  • Biollante: probalby, but 59 percent is considered a "blow out" in political terms, some people are on shaky ground right now, there was evne a conservative pollset that worked for Bush warning people that if Republicans are against things like gay marriage in the near future, they would endure catastrophic losses, I don't know if it's this political cycle, but the paradigm shift already happened a while ago

  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

We can ALL help!
« on: April 20, 2007, 03:54:51 AM »

This Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day. On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. It was a time when cities were buried under their own smog and polluted rivers caught fire. Now Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, grassroots organizations, and citizens like you, what started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment. What are Archie and the Gang doing to protect the environment, reduce climate change and make a difference in pollution?  They are using solutions for saving energy and money at the same time. Archie and the Gang encourage everyone to switch to energy saving CFL light bulbs. At the Archie Comics Offices we are 100% foresent and your home or office could be too. Archie points out, "If everyone would replace just three 60-watt incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs, the pollution savings would be like taking 3.5 million cars off the road" That may sound like an amazingly high number, but when you use less energy at home, you reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and help protect our environment from the risks of global climate change.

Great to hear that Archie Comics is still committed to being as environmentally friendly as possible :)

CFL bulbs are pretty cool, but I don't think my mom likes them (not sure why), and since I'm not the one who buys light bulbs or pays the electric bills, I don't have much say so in the matter. I know my grandparents use them though.

I've changed to CFLs where I can in my place. If you want to help, you could replace the bulbs in your room/area with a CFL bulb. If your Mom doesn't like it in her area, there's nothing you can do about it but you can always take the initiative and get CFLs for yourself.

In Canada, if our government has its way, CFL bulbs will be the only bulbs available for selling by 2012.  They're really pressing for this issue, and I have to say that it's one of the few times that I agree with them.  LOL!

And, I really like Archie Comics commitment to Earth Day.  I remember that the 101st issue of Laugh Digest dedicated the entire issue to Earth Day, and had a really cool cover accompanying it.  And, all those environmental tips that appeared in comics from 1991-1993 were very informative.

Sounds like CFL bulbs would be a great way to save electricity bills as well as the environment!:)

But, won't they give off a cold, white light instead of the pleasantly warm beige color like all old electric bulbs?

It's hardly noticeable actually. Especially if you're used to 100-watt or 3-way bulbs. I believe CFL bulbs are a bit more expensive, but they last longer.

Yes, the cost is offset by how long they last and the light they emit is just as good as a flourescent or regular lightbulb. It's something that people need to adjust to for everybody's benefit.

We use the CFL bulbs as our light source in the back rooms of the cooler and freezer at my workplace.  There really wasn't any difference between a CFL bulb and a standard bulb regarding the issue of light emission.

Quote
Archie Comics was once the poster child for recycled paper in comics; they broke ground in the early ‘90s when they made a bold move 100 percent recycled paper and soy-based inks in all their comics. Although the switch was highly praised, even garnering an invitation to the White House to recognize their efforts, they reversed their paper policy in the late ‘90s after their printer shut down and they selected a new one that offered no such environmentally friendly options.

I stumbled onto this story and it's Archie related so I decided to post it here. I remember when Archie was going to be printed on 100% recycled paper and I thought it still was, but apparently, they no longer are. I thought most comics publishers went to higher grade paper to get better color printing but Archie doesn't really get better when there's computer coloring. I would rather Archie go back to the recycled paper. Any thoughts?

Jim
