Author Topic: What if: Archie Comics Publishing was the distributor of Disney comics?  (Read 5919 times)

I'm at work (:)) - but here's a link to a copy for sale.

http://www.bonanzle.com/booths/CarlBarks/items/DISNEY_COMICS___UNCLE_SCROOGE__310_____Near_Mint__Condition

The European books are, unfortunately, not in english - I *think* they are Finnish.  The publisher is the famous Edgemont and they even have NEW stories coming out.

How's this for sad:  I actually had a dream that I went into my Comic Shop and there was a new issue of Uncle Scrooge.  It had a green cover.

:(  Sadly, it seems that day is far off, if ever.
No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.

Opps... I mean EGMONT, not Edgemont.

That US 310 is a recent issue. It has a $6.95 cover price! It's not even an old issue so what is the reasoning for it being so expensive, just low distribution?

This ebay listing is funny. It says a "website" values 310 at $300. I wonder if the seller and the website are one and the same? hmmm...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Uncle-Scrooge-310-plus-Set_W0QQitemZ280320079513QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item280320079513&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Sadly, I've gotten used to some of the foreign writing styles and actually look for some of the artist/writers. It just took some time to get used to their interpretations of the characters.

It is a new issue and distribution was very, very bad.  The website selling it for $300 is a good place (I've bought from them before), but sometimes the price they quote is a "set" price.  Meaning that in order to get the one book you need to buy the "set"

For example, The Carl Barks Library of WDC&S albums is a 51 set series.  In order to get a copy of 4 or 5 from them, you need to buy the "set" for $845.  It seems as if the one book is $845 if you look at the listing, but in fact, you get 51 books (and I just ordered mine!)

A reasonable price on the book would be $100-$200.  Which is what it fetches in most auctions.

It's not too terribly recent either.  It's a GLADstone book and not a GEMstone book (the publisher of the past few years.  Uncle Scrooge went to a prestige format with GLADstone just prior to ceasing publication with #318.  GEMstone started in the prestige format for Uncle Scrooge on issue #319 and maintained this until their recent....demise.... now I am sad :(

I'll have to go through my box to see if I have a $100 book in my collection. It would be quite funny if out of all my comics, the one in highest value would be an Uncle Scrooge book due to low distribution!

But then again, I wonder if I stopped buying them around that time due to the price? Hmm....

Offline Frank

oooooo!   The Uncle Scrooge #179!  If you want to sell that baby!  I have one, but am always interested in getting one in better shape.

Well...a little research and.... apparently Archie DID distribute some of the Gladstone books way back.

So there you have it.

...Just to revive this:
Of course , Boom! comics HAS picked up and revived the traditional " ducks and mice " Disney titles , re-starting Uncle $crooge , WDC&S , and Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse ( " and Friends " , in both cases ) in standard 32-pagers - generally !!!!!!!!! - selling for the now-standard $2.99 .
Something that was never quite explicitly spelled out here , to be fair to Gemstone , was , that their WDC&S and $crooge titles were , indeed , " mini-TPB "/Prestige Format almost-books , on slick paper with maybe (at most??) 4 pages of ads...and 60 of comics material !!!!!!!!!!! They did work out to slightly less per page than the 32-pagers which they also published for a while .

...About the 90s a bit , Archie did , in fact , publish titles of characters from " the Hanna-Barbara universe " ( tho I guess they're less known by that name now - Scooby-Doo , the Flintsones , etc. - since Warners/Cartoon Network consumed that ) , if that wasn't fully spelled out above :( .
Boom!'s new titles seem , initially to be getting improved distribution and sales from Gladstone's , from what I've seen yet .
They are , however , taking a gretly different approach from ALL the comics-shop era companies that've attempted to continue the " Ducks & Mice " Disney characters , as they seem to be totally ( as for now ) ignoring classic reprints in the standard comic books , and , furthermore , heavily emphasizing European material that tends more toward a " Disney-style version of today's entertainment adventure story genres " approach , with the issues so far featuring:
DD&Fs - A James Bond/Austin Powers , kinda , " spy spoof "/light spy story .

