Riverdale High novels
« on: August 28, 2008, 02:25:49 AM »
With all the talk of the "New Look" stories, I realized there's been very little discussion on the Riverdale High novel series from the early 90s, which the New Look stories adapt. They were written by Michael J. Pellowski, who still writes for Archie Comics, and had occasional interior illustrations by Stan Goldberg. What made them unique was that they were intended as teen romance novels, targeted at young adults and therefore featured less slapstick-y humor and were more focused on character development. The characters come off as more realistic and more grounded. If you loved the Betty's Diary stories, these are almost the exact same thing, only they're about 150 pages instead of six.

There were ten volumes in the series:

1. The Trouble With Candy
2. Bad News Boyfriend (this is what "Bad Boy Trouble" is based on)
3. One Last Date With Archie
4. It's First Love, Jughead Jones ("The Matchmakers")
5. The Big Breakup ("Breakup Blues")
6. Rich Girls Don't Have to Worry
7. Class Clown
8. My Father the Enemy
9. Is That Arabella?
10. Goodbye Millions

There was also a double-length summer special that included two full-sized novels in one - "Tour Troubles", featuring the Archies, and "Betty Cooper, Baseball Star", featuring Betty, naturally.

So let's discuss! Which stories were your favorites? Least favorites?

The only two I ever read were #3 and 4, as I was only about 6 or 7 when they came out. "One Last Date With Archie" is great, one of the best Archie stories I've ever read in any medium; "It's First Love, Jughead Jones" is... meh.

I've read #1, 2, 5, 10, and the Summer Special so far (I don't have all of them yet). I'm currently in the process of reading #4.

My thoughts:

1. The Trouble With Candy - nice story. It feels like a Betty's Diary story.

2. Bad News Boyfriend - nice story also. I'm currently (slowly) writing a review of this before I review "Bad Boy Trouble".

4. It's First Love, Jughead Jones - So far, I'm not into it. Maybe because, even though it's written from Betty's POV, it's all about Jughead (my least-favorite character), and the girls are so bugsh*t insistent that he needs a girlfriend.

5. The Big Breakup - a bit better than #4. However, again, the girls are so insistent that Midge and Moose need to get back together. Leave them alone and mind your own business, girls.

10. Goodbye Millions - This is an okay story, but it's written from Veronica's POV. She doesn't have a good narrative voice, because she's very spoiled and, because we're reading her thoughts, we know that she's that way for real (not just for show), and she finds absolutely nothing wrong with it.

"Tour Troubles" is good. It's written from Archie's POV, but they got rid of his clumsiness and womanizing, so he's a lot more relatable.

"Betty Cooper, Baseball Star" is nice. I wish they'd adapt it into a comic.

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

I've only read #2.  And, when B&V Double Digests #151-154 came out, I liked seeing the illustrated counterpart to the story. :)

I remember reading two of them, #3 and #6, but my memories of them are kind of vague and I don't even have the books any more.  I thought it was an interesting concept, but personally I preferred seeing Archie and the gang in the regular comics format.  Otherwise they were too much like "Babysitters Club"-type novels that I never much cared for: too much teenage psychodrama.

Back when I was in the third grade, all the girls really were into the Babysitters Club books.  I read one just for kicks, and I was bored to tears.  LOL!

By 4th grade, all the girls were over the BSC too.  They had started watching "Beverly Hills 90210". :2funny:

I've got all 10 books but haven't read all of them yet. I have read #2 (just as Bad News Boyfriend was being serialized)#3 which I thought was a great story as well, #4 (currently being serialized in Jughead's DD as "The Matchmakers"),  #5 (which is going to be serialized soon in Archie's PNG DD -- the story where Moose and Midge break up), #7 (where Reggie takes center stage) and The Archies in "Tour trouble."

There's a lot of tension in the 4th novel that didn't get translated at all in "the Matchmakers". everyone really believed these changes in Jughead were real, but that seemed missing or forced in the comic story. I didn't believe it as a reader and I should have. I'm looking forward to the Moose & Midge story and hope they serialize the Reggie story as well. The odd thing about most of these books is that except for #3 and "Tour troubles" Archie is really a minor character.

Next on my list is the Veronica/ Betty switch ("Rich Girls have it easy"), the Veronica vs Mr. Lodge story ("My father, the enemy") and "Goodbye Millions."

Sshhhhhh!!! :2funny:

I remember reading the ads for the books way-back-when too, acf, but, I never got them either. I like that the stories are being revisited in the digests, and they've sparked a new interest for me in finding them!

the Veronica vs Mr. Lodge story ("My father, the enemy") Gregg

This one sounds intriguing: can anyone give a synopsis?

Mr. Lodge is tearing down some Riverdale landmark (a park?) to build something on, and Veronica protests against it and gets the gang to support her.

I got complete synopses of these books on the wiki: http://wiki.archiefans.com/Riverdale_High. I've also included cover scans.
