BETTY COOPER ZOOMS AROUND THE TRACK AGAIN
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:50:45 PM »
AUTO RACING’S  LATEST SENSATIONAL SWEETHEART, BETTY COOPER ZOOMS AROUND THE TRACK AGAIN IN AN ALL-NEW STORY!

In the world of auto racing, nothing has been more exciting and inspiring than the rise of female racecar drivers.  Fearlessly competing against their male counterparts, several female drivers have made their marks in this popular sport.

Not only have these women shown they have what it takes to master what was once a male-dominated sport, but they’ve done so in such a way as to inspire a new breed of racing fan: young girls who want to emulate their cool and-in-control idols!

From pioneers like Janet Guthrie (the first woman to qualify and compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500) and Lyn St. James (the first woman to win the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year award), to today’s top female drivers like Sarah Fisher (the first woman to win pole position in a major North American open-wheel race) and the phenomenally popular Danica Patrick (the first female driver to lead the race at Indianapolis), female auto racers have captured the hearts and imaginations of the nation’s youth, especially young girls.

Longtime readers of Archie Comics know that ever-popular Betty Cooper is fearless in her own right.  This past January, Betty’s interests in sports in general and auto mechanics in particular finally combined for the inevitable: Betty Cooper, racecar driver!  Reaction to the story, “The Fast Track to Success” from ARCHIE #572 was so positive, we had no choice but to bring back the latest auto-racing sensation.

In the story, “Crash Course” from ARCHIE & FRIENDS #112 the saga of radical teen racer Betty Cooper and the Lodge Racing Team pit crew continues!  Fresh from her thrilling victory lap in the pages of ARCHIE #572, Betty once again dons her racing duds and puts the pedal to the metal Danica Patrick style!  Has the makeshift pit crew finally become a well-oiled machine?  Can Betty still out-race the overconfident male drivers?  There’s only one way to find out – race to your nearest comic book dealer and head for the finish as you read this fast-paced tale!  This is one full-throttle sequel that is sure to rev your engine!

Hey, looks great Rik. I loved Archie 572 and this one looks just as fun.

Also Rik, I've browsing your Mighty Crusaders site at http://www.mightycrusaders.net/ and its a blast. I'm collecting and re-editing several of the Mighty Crusaders GCD entries and am trying to buy as many of the 1960s books as I can...

I love the continuity between stories, and I mean real continuity, not just something silly or throwaway.

Also glad the art is by Stan Goldberg. That's not a Goldberg cover, is it? It looks very lazy.

It's signed Ruiz/Smith (look on the grill on Betty's car)... but I'm thinking it's just a quick, preliminary Web cover. Archie 572 also had a preliminary cover that was different than the released cover.

Ah, good catch. It's pretty small but I guess it makes sense. I'm not really a fan of Ruiz but I like him better than Parent. I hope the story makes mention of how they can allow an underage girl to compete though. I don't remember if they addressed it in the first story.

LOL!!!

I was thinking about Betty's age too in Nascar. I'm pretty sure 17 year olds can't compete. But then I figure "Hey, It's Riverdale and anything can happen." When you think about it, mathmatically speaking these characters have been around for 24,090 days and should be experts in a number of fields. That's how Betty is an accomplished seamstress, guitar player, in a band,  ice skater, cook, etc. all at only 17. Archie, Veronica, Jughead and Reggie are the same.

I think someone figured out in the movie "Groundhog Day" Bill Murray became an expert in a number of fields in 10,000 days. The Archie characters should be no less accomplished. :P

Imagine not aging and being able to do anything you wanted to, knowing time wasn't a factor.

Why not?  It's been that way for the Simpson family since their appearances on the Tracy Ullman show in 1987.  Now, they have a movie coming out in a couple of months, and the characters haven't aged a bit!

But, going back to Archie, the tagline for the Archie trading cards stated that Archie was "the only teenager older than Dick Clark", which isn't true technically, since Clark was born over a decade before Archie was created, but oh well. ;)

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about their age at all! I think it's neat that while the characters don't physically age, their skills grow and the world changes around them. This allows the real world to be reflected in Archies without worry of dating the books, etc.

In theory, one can track world culture via Archie comics. :)

Try to do that in Batman or Spider-Man! Ha!

On the other hand, I'd love to see the kids go to college, have careers, get married, etc. Maybe the Archie folks could but out a series dedicated to the adventures  of Archie and the gang as adults.

But then again, maybe not... :)

This cover looks kind of Bob Bolling (especially Betty's face.)

I think eternal youth is part of Riverdale's charm and the fantasy in general. So we get things we can't ever have in the world of Archies.:) (Like Betty GETTING to race in a VERY dangerous and even life-threatening competition in spite of her youth and inexperience, for instance.)

But on the other hand, I think the whole media revolves around teens a bit too much.:P Like the rest of us don't exist at all. (Think manga, BTW.)

By the way, I looked up NASCAR rules and discovered drivers have to be at least 16 (!!!!) to compete. So I guess Betty is OK. :)

Can't image any of my teens (3 all of driving age) driving in NASCAR at 16. EEEEKKKK! I have enough worries with them driving across town.
