ARCHIE COMICS INTRODUCES KEVIN KELLER
« on: April 23, 2010, 03:43:28 PM »
New York, NY (April 22, 2010): Archie Comics, home of the famous Riverdale High students Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead, is about to welcome a new classmate this fall! On September 1st, Kevin Keller, Archie Comics' first openly gay character, will be welcomed into the town of Riverdale.

"The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books," stated Archie Comics Co- CEO, Jon Goldwater.

VERONICA #202 features the full-issue story, "Isn't it Bromantic?" that introduces Kevin, Archie Comics' first openly gay character. Kevin Keller is the new hunk in town and Veronica just has to have him. After Kevin defeats Jughead in a burger eating contest at Pop's Chocklit Shoppe, she desperately latches onto him. Mayhem and hilarity ensue as Kevin desperately attempts to let Veronica down easy and her flirtations only become increasingly persistent.

In addition to the new ongoing achievements at Archie Comics--the #4 iPad book app and most downloaded comics on iTunes, the launch of Stan Lee Comics, Archie's Red Circle superheroes at DC, and exciting new partnerships with Abrams, Dark Horse and IDW--the introduction of Kevin as an openly gay character is part of the commitment to keep Archie properties reflective of the current world of teens and teen media.

Kevin arrives in VERONICA #202's "Isn't it Bromantic?" this September,
in comic shops 9/1/2010 and on newsstands 9/14/2010.

This seems like old news now!  LOL!

But, I am glad to see Archie tackle the subject of homosexuality.  Although some have made it a mission to boycott Archie because of it, rest assured, I am not one of those people.  :)

I saw the article pop up on my news feed and rushed to the board -- this is an interesting development.  I'll wait and see how it goes; handled well, it could be awesome.  Handled badly, it could offend both sides of the debate.

I was reading about this earlier today and I thought it was just a fans hopeful wish, I can't believe it's true. I never thought that Archie would accomplish something like this till the next decade or so.

I applaud Archie comics for doing this, embracing same sex relationships. They are really opening doors of equality to the younger generation.

There's definitely some degree of risk involved in a subject like this one, but I applaud the company6 for taking it in the first place.  I'm sure that when September comes, we'll see the real impact.

This should be quite funny with Jughead's plotting and scheming. As I said in the other topic about this, it'll be interesting to see where the company goes with this.

My guess is there'll be a spike for direct market orders of Veronica #202. I'll be checking the sales charts.

As for overall orders of Veronica (and the other titles), I'm sure that someone can check the statements of ownership.

My guess is the long-term impact will be negligible, both financially and in terms of the company's image.

I mean look at Disney. It's been around 10 years since Michael Eisner gave the approval for Ellen Morgan to be the first gay lead character on an American television series. Remember how the Southern Baptist Convention and other groups boycotted Disney? Did it really hurt them any, long-term? No.

Speaking of which, I honestly expected us to have the first gay Disney Princess (or Princesses, more likely, since there's always a love interest) way before Archie Comics would have even a one-shot gay character, so it looks like Archie Comics surpassed my expectations.

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

I'm a little bit surprised, but it's good to see Archie Comics move into the 21st century.

Has someone at Archie Comics (other than the ones we know stop by here)  been reading this forum?  There was a fairly long thread on both interracial relationships and gay characters a year or so ago.  Now this year Archie dates Valerie and a gay character is introduced.  Coincidence? :)

I think what they were thinking was "Hmmm... the internet thinks Archie is gay. Let's introduce a gay character so we can prove Archie is totally straight!"
But I have a feeling 4chan might start shipping ArchiexKevin, if I know them right.
Man, I sure hope those Anons won't invade this forum for me saying that.

Jon Goldwater took over a year or two ago.  I think since then, the company's been looking at ways they've been criticized and they've decided  to counteract those things.  And each time they counteract something (the staleness of the eternal love triangle, the lack of interracial romance, the lack of gay character) they get loads of press!  It's kind of win-win!

I don't think these decisions are made solely for press attention, though.  Some of it is just the natural course of keeping the property fresh.

As what is expected, many people will react about the new character that will be added to Archie Comics. Kevin Keller will first appear in the September release of the Archie spin-off Veronica titled “Isn’t It Bromantic?” as the hot new guy who beats Jughead in a burger eating contest and becomes the focus of Veronica’s affection. Kevin Keller has something different about him that no Archie Comic character before him has had.  He is gay, that’s right Archie Comics is staying with the times by creating a homosexual character.  It is extraordinarily normal now for a high school student to have gay friends or at least gay classmates, so I guess they really are staying with the times.

:coolsmiley:Interesting that Kevin and Jughead become fast friends and share a heavy interest in food. Some folks in fandom have long thought that Jughead was gay because he didn't want a girlfriend and was long labeled as a "woman hater."

I'm calling that Veronica will say "Nobody rejects Veronica Lodge, so you stop being gay right now!" or something along those lines.

I really see Veronica saying this.
