By the way, how can a decade you didn't live through be overrated?

Just from hearing people talk about it. Personally, I think that the music (ESPECIALLY The Beatles) is vastly overrated, most of the "classic" cartoons (with the exception of "The Flintstones") weren't very funny, the whole hippie thing looks dumb, etc.

Mark,
Like you said in your TRANSFORMERS thread, 60s TV animation was as good as it could be "FOR THE TIME". The budgets were small, and HB did what they could under their budgetary contraints.  TV in general was much more simple and "safe". TV couldn't even show a toilet in those days. Toilet bowl cleaner commercials would use a clear plastic salad bowl to show how the product worked! There were toilet paper commercials...but if you didn't already know what TP was used for...the commercials gave the impression that it was for rubbing against your cheek.  Jane Russell used to do Playtex bra and girdle commercials, but you never saw any ladies WEARING bras or undergarments of any kind. Jane would just talk about how the bra would "lift and seperate", but she never told you WHAT it was that the bra would lift and seperate. And she'd also point to a plastic maniquin which was wearing the product in question.  Bras and panties were a real mystery to the TV watching kid population in the 60s. So compared to when YOU grew up in the wild and wonderful 80s, 60s TV was more simple and safe...and perhaps boring by your standards.

The birth of rock and roll as considered overrated?

Rock and Roll was not born in the 1960s.

Beatles, Stones, Who, Dylan, and all the rest?

I don't like The Beatles or The Who. They do nothing for me.

Who's Dylan?

The Rolling Stones are...okay. That's all.

The Civil Rights Movement? There are ups and downs in every decade but how can you disparage the Civil Rights Movement?

I meant overrated in terms of pop culture.

Do you not like all of the Beatles or just their early work?

All of it.

Bravo, MJB!

It's all a matter of perspective and where you were.  Although the 1980's is my favourite decade ever, it could be because I was born in the early '80's and have such fond childhood memories of that time period.  But, I can see why some people would get sick of it since it seems to be coming back now.  Coincidentally, I admit that I probably wouldn't have liked growing up in the 1970's given my general disdain for polyester and disco music...but to those that grew up during that time period, they'll tell me that there was no better decade out there.

(And, for the record, I LOVE the Beatles!)

If you ask most people these days what they consider to be the origins of rock music as we know it, they won't say Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the like from the 50's, they'll mention the Beatles, the Stones and the music from the 60's.

I think we can solve this easily. What type of music do you consider to be good?

Which would still be wrong.

Heck, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, etc., didn't invent Rock and Roll either. No one knows who did. Here's a quote from Elvis:

"A lot of people seem to think I started this business, but rock 'n' roll was here a long time before I came along. Nobody can sing that kind of music like colored people. Let's face it, I can't sing like Fats Domino can. I know that."

Symphonic Metal (such as stuff by Nightwish)

Style and presentation seem to matter more than lyrical content for me. For example, while I absolutely love "Holding Out For a Hero", I can't stand the similarly-themed "I Will Survive" and "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?".

"80's Ladies with Large Hair and Huge Pipes" - a new genre! :2funny:

I haven't heard Heart in forever! I haven't followed all the links yet, but, I plan to revisit this link so I can listen to them all! I actually like that you included links to all the songs and hope that encourages other folks to post a few links here to their favorite songs as well! Er, possibly in a new post though... :)

LOL!

I haven't heard Heart in forever!

Hehe. Why do I have the feeling that Nancy is into martial arts? Either that, or she's jacked up on something.

I look forward to your thoughts on them!

Not all. I left out links to the Bonnie Tyler songs, since I'd already posted them elsewhere, and I didn't post any Nightwish links.

and hope that encourages other folks to post a few links here to their favorite songs as well! Er, possibly in a new post though... :)

Yeah, that would be best.

Well, from that video alone, I think I counted about 4 kicks! Also, I noticed that her bouncing seems to be contagious! Whenever the other band members got near her, they start to bounce as well. ^_^ Listening to this song though, just opened up a whole can of worms! :2funny:

I didn't know nearly as many words to this song as I did to "These Dreams" and "What About Love", while definitely not as forcefully sung, but, they're the ones I'm more familiar with and I can actually warble along with, but, that didn't stop me from trying to belt out the words (to "Never") as best as I could anyway.

I'm just always going to have a soft spot for 80's music I guess. :smitten: Oddly enough, in the "Related Videos" section, there was a link to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
