Sorry, Mark. I whistle a bit... usually not so loud as to annoy, and not too often, either... but, I present my driver's license with my credit card, and most places ask for id when you had 'em your card. I used to get the unscheduled, "Can you pick up a shift" hours too... far too often, and usually because the owner's sister (a fellow 'employee') was up late that night on eBay or something... Seriously. It happened often too. >_<

More random Kmart complaints:

We had another double-coupon event recently, this time for 7 days. It was so annoying.

Customers often use their debit cards to get cash back. Sometimes, this drains me of my large bills, so I end up giving customers $5s and $1s. Sometimes, the customers get mad and are like "You're not REALLY gonna give me all of those $1s." Yes, I am.

During the last cashiers meeting, we were told to not just go over to the service desk with a problem. We're expected to use our flashing lights. The problem is it often takes a long time for the service desk person to notice me. 1 girl was even sitting on the floor when I came over to the service desk (forgeting the rule). She was like "Use your light." I pointed out to her that she wouldn't have seen it, sitting on the floor. She paused for a moment then was like "Still."

During the last cashiers meeting, the store manager told us that our 15-minute breaks are a "luxury", and, while he wants us to take them, he said he might pull us off of our breaks, if it gets busy.

If you work a 4-hour shift, you don't get a break. A coworker recently told me that she read the rules regarding breaks, and, based on her understanding, if you work a 4-hour shift, you're entitled to a 15-minute break. She said the managers saying otherwise is their way of brainwashing us, because they don't want to deal with breaks.

Yes.  You should get a 15min break for every 2hrs you work.  Any Manager that can't arrange this is.... well... not "managing".

I used to manage over 500 staff at a luxury resort that got VERY busy and we ALWAYS gave our staff their breaks.  It's idiotic to expect folks to just keep working.  In fact, it's WORSE when it's busy, because that's when people really need their breaks (you just have to watch that they don't take 20 minutes! :)

As for the flashing light.  If they ever complain about you coming over to the service desk - just tell them "It may appear that "I" have come over to the Service Desk, but I am here because I am trying to serve a customer - so don't think of me as a cashier coming to the Service Desk - think of me as a representative of the "Customer" that is standing at my check-out and needs help"  :)

I recently had a customer while I was covering a lunch in garden shop. I was in a slightly bad mood (I'm not sure why; maybe because of the annoying Christmas music). The customer tried to get me to smile. She asked "What do I have to do to get you to smile?" I resisted the urge to answer her. In fact, I talked to her as little as possible. She stuck out her tongue at me, and, when I turned my head away, she followed me, so I'd still see it. She then gave me a noogie. I pushed her hand away. When the transaction was over, she looked at my badge and was like "What's your name? Mark? You shouldn't work with the public, if you can't talk."

I had another customer recently that swiped his card through the scanner and came to the Credit/Debit choice menu. He was like "Which one's Credit?" I replied "The one that says 'Credit'." He was like "I don't have my glasses with me! I know how to read!" I kept my mouth shut, but I gotta wonder how he got to the mall, if he didn't have his glasses with him.

I had a customer recently that refused a penny, because it was moldy. I had to open my drawer and get her another penny, because, according to her, no one would take the moldy penny.

I had another customer recently that gave me 93 cents in change. Really, just be normal about it and give me a $1 bill and take your 7 cents back.

I had another customer a while ago that got $50 cash back with her debit card. I gave her a $50 bill and closed the drawer. She wanted it exchanged for smaller bills. I told her that I can't give change. She said she'd wait until I opened my drawer again during another transaction. I told her that I CAN'T GIVE CHANGE. She was like "I can't use this!" Really? Well, she could have given it to me. I would have been happy to spend it. I told her that she could get change at the service desk. She was like "So now I'm inconvenienced, because you didn't ask me which bills that I wanted!" No, dummy. You're inconvenienced, because you didn't specify the denominations that you wanted while I had my drawer open.

Lol I personally hate moldy pennies....they're just nasty, I never use them....but when I get them I don't sit there and argue with the cashier to replace it...that's just weird and mental lol!!

:)  well.... I'm not so sure about the customer that attacked you for a smile, but the other ones were just being.... customers.

I've had customers that were "far" more demanding than those you describe.  :)

I think she's right. You really should look into getting a job that doesn't frustrate you so much.

That reminds me of a rude customer I had when I worked at the local water park a couple years ago. After giving them their change, the customer looked at the bills, then rudely said "Do you have any dry money?".

Oh, when I used to collect shopping carts in rain or snow, customers would just stare at me and say "These carts are wet".

Yes.  Yes they are. :)

I'm pretty sure that's illegal.  If this is happening, the Labour Board in your area should definitely be notified.

Yes, probably.  But every time-clock job I ever had would also violate this rule, especially when we got busy.  Or they would find some unfair way to get around it, like forcing people to take all their break-time when they first came in, or right before leaving (after working 7 + hours straight).

I don't know about the US, but this is how the law is in Ontario:

"An employee must not work for more than five hours in a row without getting a 30-minute eating period (meal break) free from work. The law does not require an employer to provide any breaks in addition to this eating period. However, if the employer does provide another type of a break, such as a coffee break, and the employee must remain at his or her workplace during the break, the employee must be paid at least the minimum wage for that time."

TM - I'm... actually shocked that a perfect stranger would harass you like that, going so far as to give you a noogie! That's... just strange! I think it was sort of nice of her to try getting you to smile, 'cause that shows concern, but, beyond that... I can't imagine doing that to someone I know, let alone someone I don't.... Granted, when I worked on one of the gambling boats down in Cape Canaveral, someone coming down one of the escalators behind me popped me on the head, thinking I was his niece, and apologized profusely when he realized I wasn't.

... I get mistaken, a LOT, for other people. -_-,

I have to say I disagree!  I can't stand it when people try to get me to smile just by telling me to.  If I'm not smiling, it's usually NOT just because I forgot and need reminding.

Maybe this belongs on the "Pet Peeves" thread...
