Speaking of cats, do any of you remember Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse? It was such a blatant copy of Batman and Robin. I think the only time I saw it was in school when it rained and we couldn't go out for recess. They stuck us in an auditorium and ran cartoon reels. I don't think I ever saw it on tv though.

Sadly, I was also one of those kids who used to plan their tv watching. I loved getting the tv guide each week and I actually used to clip the advertisements for the shows I like (that had pictures).
In fact, I still remember one time seeing a listing for the Captain America movie at 1 in the morning on a weekend. I stayed up to watch it but started nodding off. I eventually saw it and loved it but that tv guide was dangerous!

I haven't seen Oz in many years but I used to have a library session in grammar school and the librarian would alert us to specials that were airing that week or that day. Oz was always one of the ones she talked about so of course I watched it. I liked it a lot as a kid but don't know how I'd feel about it today. I still like the flying monkeys.

I really want to get the Woody Woodpecker DVDs as well as the Popeye. Like Tom & Jerry, I remember being able to expect a good or stupendous cartoon based on the opening credits (meaning the animators and such).
I vaguely remember Laurel and Hardy cartoons but I was more of an Abbott & Costello fan.
MJB and Gregg listed quite a few shows I haven't heard of before. I remember one of the things I looked forward to were the new comic advertisements listing the lineups for the various channels around September. I'd go through and see what I'd watch and what would have to be dropped if it conflicted with a favorite show on another channel. And does anyone remember when the networks had a preview on prime time? This might have been in the 80's only.

I really disliked the culture of the time that they tried to display in a positive light. Remember that I saw this close to 15 years ago, so I'm basing it on what I recall. I don't mind long movies but when it's bad, it's especially bad. I saw it in a theater in one of those re-releases so I was a bit disgruntled when it went into intermission. I think I may have disliked all the characters.

Have you seen The Day the Earth Stood Still? Not the new one, but the original. I remember seeing it a few years ago and really thinking it was a great movie. When I saw the trailer for the new one, I really had to wonder why there was a need to redo it. Sure, the effects will look nice but the original is still very good.
In terms of the effects, I really do think that it's gotten to the point where the special effects are very ho hum these days. It's reached a level where effects that would have blown people away 20 years ago are standard now and it's nothing special anymore. Seeing the Transformers was cooler than I expected. Seeing Superman Returns was pretty cool too. But a lot of the effects are just that now. I liked it when we'd watch a movie and wonder how in the world they were able to do it. Now it's just usually just a green screen.
I haven't seen Citizen Kane either yet but it's on my list of movies to see. I also want to see The Third Man. I've been burned on some "classics" though, like Gone with the Wind. How I hate that movie!!!

Before cable made cartoons available in all time periods, catching a cartoon was precious! Like MJB, I loved pretty much all the superhero type cartoons - I didn't even notice those old Marvel cartoons barely moved! I just loved watching a Marvel cartoon.
And I haven't watched Scooby Doo in ages, but I still remember my favorite was the series where they teamed up with "stars". I especially loved the Batman and Robin teamups but interestingly enough, the series brought a lot of cultural icons into my view.
And I don't know how many of you will remember this, but I loved seeing Abbot and Costello. I was a big fan of the movies so I was shocked when I found the cartoon. It was on irregularly so I didn't get to see much of them.
I remember getting home from school and basically watching cartoons until 5 when the sitcom reruns would start. Those were the days!

I was hoping to add some more issues but it was a busy weekend and I only had a chance to sort through my remaining digests. If you're interested in any of them, post or IM me. For those of you who have listed the ones you want, we can finalize things this week if you're ready.

Not sure what Tales of Adventure is. But I'm also open to trading for regular books if anyone wants to get rid of books. I'm currently in the mood for some Haruki Murakami or if anyone has Netherland, I'd be glad to make a trade.
