"Through Glass" by Stone Sour

Lovely song, with the music video showing how the entertainment industry in LA can be a huge fraud at times. What amazes me to this day, however, is how they actually pulled off the theme quite realistically, even though I know the basic theory of the SFX behind it. That said, if the two guitarists and the bassist are not going to use guitar leads, shouldn't they at least use wireless transmitters for some realism?

* goes into guitar nerd mode *

Oh, for those of you who are curious, the singer (Corey Taylor) and the long-haired guitarist (James/Jim Root) are #8 (the lead vocalist) and #4 (co-guitarist) of Slipknot, respectively. Shocking, eh?

Ah yes... The classic "play electric guitars and use amps in an area where there can't possibly be electricity" scheme. Another great example: "I'm Not Alright" by Sanctus Real - literally shot in the middle of nowhere...

Ummm... It's not the matter of electricity... It's more a case of how the amps are supposed to receive the signal from the guitars...

Cordless guitars, maybe?

Quote: "Ballroom Blitz" by The Sweet. If anyone knows what the story is behind that video, please explain it to me.

I'm pretty sure that someone's just found a bit of video they thought might be vaguely appropriate and stuck the music on. 1973 is too early for bands to be making videos like this. I suppose it could have been some '80s re-issue, but I don't remember it (and I'm speaking as someone who was around for the original release).

Cordless guitars, maybe?

That's what we have wireless transmitters for. You attach the transmitter to the guitar, then it sends the signal to a receiver that is hooked up to the guitar fx and the amps...

Anyway... "Operation Ground & Pound" by DragonForce

Extreme power metal plus really, really cheesy fantasy-inspired lyrics. The video makes me wonder whether the entire music video is part of a video game that the guitarists (Herman Li and Sam Totman) were playing, or if they were only playing the guitar solo duel while on break.

Random DragonForce trivia: the band has been known to get completely smashed on booze while performing live. It's no wonder their songs sound better on their records than played live.

Seems you're right... One of the most recent comments on that video says it's from an 80s British TV show called The Golden Oldie Picture Show.

I've never heard of Hikaru Utada or Ayumi Hamasaki...

She (Hikaru Utada) sang the opening songs, "Simple & Clean" and "Sanctuary" for Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. (Final Fantasy/Disney mash-up game of sorts)

Some of her stranger videos that I particularly like:
"Sakura Drops" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=697xSO2ZlAw (complete with a clear rhino!)
"Traveling" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U0myXslSng (plenty of colors to burn your retinas)

As far as Ayumi Hamasaki, nearly *all* of her videos are strange.
One (my fav.) is entirely animated: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEwweA96_kU
but, I'm not really able to find too many of her videos. Sad

Chiaki Ishikawa - Uninstall:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNCXiMt1bR4

Beautiful song, but the music video is just her in an apartment or studio. So lazy.

At least there were a few (backward) clips here and there to break things up. Again, calling out Hikaru Utada for a very PLAIN video, "Hikari (Shine)" ((same tune as "Simple & Clean" from Kingdom Hearts 1.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WiD7wvTLTc

INCREDIBLY simple... and at about 2:41 she even leaves! 2funny

The 80's had a few odd videos.  Some were "creative" odd and some were just "odd"-odd.

Devo's "Whip It" comes to mind, plus INXS "One Thing",  but I am sure that there are many, many others.  This was during the first year or two of MTV when everyone was trying to figure out the whole music video thing.

Actually - one of the stranger ones was the first video by The Cure - it was Robert Smith (lead singer) in an inflatable children's pool with a plastic baby... a little odd.  However, the song *does* have the line: "I saw you look like a Japanese baby" in it... so maybe it's related to the images.. I couldn't see it. (great band though!)

"Rubbernecker" by Danielson Familie.

Don't know anything about that band, but Tooth & Nail has signed some odd bands over the years (one of the oddest in recent memory is Havalina (aka Havalina Rail Company) - they got dropped from the label for being unmarketable).

While I've heard quite a few songs by The Cure, I don't know that I've ever actually seen any of their videos. Do you happen to know which song that particularly video was for?

I have to try and find the name - the song itself is now stuck in my head!  Smiley

It's from their very, very earliest material (1984-1985ish?)

Wow. Okay, even the first SECONDS of that video look strange! I... can't believe I watched the whole thing without blinking (well, at least, not too much.)

That baby head creeps me out. There's a Kobe restaurant (Japanese food) that I go to that has various masks on the wall, and somehow, I've always managed to be seated under one that looks like the one in the video. It's creepy on the wall in a restaurant, and it's creepy when Robert Smith hurls one around! 2funny
