  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

Suggestions for Good Pre-1996 Arcade Games?
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:03:57 PM »
Just downloaded MAME again and I have my 10 button game pad ready.  Got some of my favorite games for it so far, but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for roms for games I don't know about or have forgotten about.  Just make sure they aren't extremely obvious ones like Frogger or Pac-Man.  lol

Arcade games that I already have downloaded:

Aliens (both the US and Japanese version)
Avengers
Bucky O'Haire
Dark Stalkers (all games and versions)
The Simpsons
Super Street Fighter II (Champion Edition and Turbo)
Street Fighter Alpha III
Street Fighter Vs. X-Men
TMNT
TMNT II
Marvel Vs. Capcom
WWF Wrestlefest
X-Men
X-Men: Children of the Atom

Anything that uses 2D sprites, except for maybe sports games.  I liked NBA Jam, but in general, they're kind of boring.  And it doesn't technically have to be a pre-1996 game, but something in a similar style as opposed to all the polygon based games that came after that (like say Tekken).

Turtles in Time is always sweet- that was an Arcade game first, right? There was a pretty great "Jurassic Park/Lost World" FPS "Rail Shooter" from the late '90s, too. "Bad Dudes Inc." has the greatest opening sequence in history ("Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the President?"), and "Final Fight"  rocks the world, too. It seems like you got all the best games, though.

How does MAME work, anyhow? Do you just download the games right into your computer or something? I'm rather non-advanced with my computerial skills.
"Who knows what kind of den of corruption Riverdale could turn out to be?"- The Punisher, "Archie Meets The Punisher"

Well, MAME is like the architecture to the program.  You need a "front-end" to actually play it.  I'd say use MAMEUIFX since its the best one I've used so far.  You can find it here:

http://mame32fx.altervista.org/home.htm

Once you install, there should be a folder named MAME.  Within that folder, there will be another one named Roms.  Simply download the roms directly into that folder.  Don't unzip them.  You can then launch MAMEUIFX and it will detect the games in the folder so you can play them.

Normally, I simply go back and purchase games used, but unless you're Veornica Lodge, I don't think anyone actually has the ability to collect old arcade cabinets.

As someone who plays video games almost all the time (I especially love older arcade games) here are some:

Ninja Baseball Bat Man (side scrolling beat-em-up)
Touki Denshou: Angel Eyes (1 on 1 fighting)
Armored Warriors (side scrolling beat-em-up with robots)
Cyberbots (1 on 1 fighting, related to AW in story)
Strider (side scrolling action game)
EspRA.DE (vertical shooter)
Eco Fighters (horizontal shooter)
Marvel Super Heroes (1 on 1 fighter)
Fatal Fury 2 (1 on 1 fighter)
Savage Reign (1 on one fighter)
The Real Bout Fatal Fury series (1 on 1 fighters)
X-Men vs. Street Fighter (2 on 2 tag team fighting, with one in the ring at a time)
Guardians: Denjin Makai 2 (side scrolling beat-em-up)
Power Instinct Legends (1 on 1 fighter)
Vendetta (side scrolling beat-em-up)
The DonPachi games (vertical shooters)
Shienryu/Steel Dragon (vertical shooter)
Knights of Valour 2 Plus (side scrolling beat-em-up)
The King of Fighters '95 and '96
Samurai Shodown 2 (1 on 1 fighter)
Undercover Cops (side scrolling beat-em-up)

Here are some cool 2D games from after 1996:
JoJo's Venture and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1 on 1 fighter based on a Japanese comic)
Battle Circuit (side scrolling beat-em-up)
Progear (horizontal shooter)
Any King of Fighters game (1 on 1 tag team fighting)
Samurai Shodown 4
The Last Blade 1 and 2 (1 on 1 fighters)
Cannon Dancer (side scrolling action game similar to Strider; Strider's programmer worked on it)

Thanks for the list!  Already familiar with Marvel Super Heroes and X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, but I'll certainly try out some of the others.

And today, I beat both Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Simpsons: the Arcade Game.  Such great games. XD
