Frank - You're quite the reader! I don't know about an Archie Archive though. I think the majority of the fan base for Archie is the younger crowd.

Look how long it's taken Archie to issue their stories in trade paperbacks. It doesn't help that their digests are their primary vehicle for reprinting their stories.

Maybe it's just my love of the Archie world, but I think a resurgence in interest is happening and an Archive series would be a very profitable choice for the company.  It would serve a need (old collectors) and allow for a more interest in the new material as well.  These are long-term investments in the "brand" and need to take their proper and deserved place amongst the Marvel and DC material (of which, even marginal material is starting to see print).

I think the recent announcement of the old Archie titles on disc will be the best chance we fans get to getting a comprehensive compilation. It wouldn't have been my choice either, but it's better than nothing.

I don't see why that's a bad thing

why this isn't the best situation:

1. It requires the user to have a computer.

2. Some people don't like reading comics on a computer (count me in this group. Given a choice between paper and a computer, I'll take something I can hold any day.)

why this is better than some solutions (i.e. The Marvel Essentials/DC Showcase Presents books)

1. The art will be in color, possibly recolored from the original art

2. It will be very easy for fans to have COMPLETE Archie collections in some kind of chronological order.

3. Storage of said material on CDs is better/less/easier than storing telephone books.

why this is a better solution than the Marvel Masterworks/DC Archives editions:

1. Expense.

What I'd like to see:

A reasonably priced Archie archive edition:strong hardback book, about 100-200 single pages (that would be about 200-400 double sided pages), good paper, good production values, series chronological printing, and no altering of the original product. If Archie Co offered me Archie 1-10 in a hardback (including covers) for $20-$30 with these ideas, I'd snap every one they published in a heartbeat.

I used to enjoy reading the various Harvey titles as a kid (Richy Rich, Little Lotta, Little Dot, etc.). I also enjoyed the ones based on cartoons (Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker...).

You should all check any old issues you have!  The comics (Woody Woodpecker, Super-Goof, Uncle Scrooge, etc) that you purchased in the 3-pack formats became rather... hard to find.. sometime around 1978/79.  In fact, Uncle Scrooge #179 in mint condition will get you upwards of $500-$1200

The other ones (off the top of my head) are Donald Duck #222, Super-Goof #61, Woody-Woodpecker #191.

There's a big list and I actually am trying to collect them all.  There are about 30-40 of these scarcer issues.  The only caveat is that there are rumours that a warehouse find was made last year and some of these are coming into the market.

For example, at one point, there was thought to be only 10-15 copies or so of the Woody-Woodpecker #191 in circulation - well.... I have TWO of them - and I see them on eBay every so often.  So I doubt it.

At any rate, they are worth more than your average comic.  They are all published by Whitman and they have 40cent cover prices (again, from memory)

Any comics that I still have (if I do still have any) would have been purchased in the early to mid 90s...

I've got a bunch of obscure(?) titles that used to belong to my uncles and mom. Mostly horror story comics.

Look at the top corner of the horror titles.... if it says "EC" on them, you may be in for a pleasant surprise.  If not, they they may be the DC or Marvel revival books of the 70's - which are actually not bad, but also not worth a whole lot unless they are in very good condition.

The EC's can be worth a few pennies in almost any shape.

I would have to say Charlie Brown was my very first comic before Garfield, Richie Rich, Little Audrey, Little Dot, Little Lotta and some Pebbles and Bam Bam Comics I had. Of course, the latter ones I read during the time I was introduced to Archie. I remember I was 4 or 5 at the time and Dad bringing down a small box of Charlie Brown books from the top of a bookshelf. I read those things for days, even reading it out loud! Then I got hooked on Archie and well...you know the rest of the story. Wink

I loved reading comics (from the paper), but, I never really collected any like I do with Archie comics. I had a Garfield book or two, and was a long-time fan of For Better or For Worse ... but, for me, it's always been about Archie comics! ^_^
