While this helps to fade the darkness from Sabrina, another problem arises: even though the original Four Blades have had their memories restored, theyre not being very cooperative! I'm sure I'm biased, but I really enjoy Fernando's artwork!! He has so much going on, the flow and the pictures are just dang fun to look at! And the characters always look like they're having fun, even during the serious moments. He's easily in my top ten Archie artists. I'm really wondering how he'll squeeze in the mandatory Cosmo cameo in the "Barbarian" story... Tongue  Grin

I gotta disagree. Fernando's artwork seems too cartoony to me. Yes, I realize that we're talking about Archie Comics, but other artists such as Jeff Shultz and Craig Boldman make the characters seem more real somehow. Fernando's artwork is like looking at the Archieverse version of cartoon characters.

It's the very cartoonyness I enjoy. Don't get me wrong, Stan, Dan P., Jeff (who does a GREAT DeCarlo riff), Bill G., Bob B., Rex, etc. are all wonderful artists. I can't really think of an Archie artist I didn't like -- even that Elliot guy has potential if he can figure out a wider range of facial features.

But Fernando's art kind of reminds me of Chuck Jones and Harry Lucey in some odd way. Like there's a lot of in jokes going on that the reader isn't aware of. Anyway, I really like it... it's different enough to be unique.

...it reminds me of Samm Schwartz too!

Thanks for the nice comments on my work.

I've always loved  both Harry Lucey and Samm Shwartz.  Their work is definitely stuff I STILL look at to influence my own drawing. The idea of stuff happening in the backgrounds that's totally unrelated to anything else going on in the story is something I took from Samm. According to my editor, Victor Gorelick, Samm was able to letter and ink his own pages so they used to send him a script and they never knew what they were going to get back but they knew it was going to be great!

An interesting story about Harry Lucey that Victor told me and I continue to tell my students every year deals with Harry's notorious dependability. Back in his day, Harry, much like Dan Parent and I do now, would hand his work in in person. He made regular trips to the Archie offices which at that time were in New York city. One day, Harry failed to show up when he was expected. No one heard from him and Victor thought it was very strange that such a reliable guy would just not show up like that. Before the day was over though, Harry showed up with torn pants and bleeding. It seems that on his way to the office, he was hit by a car. Even though he was delayed a little, he still made it into the office to hand in his work!

Now THAT'S a professional!!!
