What do you think of the newspaper funnies now?
« on: November 07, 2006, 07:19:33 PM »
The stellar ones are long gone now, including "The Far Side", "The Bloom County", and "Calvin and Hobbes" (personally, I think it's far overrated anyway!)

The "best" comics strips in print right now may soon be gone, too, like "For Better or For Worse", which I heard would be retired next year or so. I don't know about "Garfield", though - but the cartoonist himself is now over 60.

So what do you think is the BEST comic strips so far? And how about the state of the funnies today?

(I am working on a few comic strips to submit to the newspaper syndicates pretty soon, I hope! ;D)

I can't believe that you didn't mention the Archie strip.

That's just wrong on so many levels... ;)

Actually, I agree with you.  The golden age of cartoons, IMO, was the period between 1974 and 1991.  After that, they all seemed to be shells of their former glory.

I can't even remember the last time I LOL'ed at a Garfield comic.

Yes, that's a pretty creepy sequence. :-\

Needless to say, there are indeed a few good ones here and there, though.

Do any of you know that "Opus" (From "Bloom County" and "Outland") is in the Sundays. The local newspaper doesn't carry it, though.

And I have not seen an Archie comic strip in the newsaper in years, either. ;)

I have a lot of favorite comics - Dilbert, FoxTrot, Opus (usually), Garfield, BC, Dinette Set and Frazz are probably my absolute favorites, although the local papers haven't carried FoxTrot in years. I also like Get Fuzzy, Pearls Before Swine and Prickly City.

I'd say the best is Garfield & For Better or For Worse. I just hate that hey replaced Peanuts in my paper. I like thoses the best.\

To me, the state the funnies are in is okay. Some are funny & some are just plain stupid.
When it comes to food Archie Comics, I'm an expert.

The creator of Foxtrot just retired that strip about a month or so ago.  :'(

Until I picked up "Archie Day by Day" I had no idea an Archie strip was still being published. Hadn't seen one in FOREVER!

My favs are/were Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, Foxtrot, Rose is Rose, BC, the Wizard of Id, Opus/Bloom County, Blondie, Dilbert, Hi and Lois, Moose Miller, Family Circle, For Better or Worse, Doonesbury, Get Fuzzy.

And as soon I hit send I'll think of 10 more....

Fox Trot is still going. Fox Trot switched to a Sunday-only format as of the beginning of this year.

That's so weird about the Archie strips. I like them because they remind me of the four panel gags that used to run in the comics and in the digests - nice, short and just a simple joke. I notice that both Archie strips are by the same people - Scarpelli and Boldman.

The one on the Archie Comics site is older - the one there right now is from March 11th, 2005. The one on the Creators Syndicate site is the current one.

Yeah, Henry Scarpelli and Craig Boldman have done the newspaper strips since 1993, I believe.

Before that, I'm almost positive Dan DeCarlo illustrated them.

I like Get Fuzzy myself. There was this one called Retail which I thought was great til it was replaced in my towns paper by Scruffy Snuff or some other garbage like that...

stupid paper.

Those were awesome, Tuxedo Mark - really creepy and definitely not the usual style. Speaking of Garfield, there are a *lot* of sites popping up lately with modified Garfield strips. There's one, "LasagnaCat" I think, that has a guy in a suit acting out Garfield's part, and, at the end of each video, there's a music video. Very weird. Another just takes Garfield's speech bubbles away, leaving Jon to look like he's got some sort of mental issue that causes him to sit around, waiting for a response of some sort from his cat.

I actually only get the paper-paper on weekends, and, during the week, resort to keeping up with my comics online. I use Comics.com and ComicsCreator.com, which are both great sites for a lot of assorted comics. ComicsCreator.com features the Archie comic too.

I'm always sure to follow For Better or For Worse, Liberty Meadows, Rose is Rose, Pickles, Pearls Before Swine, Over the Hedge, Monty, Herb & Jamal Luann, Get Fuzzy, Frazz, F-Minus, Brevity, Betty, Ben, Arlo & Janis and Speed Bump. I'm also a fan of a lot of web-only(?) comics like PVPonline, Sheldon and Penny-Arcade. There are more too, but, those are my favorite. Some people start their mornings with coffee and news, mine starts with cereal and tons of comics. :2funny:

Oh you children! Comic strips from the 80s are now CLASSICS????
How about Popeye?
Dick Tracy? Flash Gordon? Li'l Abner? Peanuts? Dennis the Menace? Willie Lumpkin? I could go on!
By the way I have always disliked Garfield! I think it is just a bland-appeal-to-the-lowest-common-denominator-money maker...nothing more.
Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes being the two exceptions...great strips!
