  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

US Akira Remake Plot, Proposed Casting Revealed
« on: November 30, 2011, 01:54:13 PM »
Found this today.  I thought it may be worth sharing.

Quote
Acting Auditions, an employment resource for actors, posted a plot description for the live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga on Tuesday. The short description was sent out as part of a casting call for extras and stand-ins in the film.

The description is as follows:

Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel.

Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers.

Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo's mind. Kaneda clashes with The Colonel's troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago.

Acting Auditions listed the following actors and actresses as having been cast in the film; however, the website provided no source for the news:

    Kristen Stewart as Ky
    Garret Hedlund as Kaneda
    Helena Bonham-Carter as Lady Miyako
    Ken Watanabe as The Colonel

The Twitch entertainment news site reported earlier this month that Warner Brothers offered Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins, Inception) and Kristen Stewart (Twilight, The Runaways, Snow White and the Huntsman) the roles of Colonel and Ky, respectively, and it reported in October that Helena Bonham-Carter (A Room with a View, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The King's Speech) had been offered the role of Lady Miyako. The Hollywood Reporter trade magazine reported earlier this month that Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Country Strong, Friday Night Lights) was in negotiations with Warner Bros. for the role of Kaneda.

I just have to say this hilarious.  This could end up as a bigger flop than that Drgon Ball movie.  And while all the changes are annoying, I like how they're arrogant enough to retain the Japanese names while still casting white actors in the roles.  But it's ok, because one background character is still Asian, right, Hollywood?  Yeah, you guys are totally not racist at all now. LOL.

Man, who was the brain-dead person who let Hollywood get the rights to this? I can only assume they tossed thousands of dollars at the creator or his company or something.

Not going to see it even for laughs, just because I really want it to tank.  Kind of hoping this puts a nail in the anime remake coffin.  I mean, I thought they would have learned their lesson with the Dragon Ball movie.  Not that I'm against Western people doing anything with anime properties (see Warren's Dirty Pair comic), but the Hollywood studio system doesn't have it's heard screwed on straight enough to take on something like this.

God yes, the Dirty Pair comic. I have almost the entire run of it. The anime is one of my favorite shows of all time.

I'm not against when we do something with anime properties per se, mostly against when these companies see something popular from a different place and get money bags in their eyes. I can get behind the Spielberg version of Tintin because it seems like it'll be faithful to the original. But with stuff like Dragon Ball Evolution and this, it seems like they're willfully flouting what made the originals so great.

There is also a film adaptation of Tuxedo Gin (a manga about a guy who dies and ends up in a penguin's body, it's really quite good) coming sometime. It's supposed to just be called Tux.
