As an aside on Canada, have any of you read Louis Riel? It came out a few years ago and it was an eye opener into Canada's past. It was very good.

Classic GN.  It's worth reading, but certainly aimed at an older audience.

I've never heard of him/it. Is it an artist or the name of the comic?

He's a historical Canadian figure.  He lead a rebellion and is an important figure in Canadian history.

It's by Chester Brown and published by Drawn and Quarterly. As mentioned by others, it's a more serious work but very interesting, informative and well done.

I didn't realize that it had ended either. I haven't followed it for a few years though because it was getting difficult to keep up with it - loads of sub-plots, and recently they started jumping back and forth between classic strips and new ones, which only added to the confusion.

I bought the hardcover - I can't imagine trying to read this one issue by issue.

On the subject of must-have's - check out the new trade paperback of "Journey".  This series is just so, so good.  It's historical and personal and covers an era of history that matters to all us North Americans.

Speaking of fanfics that close a comic strip this is as good a place as any to mention our very own darkmark's Peanuts story http://darkmark90.tripod.com/PEANUTS.HTM

Like his Last Archie Story, it is one of my favorite fanfics of all time. 'Nuff said. :>)
