  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

My local used CD shop closed
« on: July 19, 2010, 07:07:21 PM »
Okay, so I called my local used CD shop today (and, by "local", I mean in another city a half-hour away but still within the county) to place an order for "Mobile Suit Gundam 00", Season 1, Part 3. I kept getting a message that the number is no longer in service. I called the operator and 411 directory assistance to try to find out what was going on. Neither could help.

I'd used this used CD shop since at least 2004 to get used CDs cheap - but also (more importantly) to order new CDs and anime DVDs that fye doesn't carry.

I decided to drive there. There was a lease sign in the door. The guy in the business next door said my CD guy went out of business a few weeks ago.

This leaves me without anyone locally that can order stuff for me.

Mark, I understand your reluctance to get a credit card, but maybe you could get a debit card tied to a checking account.  You would save SO MUCH MONEY buying music and TV and movies over the internet instead of through brick-and-mortar stores in your area.

Sites like DeepDiscount.com have all those Gundam DVDs for half-off retail with free shipping.

Oh, no, I have both. It's just that I don't order stuff online.

And using my debit card for that would be RISKIER than using my credit card, because the money would be taken out of my actual checking account.

I know, but there's my mom to consider. Not only does she not like the idea of ordering stuff online, but, every time that a package would arrive in the mail, she'd be like "What's that?! You bought something again?! How much did you pay?!" I just don't wanna hear it.

And for your Archie needs, you can sometimes get amazing deals at Newkadia.com - they put the books up at current value, then deduct a certain amount each week thereafter until the book sells. In addition, they have plenty of opportunities to save even more (new customer discount, emails with discount codes, etc.).

It's none of your mother's business what you order online or what comes in the mail.  For one, you're 31 years old.  You're an adult.  You're capable of making your own decisions.  Besides, it isn't like you're ordering something illegal.  And, if you're really that aggravated with your mother getting on your case, why don't you get a plan started up so you can move out on your own?  Maybe that way, you could start to feel a little bit better about yourself, and maybe...just maybe...it'll give you the motivation to go out there and do what you want to do.

Years ago you would have been right to worry about credit card security!  But these days, consumers are never on the hook for credit card fraud.  According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers aren't responsible for fraudulent charges.  That's one reason online commerce works so well.

My own credit card has been compromised once.  The credit card company caught it before I did.  They asked if I made the charges and I said no.  The charges were wiped off my account and they sent me a new card.

You're way, WAY more likely to get your credit card info stolen at a real store than you are by using PayPal or Amazon.com or any large online retailer.  Promise!

One of these days, Mark is going to dip his toe into online ordering and then it'll be a flood when he realizes it's safe.

If you're still concerned about packages arriving at your doorstep, you can always get a PO box at the post office and have things sent there.

True!  I had a P.O. Box for years.  It worked like a charm.

I remember the local used tape/CD/record shop in my area of the world. I got some really good deals on used gothic and space rock tapes.

Yep, and I heard from some guy that came through my line at Kmart that around 20 businesses closed in this county last month.

Also, remember my used bookstore that closed earlier this year? It had been replaced by a "fabric outlet", but I just noticed a few days ago that it, too, has closed, and there's now a "now leasing" (or somesuch) banner on the building.
