That is NOT Cedric! I think Dan Parent misplaced his Cedric reference artwork.

"Girls' Night Out" looks to be another typical girls-drop-their-plans-to-be-with-boys story that's getting very tiring.

Here's an idea.  Read the story before throwing your stones.

Reading the Freshman Year story so far, I have to say I'm surprised at how  unlikeable they've made Archie. He's a complete screwup and totally unlikeable. The story is very good but I'm just surprised at how they've approached him. I'm sure they'll clean it up by the end, but I can't see how they can redeem him.

What have they done to him in Freshman Year, exactly?

I love how they are starting to wrap up the Sabrina series. The little orphan in the forest turning out to be queen, Salems  could have been daughter. The history of Vosblanc and that soul stone bit (which I find a bit corny). I cant wait to see how it all ends.  Tongue

Regarding Freshman Year: Specifically from the last issue where they have parent night, all the teachers are complaining about him and parents start thinking that he is the reason why their child might not be doing as well. The thread concerning how he started a party in his house made him seem weak and a pansy.

I've really enjoyed "Freshmen Year", but I have to agree - the sequence where he was portrayed as a "problem" to everyone left me a little cold.

Is he a klutz? - yup!
Accident prone? - yup!
Not the best decision-maker? - yup!

However - he's also:
- a Leader
- well-loved (and not just by B&V)
- part of the community
- kind-hearted

So - having others "concerned" about him seemed to separate him from the community and felt "off".

I can just imagine that people that don't particularly like Archie are hating him a lot more with this depiction.

I just look at it like this.  Archie's in his freshman year, and naturally has to grow and evolve just like all of us have when we were in high school.  Over the years, Archie probably changed a lot into the character we all know today.

Perhaps a trip back to the sophomore and junior years might explain that...if Archie has plans for such a thing.

Agreed, most of the parents and teachers see him that way in this comic, but all the other kids really like Archie. And I think that most parents see their own kids as blameless, and it's "their friends" who get them into trouble and are bad influences. And remember, this is his freshman year, he's not the beloved leader of the kids and stable of the community yet. I think that what we've tried to portray is that Archie is a kid that finds himself in situations way over his head, like with the party. Not much seems to go his way, but who comes into high school fully prepared? Anyway, we definitely wanted to portray him as a little different in his early years, otherwise what's the point?

Bill's look for Dilton int hose panels makes me think that a Harry Potter parody (with Dilton imitatign Harry and using science to simulate magic) would be a natural.

BTW, Bill, I finally got a chance to read all of these in one sitting. You and Batton did a great job of it. Great art and story, wonderful pacing, and an "intro" to the characters and situations that are the back bone of Archie Comics. I could easily see "Freshman Year" being a 12 issue maxi series, with each book as one month of situation comedy and drama. Then of course I'd want three more 12 issue maxi series, each one following a years' of the gang's lives.

A lofty idea no doubt... again, great work!

With Dilton, Batton did a sketch in his rough storyboards that showed Dilton with bangs, which fit perfectly with what I was trying to do with the characters. He does look a bit like Harry, although he's much shorter! He also has a bit of a crush on Betty too.
