Comic Organizer for Mac
« on: April 14, 2011, 06:28:05 PM »
Does anyone know of a good comic organizer/database for Mac?  I know Collectionz Comicz for Mac is going to be out (hopefully) in the next month, but I'm wondering if there are any others.  I've Googled, Googled, and Googled, but to no avail.  Also, I've tried Comics by Xidiar, but's it a pretty horrible program.  So, that's about it.  Do you guys know any good ones?

Thanks!

It depends on how much you want to get involved in populating the database - which comes down to how many comics you have and how much time you have.

Bento is fantastic as a personal database and you can sync it with a version for the iPhone and the iPad.  I like this for my Video Game collection as I can carry the data with me, update it on the go and re-sync to my desktop.

For comics, I have.... a few.  So I needed a large database built specifically for comics, with automatic updates of new books and pre-build fields, templates, etc, etc. There wasn't one for the Mac, so I went with ComicBase Archive Edition and run it under VMWare Fusion. (Windows 7).  I also use a barcode to scan in new comics and it works quite well. However, it isn't particularly cheap, so it is best to use if you are looking at a very large collection.
No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.

Okay, I'm going to download the trial of Bento and see how it is.

It would be nice to have one just for comics, with the details you were talking about because I too, have.... a few. :D  If Bento doesn't work out, I think I might either wait until Collectionz Comicz for Mac comes out, or use BootCamp, Parallels Desktop, or VMWare Fusion.

Also, which do you think is better, ComicBase or Collectionz Comicz?

Thanks for your help, Frank!  :)

I just tested out Bento.  It's great, but probably wouldn't be for a huge collection, just like you said.  However, I've only tested it for about 10 minutes, so I'm probably not giving it all it's glory.  :D

Thanks again, Frank!  :)

If you're interested, Collectorz.com will be releasing a Mac version of Comic Collector later this year (right now they're estimating it'll be out on May 17th, but that could change). I use the Windows version of this software and love it. See http://www.collectorz.com/comic/macpreview.php for more info.

I don't own a mac (mainly because I can't afford one), but looking around on Google, several people have recommended the following:

Delicious Library - software for cataloging lots of stuff.
Comic Book Lover - "the iTunes of digital comics" according to MacWorld
Comics 2

Google comic book cataloging software for mac for more info.

I tested out Delicious Library, and it didn't work that well with comics.  If I ever need to catalogue normal book, though, I'll know what to use.  :)

Also, I found out that unfortunately, Comic Book Lover is only for digital comics.

Lastly, I tried out Comics 2, but it is very simple and doesn't have all the features I need.

Thanks again for all of your excellent help!  :)

I'm a pretty big fan of ComicBase.  It seems well done and it certainly handles my 10,000+ collection quite well.  I've not tried the others and I use the Windows version, just because Inhave to run Fusion on my Mac anyhow.

Cool!  I think I'm going to have to wait until the Mac version of Collectorz Comicz comes out.  :(  Not because I don't like ComicBase, but because I can't afford Fusion or Parallels, not to mention Windows!   ;)   ;D

Thanks again!  :)

I just had a big "duh" moment.  I completely forgot that I have Wine, which works with X11 to run Windows programs on my Mac, without the need to install anything extra!

I'm now able to run the Collectorz Comicz free trial; however ComicBase says there is a "fatal error" when I try to install it.

I'll keep you guys posted.

I should've updated this like, three months ago, but I forgot!  Soo.....

Comic Collector for Mac came out May 19.  I successfully installed and loaded my collection into it.  I'm still not completely done, but I'm getting there.  Everything's working great!

Thanks again, guys!  :)
