  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Biollante: ok so shouldn't Joe Quesada know that? lol  It made him look a bit stupid imo.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

Hello all (and by all - I am sort of referring to some of the older readers)  - not to exclude younger readers, but this topic is about....

Underground Comics!

As a broad collector of comics (a "Panelogist" if you will :)  ) - I collect many different comics:  from Archie to Zap.  Recently, I picked-up an underground comix price guide and was surprised to see an Archie spoof in the back pages.  It is very adult in nature and features Veronica as a Vampire (of sorts...).  Additionally, I have the MAD Archive 2-volume set from some years back and it has an Archie spoof (Starchie) in it.

My question (and point of the thread) is - let's list any Archie parodies or spoofs we come across.

To respect the fact we have all ages here - maybe we can refrain from "detailed" descriptions, but I would certainly like to see what is out there.

The Price Guide I have is simply called "Underground Comix Price Guide" - it has a lady covered in comix on the front cover.  The Mad Archives are from DC.
No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.

To begin with, there was that "Starchie" parody in an old, comic-era issue of MAD.  Then Harvey Kurtzman did "Goodman Meets Pl*yb*y", iirc, which was a pretty dark parody featuring the Archie gang as adults.  Roy Thomas and Jim Mooney did "Arch and the Teen-Stalk" in NOT BRAND ECHH #9.  And there was a brief MAD HOUSE bit featuring "Starchie".  That's all I can remember right now.

"Vampironica" was a notorious Archie parody that ran in the first printing of the X-rated Cherry Poptart #1 in 1982.  Archie's lawyers didn't like it, and it vanished from the second printing.

That's why the recent Archie version of Vampironica was pretty unexpected.  :)

Cherry Poptart also caught flak from Kellogg's, as you can imagine, and later became Cherry.

The book/price guide is:

Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide and reprints Vampironica

Starchie is from Mad #12 and reprinted in Mad Archives Vol 2

"Goodman Goes Pl*yb*y" appeared in Help! #13 (1962). The story is in the public domain because although Archie Comics sued and won the copyright for the story, they let it lapse.

There was a magazine I picked up many years ago, kind of like how Mad magazine and Cracked are, I think it's out of print now, maybe due to poor sales. There was a parody of Archie Comics in there. I want to give a description of the story in case someone else remembers but it is quite adult in nature. Without giving out too much details I will say Archie is with Moose's girl and Moose gets angry and does a drive by on both Archie and Jughead.

It's called "Nuts" and it was a great magazine while it lasted.:)

And yes, I saw that parody comic, too. BTW, the word "condom" has been mentioned a few times, too! (No porn is involved, though.)

One thing I don't like about Archie is they seem to like bullying other companies and people with unjustified legal threats.  Parody has been protected by the first ammendment for quite some time I think.  I also believe that Vampironica was the author's reaction to him being harassed by Archie previously for just having similar looking character designs (but not that similar at all, which is why it is insane).  Dan DeCarlo also feared drawing characters in his usual style after they fired him for the same insane reasons.

I also don't think the comic changed its name to Cherry becuase of Kellogg's, although those kind of fears may have factored into it.

A more recent issue of MAD made fun of Archie's recent wedding series. It had Archie marrying Jughead and then cheating on Jug with Moose....rather odd. I have the issue if anyone wants a scan. :)

Sounds pretty hilarious.  Wouldn't mind seeing that. Please do the scans.  XD  Although not a completely off the wall idea.  I read a few official stories that definitely made me wonder about them.  Strangely it was more the older ones than the newer ones.  XD  I'm also curious to see how Moose ends up playing for the other team.  lol
