Whic states have both sea beach and snow?
« on: November 10, 2011, 10:48:20 AM »
What state is Riverdale in? They go to the beach in the summer, and they have snow in the winter; so which US states have sea beach, but also have actual winter (with snow)?
Could it be Minnesota?

Any state that borders Canada is a pretty good guess...keeping in mind that beaches can exist on lakes as well...

They revealled that Riverdale was in Missouri, but I had the belief that it was in New Jersey for many years...

does Missouri have sea beach?
and nah, i don't think its New Jersey, bcoz its so close to NY. in one story Archie says that New York is a very exotic place to them, so i guess they don't live anywhere near.

Given everything we know about Riverdale, it would almost have to be somewhere in the coastal regions of New England. New Jersey would actually be a good fit - they have lots of coastal beaches, hot summers, cold brutal winters, etc. There's nothing unusual about NY seeming like foreign territory to the gang - any area you don't visit frequently can seem like foreign territory, especially a city the size of NYC.

Hey I live in NYC, There are 5 boroughs here I live in Queens, and think the other 4 boroughs are foreign. Meaning Riverdale could be  in NY State even.
Riverdale could be in Long Island where Archie Comics is and think NYC is strange. NYC has snow and beaches. I think Riverdale is anywhere in US, like Springfield is for the Simpsons.

...I grew up thirtyish miles to the north of NYC (the upper-ish end of Westchester County , which Archie's CO is located in a closer-to-NYC part of) , basically , although they're never completely consistent , I believe Riverdale is somewhere along the line from somewhere in Massacussetts to somewhere in inner Pennylvania , somewhere where NYC or Boston might be an extra-long trade ride away or a jump in a small  personal private  plane .

In one story, Ginger had to stop in "the city" on some business (photographs, I think), and, a moment later, Veronica confirms it as New York City.

So Riverdale seems to be very close to NYC - so close that the gang can just go there on some fashion mag business.

In another story, Veronica's parents (and maybe her) are going to NYC for the evening to attend the opera (or something like that).

Then there's this much older story where Archie asks the gang to accompany him to the New York Stock Exchange to witness him invest a dollar (!!!) and make a lot of money. You don't just get up and go to the New York Stock Exchange, because your buddy asks you to come along, unless you live in VERY close proximity.

Hawaii also has beach and snow (on the mountain tops) and even desert.

Not that that really matters here.  When its summer, it seems like the kids are at the beach in California, since they're often surfing.  In winter, it definitely seems like a small town in the Northeast.  What can you say?  Riverdale is a great place to live; bikinis and surfboards all summer, skiing and lodge-livin' all winter.

California!... knows how to partah.   :D where our mountains have snow and our famous beaches. Has to be in Cal. where the trendy teens are (LOL)...we have a Riverside city and county. I'm thinking of a Riverdale combines the L.A. /San Diego and San Francisco bay areas. There's a Palmdale and a Palm Springs, except Riverdale isn't a desert community.

I've never read those stories Mark is talking about, but I've heard others talk about how close NYC is to Riverdale, and "Life With Archie" definitely confirms a close distance to NYC.

I would take a guess and say Maryland. We have our share of snow plus we have Ocean City Maryland on the Eastern Shore.

You don't just get up and go to the New York Stock Exchange, because your buddy asks you to come along, unless you live in VERY close proximity.

I can confirm this. I was looking through some Digests and this story is in Archie's Double Digest #109. It's called "Sum Fun" and it involves Dilton telling Archie that if you double a dollar every day for a month, you'll be a millionaire. So Archie decides to go to the Stock Exchange. He never mentions the name of the place himself, however they do show the plaque on the front of the building which says "N. Y. Stock Exchange" in the last two panels.

I thought it may have been California myself until I saw all the New York and New Jersey references while looking through some old comics. Then there's the as-of-yet-unsolved debate about Veronica's accent. I know of at least three stories where it's implied she has a Jersey accent (one in which Betty mistakes "Lodge" for "Large", one where all the girls are rapping, and Veronica rhymes "Lodge" with "charge card", and one other one I can't think of at this time).

Hehe. Actually, I just did the calculation. You'll be a millionaire after 20 days. After 30 days, you'll be a billionaire.

I thought it may have been California myself until I saw all the New York and New Jersey references while looking through some old comics.

It's also worth noting that Nick St. Clair was able to drive from "Jersey" to Riverdale on his motorcycle in both the novel "Bad News Boyfriend" and the comic adaptation "Bad Boy Trouble!". This strongly implies New York.

It could also be a Boston Brahmin accent:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Brahmin#Lodge

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Brahmin_accent

Mr. Lodge has just such an accent on "Archie's Weird Mysteries":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkZmndk91sw&feature=related

This fits in with Veronica's early history as a "Boston sub-deb".

We might never know why Veronica was given a southern accent on the old radio show, but it was carried over into the Filmation series and even made it into early episodes of AWM before being dropped. See this clip:

I wish I'd have the ability to double a dollar each day.
