WORLD OF ARCHIE JUMBO COMICS #63 came in the mail today and I read it. It has a great Halloween party-themed cover by Dan Parent (originally slated to appear on the Halloween issue of ARCHIE' FUNHOUSE DOUBLE DIGEST from last year, before that title was downgraded from 10 times per year to 6 times per year -- so it's good it finally got to see the light of day). NO new lead story in this issue. Instead, the issue leads off with a decent Dan Parent-written (and Dan DeCarlo-pencilled) Veronica story that sort of fits into the Halloween theme. There's also the conclusion of the 4-part DeFalco/Ruiz "Man From R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E." story, and another 22-pager both written and drawn by Fernando, which has a Halloween theme, too (I swear I've read this one somewhere before, but I can't recall where), and another Halloween-themed story where Chuck Clayton creates a new comic feature for the school paper called Monster High (years before the multi-million dollar franchise was a gleam in the eye of toy designers at Mattel). Apart from a couple of stories that only vaguely fit the seasonal theme, that's about it. Surprisingly, after so many months of being absent from the Jumbo Comics, the "From the Vault" section makes a return appearance with reprints of Archie stories from the fifties (both the time frame of original publication, and the issue numbers reprinted). Also of note, I think I counted something like 13 or 14 pages of Reggie stories (all one-pagers, apart from a single 6-page story) spread throughout the issue. The rest of the issue was fairly mediocre, and percentage-wise, this didn't feel all that Halloween-y either.

I'm thinking of letting my subscriptions to both the ARCHIE and WORLD OF ARCHIE digests run out, rather than renewing. I'm just growing bored with them lately. I guess I'll keep going with the JUGHEAD AND ARCHIE and ARCHIE'S FUNHOUSE digests, since they're only bi-monthly, and of course both B&V digests.

What happened to the Life With Archie reprints in WOA?

Archie #13 - this series is taking a new turn. I really like the boarding school/Mean Girls storyline with Cheryl.

Even the style of how the pages are laid out are different. The only disappointment was there was no Reggie. But at the e nd we get a small picture of Jason Blossom 💝.

Good question. Another good one would be, what happened to the Archie 1 reprints in WOA? Last month I was asking myself where the Cheryl Blossom reprints in B&V Friends digest went... a year ago, where the From the Vault reprints went to in the Jumbo digests. A year before that, what happened to the That Wilkin Boy reprints in the Jughead digest.

I can tell you exactly where the Little Archie reprints are, though. They're not in EVERY SINGLE ISSUE of EVERY SINGLE DIGEST... but they are pretty close.  DAMMIT!  :tickedoff:

I gave in & bought the digital copy of Jughead #10. I love it. Especially when Sabrina does spells on Jughead for ruining their date. She did a spell to make Reggie & Jughead friends, they hate each other.

What did you think of Jughead, Kiss, and Halloween Hex.

JUGHEAD #10 was good, the best so far of all the New Riverdale comics, IMO. I was pleased to see that my theory about what exactly was going on in Jughead's mind in the previous issue when he made the date was spelled out in so many words when Jughead admitted that on some level, he just wanted to hang out with a talking hamburger. On the other hand, I was wrong about him trying to back out of the date, but maybe he'd have been better off if he had -- since his obvious lack of enthusiasm resulted in a pissed-off Sabrina (which I also predicted). One frustrating bit occurred in the scene where Jughead was about to explain something to Sabrina, but she cut him off -- I wonder, just exactly, what he was going to say to her? One small niggling thing annoyed me, and that's how Sabrina showed up dressed for her date. Surely she's more fashionable than that? She's wearing a dress that looks like something a woman a couple of decades (or more) older would wear. Wouldn't she want to look her best to make a good impression on Jughead? Okay, not that it's going to matter to Jughead, but she couldn't know that beforehand. I was pleased by Derek Charm's interpretation of Salem, it's a different look, but I like it.

KISS #1 is a miss. I only got it because of the variant cover by Fernando, and I was curious, having enjoyed ARCHIE MEETS KISS by Dan Parent (otherwise, I've never been a huge Kiss fan). It was pretty ho-hum compared to that, and Kiss only appears on the last page or two.

DISNEY GIANT HALLOWEEN HEX #1 was an extra-length special starring Scrooge McDuck's perennial nemesis, Magica De Spell. Magica, in case you're not familiar, is a sorceress who constantly plots to steal "Old Number One", the very first dime that Scrooge ever made, and Scrooge obsessively fears that if he ever lost possession of it, all his worldly fortune would soon follow. Because Scrooge is the world's richest duck, and he's touched the dime so many times, it has a special quality whereby Magica hopes to acquire it, melt it down in the fires of Mt. Vesuvius, and turn it into a mystic amulet to give her a Midas touch, thereby making her the world's most wealthy duck. Here she's the main character (and we get to meet her kooky family for the first time), and Scrooge is barely in the story at all, except for a few pages at the end. Big thumbs up on this one.