U$ - This one appears closest to the " traditional approach " , both in story & art , it appears to be Finnish .
MM&Fs - A sorta-LOTR-esque " " fantasy adventurers " story , with Mick , Don and others in a dragon/DRAGON-esque alternat world .
WDC&S - And here , and all-out superhero arc , with supe-hero versions of most of the characters ( Most of whom have , to be fair , appeared in American comic books - Though mostly marginally . - before . )  facing a Sinister Six-style grouping of ( Again , all?? introduced previously . ) Disney villians .
And , actually , all the titles except Scrooge have feaured long story arcs , none of which have concluded yet !!!!!!!!!!! To my knowledge - I get to the comics shop at the end of the week , Mon./Tues. , perhaps in this Wednesday's...
I've already seen Previews announcements of book publication of all of these arcs ( In hardcover EXCEPT for Mic...Whoo , booyy !!!!!!!!! ) .
The artstly/kind of background , especially?? in the WDC&S ones , is way more " modern " probably with far more digitally-helped draing and coloring .

...Don Rosa has retired and apparently has no more non-published in America stories .
WDC&S #700 had as a bonus a short story by one of the other artists (Whose name escaped me right now ??? and I am under a deadline :buck2: :knuppel2:) whom latter-day fans of the more " traditional " type have liked .
Its color is credited as having been done by Egmont , presumably not meaning the Italian publisher whom I guess?? have put together all the material Boom! has published to date - You can really tell the difference :o!!!!!!!!! - the Egmont-ed story has far more a " traditional " Disney look !
It is also a self-contained humor story , which I would like to see more of ;D .
At another , somewhat " older " , forum , comment was made that Boom! appeared to be moving away from Barks-style adventure stories , " rather in the 19th century Jules Verne/' Kidnapped ' tradition " .
Myself , just as I tend to go to Archie most of all for short humor stories which are GOOD more than I go to them for " event " stories or Archie's Weird Mysteries or Life With Archie-style " special/semi-serious " stuff ( Though that's part of it too !!!!! ) , I maybe , once we are beyond Bark's stories , especially his stone classic absolute best ;)!!!!!!!!!!! , I want humor from Disney .
Maybe , emulating what DC did in the 90s with their Superman titles , Boom! ( Who actually publish the Disneys under a Boom! Kids logo , inder which they publish Pixar- and Jim Henson-based titles , too . ) could supplement their 4 monthly Distitles , as above , w/a quarterly " DISNEY FUNTIME " , or whatnot , title concentrating on said short , humoror-oriented stories ?
I've seen some of the other Boom! Kids titles at newsstand accounts , therefore I presume that the Boom! Disneys are at non-comics shop places , too , but , I have not , that I can recall , actually seen any .
BTW , it appears that , whereas Gemstone went to some lengths to redialogue their European material for a " more American " feel , sometimes crediting known semi-pros for this chore , Boom! is sticking with the Italian company's English translation , resulting in a correct , but perhaps a little more bland " International English " feel , it seems to me - Which well may be a better idea , for all I know , considering the far larger amount of immigrants' children in the US and Canada of the last 20 years .
I guess Gemstone was meant to be a " successor " to Gladstone , which I guess was the Hamilton company's name for their Disney comics , and , given the Disney connection of the name , I presume they only used it on the Disneys ?

...I tend not to wear my glasses in the comics shop :buck2: .
Therefore , given Boom!'s cover policies...yes , Frank ???...I bought a different-covered version of UNCLE SCROOGE #387 the last time , after having already bought it :o!!!!!!!!!!!
Well :D , that gives me the chance to have it handy :D- now - for discussion .
  Which >:( , will have to wait :( , however .
  However , its two stories , " The Gold Hunt Part 2 " and " The Fateful Hour " are both w/Erik Headman d/Wanda Gattino , who also drew this ( Cover B ) edition's cover .
Both the name and the Finnish setting of " Gold " make me presume Erik to be Scandanavian .

BTW-- BOOM! Studois also puts out a very fine & fun series, The Incredibles. 8)

Art & storylines are both true to the film, & original & fresh.

And, I believe, very Archie-Fan-Friendly.

I could see an Archie/Incredibles crossover, someday.

And check out the graphic novel Incredibles collection from BOOM!, over on Amazon.

The Hardcover edition has a Jack Kirby homage under the dustcover, a  nifty plus!

PS--Please give my reviews a vote up. My initials are D.P.
