Orphan Annie strip as recently as like 1992, 1993-ish, but it's been at least that long since I've seen the strip.

On a completely different, but related note, I loved the 1982 film!

The American Library of Comic Art (or something like that) is currently reprinting many excellent older strips from the 20's to present.  I've been buying these books and have been very happy with them.  Of course, I'm still working on getting all the "Terry and the Pirates" read, so I haven't seen the Little Orphan Annie material yet.  I'm a little scared to read them now -  with the review above. :)

Of course, I will read the material in the context of the time it was produced.  There were certainly a lot of different attitudes in the 20's to 40's that we have thankfully grown beyond.

The only way I read modern newspaper strips is via the magazine "Comic's Review" - and they only have limited material.  It would be great if someone collected all the modern strips into a monthly "comic book" of some sort ;)
No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.

...Uuh , heh heh heh .
First , just factually speaking , Gray died more than 40 years ago , in 1968 , and I think the political leanings that you obviously dislike about his strip were muted/muffled/ignored completely , at least in an active sense , by the divers creators who did the strip after him .

...I get " Comics Revue " myself , and it does not even print any contemporary strips !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really , the most recent thing it seems to be doing now is Jimmy Carter-era GASOLINE ALLEY strips .
( BTW , what is the point of the two - I guess - retired tramps/hobos , Rufus and Frank , was it?? Is that what they are supposed to be , " old-time train-riding ' hobos/' bums ' who've settled down ? )

...Relating to that , I always found it odd/interesting that they picked such a " tough guy " movies-associated a director as John Huston to handle it !!!!!!!!!!!

So what did Grey do that you consider that?

First , just factually speaking , Gray died more than 40 years ago , in 1968 , and I think the political leanings that you obviously dislike about his strip were muted/muffled/ignored completely , at least in an active sense , by the divers creators who did the strip after him .

John is right, just because someone picks up the pen, doesn't mean they will pick up the original author's morality.

And remember that you could put Archie in the same spot. It too could be considered "backwards" to some people. Just because you hate a comic strip doesn't mean others won't like it.
I think that artist Norm Breyfogle has shown remarkable restraint by not having Mr. Lodge twirl his mustache in every panel as the character's evil traits become more and more defined.-Chris Cummins http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/04/the_10_craziest_moments_from_life_with_archie_the.php

If I took a shot at writing an Archie movie, would anyone mind?

I don't know about that.  Seems he was very anti-labor, and we certainly have enough politicians trying to illegalize labor unions right now.  Other stuff he probalby believed in has an omni-presence in the discourse sadly.

Well, IMHO Walt Kelly isn't always kindly, though.

And yes, I agree, there are MANY old comic strips that needs cropping and bring in new artists with their new ideas, too!

Brunnette, I've always admired you.

But Kelly never abused anybody but the pompus & pretentious. Especially politicians.

Gray was in the full-time business of libeling the politics he disagreed with (worse than today), & blaming the poor & unfortunate for their plight.

And the less said about his notions of the morality of killing the better.

Didn't he once portray Santa Claus as shooting a man in the 50s? I recall the strip.

BTW Brunnette?
If you look like a brunette version of your icon,----how you doing? :smitten:
