I decided to pick up BETTY AND VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST MAGAZINE #150 after work on Wednesday, April 11, so here's my review of it. Yes, I'm reviewing the entire issue, so get something to drink and prepare to read something really long.

The front cover shows photos of Betty and Veronica, a Riverdale High School varsity letter (whose?), a flower, a smiley face, a butterfly, and a locket (whose?) with Archie's picture in it. "150th Issue!" is proclaimed, and the text at the top mentions "Betty & Veronica's Friendship Scrapbook". That's actually what got me to pick up the issue. The cover is by Dan Parent.

Betty and Veronica's Scrapbook
by Dan Parent
Character(s): Betty and Veronica
12 pages

This isn't a story. It's meant to be Betty and Veronica's scrapbook, giving some details about the girls' history.

I got the title from the fact that, on page 1, Betty and Veronica hold up a book with the title of "Betty and Veronica's Scrapbook". It's dumb that the registered trademark symbol is on their own scrapbook, though. Come on, Archie Comics, couldn't you have withheld that in this case?

Betty and Veronica present their scrapbook to the readers on page 1. As a personal rule (which I use for my Betty Cooper FAQ), stories in which the characters are aware that they're fictional characters aren't canon. That means, to me, none of the information in this story can be trusted.

There are some dumb items that Betty and Veronica saved throughout the years, which I won't get into here. I'm going to focus on the history of the girls as presented here.

There are pictures of Betty and Veronica as babies. There are also pictures of themselves as little kids. They actually call themselves "Little Betty" and "Little Veronica".

Betty and Veronica first met when they were in their "Little" stages - or slightly older (they met Archie around that time, too). So much for that one cover that I saw years ago, where Betty and Veronica were lying next to each other in the hospital's nursery.

There are pictures of Betty and Veronica fighting over Archie (who took this?!) and making up.

There's a picture of Veronica in a pretty dress with the text: "Becoming a Fashion Plate!" Meanwhile, Betty's picture has "Happy in T-shirt and Jeans!"

The core 5 are at Veronica's fancy 7th birthday party somewhere. Veronica also had a fancy invitation sent out. For Betty's fancy birthday party, Betty, Veronica, and Archie celebrate at Pop's.

For their first dance at junior high, there was a coin toss to see who would get to go with Archie. Betty won. Veronica went with Reggie, but Reggie stared at himself in the mirror for a while. He did dance with Veronica, though.

One of Betty's honor roll report cards (from 8th grade) is included. She had Math, Science, Geography, Spanish, Health, Home Ec., and Gym (the last subject was obscured, but this is my guess based on Veronica's report card, which otherwise matches Betty's precisely). Betty got an A or A- in every subject for every quarter. Veronica was too embarassed by her own report card, so she covered it with a photo of herself.

Betty responds by including a photo of herself, wearing an ensemble that she made herself.

They started playing together as The Archies when they started high school.

They met new friends: Brigitte Reilly, Chuck and Nancy,...

The scrapbook is interrupted by a "Learn To Draw Veronica" page (oh, come on! why here of all places?!) and a "TMNT: The Video Game" ad.

...and Ginger Lopez. There's also a mention of Maria Rodriguez being thrilled when Frankie Valdez moved back to Riverdale (no mention of when Betty and Veronica met either, though).

There's a picture of a young Jellybean (though not at her birth as the text suggests), who is "a lot cuter than that brother of hers" (with a picture of Jughead sticking out his tongue).

There's mention of a "dark" period when Cheryl Blossom moved back (no mention of her first time there). The "Love Showdown" logo is partially seen, and it's mentioned that Betty and Veronica almost lost Archie for good, got him back, and still don't trust Cheryl (the stories where they hang out together apparently didn't happen).

Betty and Veronica then list other boyfriends that have "filled in" for Archie - Adam, Reggie, and Jason Blossom - but they "always go back to that lovable klutz".

There's a picture of Veronica introducing Betty to The Veronicas (is it from the issue of "Veronica" that introduced them?) as well as their album cover.

There's some text from Betty and Veronica in quotes, which is confusing. Are they supposed to be saying those things to the readers at that point? If so, then why is the text in the scrapbook? I think I might have an explanation for this. You see,...nah, they just screwed up.

The next text reads "And now, here we are, getting ready to go out into the world!" The included photos are Betty reading a physics book and Veronica filling out a college application online. This means that Betty and Veronica are high school seniors.

They wonder what the future will hold for them.

They praise their families (pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Lodge, Mr. and Mrs. Cooper, and "Chick" and Polly are included) and friends (a picture of Ethel, Moose, Archie, Midge, Brigitte, Dilton, and Jughead is included).

A pair of scissors is shown on the scrapbook, which makes no sense, if they're currently showing the scrapbook to us.

Of course, Betty and Veronica don't know which one of them will end up with Archie.

This was pretty enjoyable, but Betty and Veronica's histories seem a bit too simplified.

This isn't a story either. It's 4 pages of Betty and Veronica modeling clothes. They share the 1st and 4th pages. Page 2 is devoted to Betty ("sugar & spice"), and page 3 is devoted to Veronica ("rich girl").

"Vengeance Is Whose?"

Veronica calls Betty to clean the air between them regarding Archie and begin a whole new chapter in their lives. Betty is suspicious. Veronica tells Betty to come over to Archie's to see what she set up. Betty walks over, thinking what Veronica set up for her date with Archie. As it turns out, Veronica came by to say Betty had sent her to cancel her date with Archie, then Veronica offered to take Betty's place, and Archie agreed. This infuriates Betty. The next day, at school, Veronica tells Betty that, by starting a new chapter, she meant a new chapter in the battle over Archie. This further angers Betty. Betty then casually tells Veronica to watch her back. When Veronica goes on a date with Archie to the movies, Veronica is jumpy, despite Archie saying that Betty is on a date with Adam tonight across town. After a few more dates, Archie gets annoyed with Veronica's behavior and walks off. At school, Archie tells Betty what happened, but Betty doesn't tell Archie the reason for it. Jughead notes that Betty is ahead in "the Archie Date Wars" and asks her strategy. Betty replies that she just lets Veronica worry, saying, sometimes, the best revenge is none at all. Jughead agrees. An angry Veronica stares at Betty while walking by.

This is a cute new story. Betty subtley gets revenge on Veronica through fear. Notable moments are Betty's temper tantrum outside the Andrews' house and Betty's facial expression to Veronica at school on the next day. One thing that confuses me is the final panel. Why was Veronica angry? Was it because of Betty's threat, or did Veronica overhear Betty's conversation with Jughead? If it's the latter, then Betty shouldn't have been talking about it in the school hallway. Her revenge would be ruined.

Archie and Veronica are at...Veronica's house, I guess. It's raining outside. Archie's upset that their date is ruined. Veronica is furious and uses her dad's big computer to find a sunny beach. She and Archie fly down to the Gulf of Mexico in a plane, despite Archie saying they could have watched TV. When they're at the beach, Archie isn't that enthusiastic but says it's just like Riverdale in August. The following week, Archie and Betty are at...Betty's house, I guess, for a date, when it's raining again. Archie apologizes, but Betty says it's great and asks if the ferries are still running to Plum Island. Archie says yeah, not as many as in the summer, but a couple. Betty grabs an umbrella. Archie drives Betty to the dock in his Jalopy with Betty holding the umbrella over them. The ticket guy says they can leave for Plum Island whenever they want, because they'll be the only ones on the ferry. On the ferry, Archie says it's like having their own private yacht. The ferry guy invites them to the bridge for a cup of coffee with the captain. When they reach Plum Island, Archie says it's like they're the only two people in the world. They go to the Snack Bar, where Myrt, the proprietor, serves them (or at least Archie) a bowl of hot chowder. Archie and Betty sit and stare out the window at the rain falling on the water and the beach without people. They're filled with wonder. When they leave and go back to the ship, we learn that it was Betty's first time having a dance floor all to herself and a private jukebox. It was the best date that Archie ever had in his life. Betty says she'll love rain as long as she lives. Betty asks Archie if he did anything special with Veronica on their date. Archie says no, because they went where everybody else was and did what everybody else did, but his date with Betty was a date to remember. As they ride in Archie's Jalopy, the rain ends, and the sun comes out.

This story really is wonderful. It's the kind of story that I really love. I just have a few comments. There are minimal captions in this story, but they aren't from Betty's perspective, just a narrator's. This is an older story. There's Archie's Jalopy. Veronica uses a rotary phone. The slang is outdated. So are the clothes. I would guess 1970s or 1980s. Probably 1970s, judging by Betty's bellbottom pants. It's a nice touch that Betty uses the umbrella in Archie's Jalopy. The roof won't go up.

"The Right Moves"

Betty came over to Veronica's house to hang out with Veronica, but she spends her time with Mr. Lodge, playing chess. Mr. Lodge beat her twice, but it wasn't easy. Mr. Lodge offers her a third chance to beat him. Betty accepts but then, at Veronica's interruption, Betty excuses herself. Veronica insults chess, but Betty tells her to be careful, because it's her dad's favorite game. Veronica doesn't understand Betty's interest in chess. Betty says she likes the challenge, and it's a learning experience for her. Veronica says it's boring. Betty accuses Veronica of being jealous of her, because Veronica isn't good at it, and Mr. Lodge prefers to play with Betty. Veronica says Betty's off base and that the game just bores her. Betty gives up and leaves. Veronica admits to herself that Betty is right and wants her father to talk about her in the same glowing terms that he refers to Betty in. The next day, at school, Veronica talks (and hugs) Dilton into coming over and teaching her chess on that afternoon. That same evening, Betty is over at Veronica's house. Mr. Lodge has the chess board all set up for a game with Betty, but Veronica interrupts and plays a game with Mr. Lodge. She beats him. Mr. Lodge is surprised but says he's proud of her for learning such a complicated game. Betty challenges Veronica to a game. Veronica confidently accepts. Betty beats her in under seven moves, fives times in a row. Veronica is confused. Betty says Veronica's win was just beginner's luck, and Veronica's just reverted back to the same lousy player that she's always been. Veronica angrily throws Betty out the door. Betty, dazed and aching all over, jokes that Veronica won't be joining chess club anytime too soon.

This is a cute story. There's not much to it, but it's fun.

Scent Of 2 Women!

Midge, Betty, and Veronica are walking along a sidewalk. Midge notices a scent on Betty and asks what it is. Betty says it's just something that she whipped up; it's been in her family for years. Midge says it's divine. Veronica says she thought someone was burning leaves. Midge says that's not nice. Veronica apologizes but is angry that no one noticed her $500-per-ounce perfume. Midge says Betty's fragrance is unique, because it's interesting. Veronica is upset again when Archie comes by and notices Betty's aroma. Veronica punches Archie, who lands in a bush. Later, two frangrance experts are working on a special scent for Veronica. Veronica isn't pleased and demands that it be stronger and more powerful. Unfortunately, when Veronica tries out "Eau De Veronica" on the street, it's too powerful for Betty and Midge. They compliment her, despite the fact that their eyes are watering. After prodding from Veronica for the truth, Betty and Midge tell Veronica what they really think. Veronica is insulted. Her perfume makes a young boy sick, and he runs to his mother. Veronica decides to go back to the drawing board. Betty giggles. Back at Lodge Labs, Veronica has the experts duplicate the sample of Betty's frangrance that she obtained. Soon, at Pop's, Betty and Midge love the scent. Veronica says it's the new "Eau De Veronica", but Betty says it smells suspiciously like her own scent. Veronica says it's a "kooky coincidence" but then says, since it's not patented, Betty doesn't have a leg to stand on. Betty is shocked. Veronica says she'll be launching her new scent at Bixby's Department Store on Saturday and says to be there, scratching herself as she leaves. At Bixby's, Veronica has a table with her perfume set up. Archie says he can't believe Veronica ripped off Betty's scent. Betty says there's not much that she can do about it and says sometimes there's no justice. Archie notices blotches on Veronica's face, and Veronica realizes that's why she's scratching so badly ever since she put on this perfume: she's allergic to it. Veronica cries. Betty says sometimes there is justice after all.

This is a nice story, but it feels unresolved. Does Veronica go through with selling the perfume or not? Does/Did she patent it or not? Also, for all of the captions used for time lapses, there's nothing to indicate a time/scene change to Bixby's on Saturday.

"The Long Goodbye"

Betty's over at Veronica's house, but Veronica hurriedly shoves Betty out the door, saying Betty must need to get home due to the time, and says she'll see her tomorrow. Outside, Betty believes that her "dear friend" Veronica was trying to get rid of her. Betty's not ready to go home just yet, especially since Archie is due here any minute, so she goes back into Veronica's house through another entrance and helps herself to a magazine. When Veronica demands to knows what Betty's still doing here, Betty says she's bored and eagerly asks her "best friend in the whole world" to help her beat her boredom by watching T.V., playing billiards, or swimming in Veronica's indoor pool. Veronica throws Betty out the door, and Betty lands on her butt. Betty goes back into Veronica's house and watches TV. She tells Veronica that Veronica gets only 215 channels and suggests that Veronica complain. Veronica says Betty's overstaying her welcome and yells at her to go away. Betty runs away. Archie arrives. When Veronica shows Archie in, they find Betty playing billiards. Veronica says she told her to go home. Betty says Veronica told her to go away. Betty figured anywhere else in the house was okay, and it's not her fault that Veronica walked into the same room that she was in. Veronica throws Betty out the door, head first. When Veronica comes back to Archie, she finds Jughead watching TV. Archie says Gaston let him in. Jughead informs Veronica that she gets only 215 channels. Veronica throws Jughead out the door. Jughead says Veronica doesn't know how to treat a friend. Betty agrees and suggests they go back inside and show her how. The final bubble reads "End...maybe..."

I hate this story. Betty is completely rude to her supposed "best friend" Veronica. Not only that, but Betty is also repeatedly commiting a crime: trespassing. Veronica should have called the police and had Betty arrested. Betty's behavior was inexcusable.

Archie comes by Betty's house and sees her leaning against her mailbox with a letter in her hand. He asks what's wrong. She says another magazine rejected her story and that she's collected over a dozen rejection slips. He tells her to not feel bad, because Reggie has received hundreds - not from magazine editors, from girls that he tried to date on the Internet.

There's not much to say here. It's a cute gag.

There's a 1-page maze where you have to get Veronica through jogging obstacles and back into her nice, warm bed, because she's beat.

"Fair Exchange"

Character(s): Betty and Veronica

Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Reggie are at the "Riverdale State Fair"(???). Mr. Lodge's company is a corporate sponsor of the fair, so Veronica has lots of free tickets. Archie wants to go on rides all day. Reggie wants them to play some games first to win some prizes for the girls. Reggie wants to show up Archie, so the girls will go on all of the rides with him (Reggie). Reggie chooses games that Archie isn't good at and wins a giant stuffed panda for Veronica and a giant teddy bear for Betty. Archie is a klutz during both games and even gets the girls wet during the first one, angering them. When they go on the rides, Betty and Veronica are afraid to leave their bears unattended, because someone might take them. Archie says Reggie will have to pass on the rides and watch them. Reggie is shocked. Betty tells Archie that that wouldn't be fair. Reggie is relieved and thanks Betty. Veronica decides to use some of her extra tickets to have Reggie ride with the two bears in a separate car, and Archie rides with Betty and Veronica. Archie reminds Reggie that they have lots of rides to go on. Reggie tells Archie to shut up.

This is an okay story. It's nothing special. I don't like how Archie, being a klutz, gets rewarded, and Reggie, getting some nice presents for the girls, gets punished.

There's a 1-page activity called Hobby Frenzy!! where you have to unscramble the letters of each word to find the names of Betty's favorite hobbies: 1. cooking, 2. aerobics, 3. writing, 4. kissing Archie. I'm confused over the appearance of an object that says "Reebok" on it. It doesn't seem to go with any of the hobbies.

Reggie and Betty are walking along a sidewalk when they come to a movie theater. Reggie suggests they take in a movie. Betty agrees, saying Reggie can go in this one, and she'll take in the one across the street.

This story, as short as it is, is still confusing. The most obvious question that I have to ask is: Riverdale has 2 movie theaters - and across the street from each other at that? Besides that, there are 2 movie posters behind Reggie and Betty. The one closer to the door that Reggie's pointing at has the words "Horror of" in the title, but it also says "Next Week". The other poster (closer to Betty) is a Western called, I believe, "Gunslinger From Cheyenne", and it's "Now Playing". Both posters are on the same building. Are they meant to be the movies that Reggie and Betty, respectively, want to see? Am I missing something here?

"Stargazer" Parts One and Two

Betty and Veronica are at Veronica's house. Betty likes Classy Cola, a new product of Mr. Lodge's new soda company. Unfortunately, the sales are fizzing. Betty spots "America's ultimate babe", Blondonna, on TV. She's every guy's "dreamy date"(?), including Archie's. Supposedly, she's dated "over 100 Hollywood hunks"(?!) and broken every one of their hearts. Blondonna Barnes (and her agent, Mr. Starmaker) just happens to be in the mansion. She's gonna be the new spokesperson for Classy Cola in an attempt to boost sales. The girls are excited (to say the least) to meet her. Blondonna will be staying with the Lodges to hide out from the public. Blondonna gets the girls to take her shopping where no one will recognize her (of course, Veronica chooses the Riverdale Mall, because it's "always so crowded") tomorrow. Blondonna makes a personal phone call. The next day, the trio go to the mall. Blondonna is wearing some of Veronica's clothes to disguise herself. While the trio chat (Blondonna reveals that her wild styles and heartbreaker reputation are just part of her Rock image), they're followed by a figure in a trenchcoat and hat. Blondonna decides to go shopping by herself for a while. Betty spots the figure following Blondonna. Betty and Veronica go after them but lose them. Betty says the "guy" looked suspicious. Veronica agrees and says he's also familiar, but she can't remember where she saw him. Later, Blondonna meets up with the girls. Veronica wonders to herself where Blondonna's packages from shopping are. Betty informs Blondonna about the "strange guy". Blondonna asks what guy. At Veronica's house, Veronica expresses her concerns about Blondonna to Mr. Lodge. Mr. Lodge also has concerns about her - specifically, her wild image. He wants Classy Cola to be a refreshing drink for the entire family, not just a fad drink for young fun seekers. Blondonna comes in and asks Mr. Lodge for permission to take a stroll around the estate. Mr. Lodge grants it. When Blondonna leaves the room, Veronica endorses Blondonna to Mr. Lodge. Mr. Lodge leaves the room. Betty spots the guy outside through a window. Veronica runs to tell Mr. Lodge to get Smithers to alert the police. Minutes later, Betty, Veronica, Mr. Lodge, and Smithers run outside. It's nighttime, and there's a full moon. Mr. Lodge has a golf club, and Smithers has a rolling pin and a flashlight. The police are on their way. The foursome find Blondonna and the guy. Smithers shines the flashlight on them. Veronica recognizes the guy as Zack Evans, who, Betty exposits, is the lead guitarist in Blondonna's band. Zack and Blondonna are secretly married and make arrangements to secretly meet each other sometimes. No one is supposed to know, because Mr. Starmaker thinks it'll be bad for her career. Veronica, Betty, and Mr. Lodge suggest Blondonna tell everyone. Zack agrees. Blondonna asks about Mr. Starmaker. Mr. Lodge says he'll handle him and adds that Blondonna has a long-term deal with Classy Cola. Two months later, Betty, Mr. Lodge, and Veronica watch Blondonna and Zack's commercial. They tie their love of Classy Cola to their love of each other and Rock and Roll. Mr. Lodge says that commercial boosted sales. Betty says Blondonna's fans adore her new image and that her latest release, "Rockin' Wedding Vows", is number one. Mr. Lodge is glad that everything worked out, but he guesses a lot of guys are heartbroken now that Blondonna's married. Veronica and Betty get an image of a heartbroken Archie in their minds, say that's okay with them, and slap five.

This is a pretty good story. I predicted that the mysterious figure wasn't a bad guy from his first appearance, but I still enjoyed finding out exactly who he is. I have to wonder, though, how Betty knew that he was a guy, and how Veronica found him familiar, if his face was in the shadows until near the end of the story.

Betty is reading a book on how to find inner peace and tranquility. She tells her mom that petty things are not going to bother her anymore. Veronica calls and asks what Betty's going to wear to the dance tonight. Betty bought a new dress and has to pick it up. She'll stop by and show it to Veronica. On her way to the dress shop, Betty knocked over by a runaway dog and its owner. Her hair, which she'd just washed and set, is ruined. The boy apologizes, but then Betty takes responsibility for it. Betty gets the dress but then is splashed with water by a passing car. Betty takes responsibility for it. She arrives at Veronica's house and shows the dress to her. Veronica says it's tacky, suggests Betty get her money back, and suggests she wear another dress. Betty asks Veronica what she (Veronica) is going to wear. Veronica says she hasn't given it any thought and leaves the room. Betty notices the exact same dress hanging on a door. Betty leaves Veronica's house angry but says she'll remain calm. When she arrives home, her mother informs her that Archie's mother called and said he was sick, so he won't be able to take Betty to the dance. Betty excuses herself, goes in the backyard, and stomps on her book and screams.

This is an okay story. The extremes of Betty brushing off things that would genuinely upset anyone and then taking out her pent-up rage on a book was kind of amusing.

Veronica is riding in a car with a guy named Marty. He stops for gas. Veronica offers to pay, since he drove her to the mall. Marty refuses to accept her money and buys $3.00 worth of gas. Veronica thinks that Marty is new in town but has old-fashioned ideas about money. Marty and Veronica say they like each other, but Marty says Veronica's wealth ends up getting them special treatment. The gas station attendant then recognizes Veronica and offers to wash Marty's window. Marty drops Veronica off at home, and they decide to have a picnic at a nearby lake tomorrow. Veronica wants to have her chef prepare stuff, but Marty decides to make some stuff and suggests Veronica make some peanut butter sandwiches. Veronica goes inside and writes in her diary, liking the idea of Marty refusing to let her pay for anything. The next day, Marty arrives on his bike. His car broke down, and he doesn't have enough money to get it fixed just yet. Veronica says they'll take her sports car. Marty asks if they could cycle. Veronica agrees. At the lake, Marty suggests they picnic on an island. Veronica agrees and wants to rent a boat. Marty still has two dollars and decides to rent an old canoe. They paddle to the lake. Veronica agrees that it was a good deal. When they sit down to eat, Marty is happy that, for once, Veronica being the richest girl in town will have nothing to do with how much fun that they have. Veronica agrees but then thinks she better not tell Marty that her dad owns this island.

This is a very nice story. Veronica seems perfectly reasonable here. Except for being rich, she seems like Betty - even writing in a diary and having an orange cat.

"Just Be Yourself"

Betty is at the laundromat, doing laundry. An ad guy spots her and offers her a role in a TV commercial. He gives the script to her to take home and study. Later, at home, Betty is looking at herself in a mirror and trying out different voices. Her dad walks in the front door and tells her to just be herself. The next day, at 8:00 AM, they film the commercial for "Blast" Detergent. They do 26 takes, but Betty keeps messing up her lines. Betty sits down and says "It's no use! I can't do this!" The cameraman asks the ad guy if he should stop taping. The ad guy is surprised that the camera's still rolling and tells him to keep on taping. He tells Betty that they can use the tape of her that they've already shot. Betty exclaims "Really?! That's terrific! Great! I can't believe it!" A few weeks later, Betty bursts into her house and tells her parents that her commercial will be on in a few minutes. The commercial goes as follows: Betty: "It's no use! I can't do this!" Ad guy: "Don't be discouraged! I'll wash those clothes in new 'Blast'! Now! What do you think of your laundry?" Betty: "Terrific! Great! I can't believe it!" Betty's dad says that was some really good acting. Betty says he was right, hugs him, and says "All I had to do was be myself!"

This is a nice story. It kind of feels like a Betty's Diary story. Betty got to be on TV. I'm confused about the first take of the commercial, though. Betty didn't screw up her lines - at least not that we saw.

"Surprised Party"

Betty and Veronica are at Veronica's house. Veronica finds a recipe for lemon meringue pie in a magazine and decides to bake one for Archie as a surprise. After some bantering, Veronica goes to the store for ingredients, and Betty goes with her. On the way, they meet Archie, and Veronica warns Betty to be careful of what she says. Betty accidentally lets Archie know. Archie finds it humorous rather than nice, so Veronica yells at both of them. Betty keeps accidentally blabbing more details to Archie. Veronica goes to the store alone. Archie figures out that Veronica is baking a pie for him, which shocks Betty(?!). Later, at Veronica's house, Veronica ruins the pie. Archie and Betty arrive. Archie asks where his pie is. Veronica says it's really for Betty and throws the pie in Betty's face.

This story is kind of cute. It's an older story (maybe from the 1950s or 1960s), judging by the artwork. Betty is particularly dense and loose-lipped here, though.

"Poor Little Rich Girl"
by Unknown
Character(s): Betty and Veronica
6 pages

Betty and Veronica are at Veronica's house. Veronica tells Betty that she shouldn't be envious of her, because money can't buy happiness. If you take away all of her things, she's a girl just like Betty. Betty keeps pointing out that Veronica still has Archie. Mr. Lodge comes into Veronica's bedroom and asks her to mail an urgent letter for him. Before she leaves, she tells Betty to try on her new sheath (dress). Betty tries it on, looks at herself in Veronica's full-length mirror, and thinks she'd give her "eye teeth"(???) to change places with Veronica. Betty bumps into a footstool and falls over on her head. Betty thinks up a scheme of pretending to have amnesia, looking in Veronica's bag, and finding that she's Veronica Lodge. Betty goes downstairs. Veronica arrives with Archie, who she ran into. Betty says she fell on her head and declares that she's Veronica Lodge. Archie points out the real Veronica. Betty shoves the "impostor" out of the house (Archie goes with Veronica). Veronica believes Betty's story, but Archie just wants Veronica to get her dad to throw Betty out. Veronica says it might make Betty's condition worse and wants to warn her dad to play along. Betty overhears this and grins. Mr. Lodge has his doubts, because "There's nothing smarter than a dumb blonde". Betty calls her "old pal" Reggie to gloat about what she's done and says that Veronica is his. Mr. Lodge overhears this and decides to teach Betty a lesson. He makes Betty wear work clothes and do a lot of chores, giving the impression that, when Veronica's friends aren't around, Veronica does the housework, so Mr. Lodge can make money by not paying servants. Betty escapes out of a window and runs away, much to Mr. Lodge's glee. Betty runs over to Archie and Veronica and gives Archie to Veronica, telling Archie to take care of "this poor little girl" and telling Veronica that she won't try to get Archie anymore. This leaves Veronica and Archie confused. Later, Reggie runs up to the "evil genius" and asks where the "ex-heiress" is, so he can get a date. Betty beats up Reggie and walks away. Reggie says the money went to her head fast.

Betty is a complete creep in this story. I wanted to call her something else. She's selfish. She's criminal. As Veronica said in the previous story, Betty is "the nastiest best friend a girl ever had for a best friend". The two stories seem to be from the same era, too, judging by the artwork. Even if Betty did do something so mean, her mistake was gloating about it on the phone. Apparently, Reggie is her "old pal", which means that they're two of a kind. I love the lesson that Mr. Lodge teaches Betty, but I gotta say he's generous for not calling the police and having Betty arrested. And why does Betty beat up Reggie at the end? It wasn't his idea. She brought all of this upon herself. Betty Cooper, man; nobody messes with her - not even Chuck Norris. My final comment is that this story ends the love triangle. Yes, ends it. Betty gave up. Veronica won. If it wasn't for the fact that each story is set in its own little universe, the writers would have a tough time trying to re-establish the love triangle - not that they need to, of course; the stories are better without it.

There is then a 1-page "Classic Veronica" puzzle where you put the ovals in numerical order to find out why Veronica is always on the phone with boys: "Because she's a real operator!"

"Target Tactics"
by Unknown
Character(s): Veronica
1 page

Reggie has a dartboard set up outside with girls' names on it. Reggie suggests Archie let the dartboard decide who will be his date tonight. That way, Archie gives "all the girls in town" a chance. Veronica says that's a coincidence, because she was just about to suggest the same thing. According to her, why should she monopolize all of Archie's affection? She wants Archie to throw the dart at her target, though, which has fewer girls' names and a much larger area for Veronica's name. This surprises Archie and Reggie.

There's not much to this story. It's cute. It seems to be from the same era as the previous two, judging by the artwork. Apparently, going by Reggie's dartboard, there are only around a dozen girls in town. It's also interesting that Veronica makes Betty the bullseye on her dartboard.

"I Spy, You Spy"

Character(s): Betty and Veronica

Betty and Veronica are at Betty's house, watching a romantic movie in Betty's bedroom. Betty leaves to get more popcorn for them. Veronica sees Betty's diary unlocked and reads it. She finds it hilarious. Betty returns and is angry but holds off on doing anything. After the movie, Betty invites Veronica over to watch the sequel tomorrow night. After Veronica leaves, Betty musters up a little creative writing. The next night, during the movie, Betty leaves for more popcorn. Veronica sneaks another peek in "the saga of Betty Cooper". Veronica reads an elaborate story about Betty being a foreign spy and wanting to bring Archie back to the homeland. Betty is standing outside and cracking up. Veronica excuses herself and goes to warn Archie. After Betty calls Archie, Archie fills in his parents, and Betty calls the Lodges. Veronica arrives at Archie's house and asks for Archie. His dad says he's off somewhere in a hurry with Betty. After Veronica leaves, Mr. Andrews feels guilty, but Mrs. Andrews says Mr. Lodge wants to teach her a lesson. Veronica goes home to get her parents' help, but Smithers says they're off with Betty and Archie. Veronica freaks out and believes she's "a victim of Agent Betty Cooper". Mr. Lodge, Archie, and Betty come out of the next room, busting Veronica. Veronica excuses herself to go to bed, but Mr. Lodge asks her if this little adventure teaches her something about invading others' privacy. Veronica says yes: if you're going to snoop in someone's diary, make sure that the door is closed. This worries Betty.

This is a cute story, but I find it hard to believe that Veronica, who, according to herself, has known Betty since they were little kids, could fall for such a ridiculous story.

"Trivial Pursuit!"
by Unknown
Character(s): Betty and Veronica
5 pages

Veronica and Archie are at Veronica's house. Veronica can't go for a ride in the country with him today, because her dad wants her to entertain one of his client's children. Archie is immediately jealous, but Veronica angrily says it's a girl. Archie is immediately in love and decides to help. They go inside, and Archie finds out it's just a kid named Megan Stewart. Megan is rude to Veronica and Archie. Mr. Lodge reminds Veronica to take Megan somewhere. Veronica forces Archie to come along, threatening to see less of him and more of Reggie. Veronica has Archie drive over to Betty's house. Veronica dumps Megan there. Betty makes brownies, and then they play the home version of the TV game show, "Top Trivia". It's a board game. Betty and Megan have a great time. At 5:00 PM, Betty takes Megan back to the Lodge estate. Megan says her dad will love to meet somebody that plays "Top Trivia" as good as she (Megan) does. It turns out that Megan's dad is the producer of "Top Trivia" on TV. He gives his card to Betty and tells her to stop by the studio tomorrow to arrange the details. When Veronica and Archie return, Veronica is shocked to learn that Betty will be on TV. When Betty and Megan leave, Mr. Lodge suggests that he and Veronica watch "Top Trivia" on TV.

This is a cute story. Betty does seem to be better with kids than Veronica is. Other board games that Betty has are Parcheesi, Monopoly, and Checkers.

"It's My Party!"

Character(s): Betty and Veronica

On Friday, Betty's parents are leaving to go to a lake for their anniversary for the weekend. Alice is worried about leaving Betty alone and suggests that she stay with her (Betty's) grandmother, but Betty would rather stay at home and have Veronica over. Veronica immediately calls and gets confirmation that Betty's parents have left. Veronica comes right over to arrange a party, because "Every teenager has a party while their parents are out of town". Moose, Midge, Judhead, and Reggie (and perhaps Archie) are some of the guests. Betty's mom calls to say they're coming back tomorrow morning instead of Sunday night, because it's not quite as peaceful as they remember there. After the party, it's after midnight, and Betty's house is trashed. Veronica calls a bunch of businesses and has Betty's house fixed by morning. Betty's parents arrive and believe that Betty repainted the living room and got new furniture for their anniversary. Betty goes along with that.

This is a cute story. It's amazing what Veronica can do with money, and it's nice that Betty didn't tell the truth to her parents and went along with the cover-up.

"The Hobby"
by Unknown
Character(s): Betty
5 pages

Betty is writing in her diary about a fun assignment that she has right now for the school paper. She interviews classmates about their hobbies. Veronica collects shopping bags from different department stores. Reggie collects cameras - and photos of himself that he takes. Jughead collects soda cans. Chuck draws cartoons of the people that he knows, which Betty didn't know(?!). Archie collects banks, finds $15 in one, and treats Betty to a movie to celebrate his good fortune. That brings Betty to her hobby: going on dates with Archie.

This is a nice story. It's a Betty's Diary story, so of course it's nice. There's more to the others' hobbies but nothing that adds to the main story. I just wish Betty was given a real hobby, though.

Here's Harvie!
by Unknown
Character(s): Archie
5 pages

Veronica and Archie are at Veronica's house. Archie spills the chips, so Veronica calls in Harvie to vacuum them up. Harvie is a prototype for a robot that does household chores that Mr. Lodge is considering investing in. Unfortunately, Harvie obeys voice commands, whether they're intentional or not and whether they're the correct word or not, and creates a big mess, largely due to Archie. Mr. Lodge is angry. The next day, Archie arrives at Veronica's house again. Mr. Lodge had Harvie reprogrammed to eject Archie from the property whenever it sees him.

There's not much to this story. It's an Archie story, which I don't care for. Also, I find it hard to believe that Veronica knows the acronym for Harvie and that Harvie can be commanded to break something into a million pieces.

"Fairy Tales Do Come True"

Character(s): Betty and Veronica

Betty has come along with Veronica for the weekend to help her open their cabin for the new (Winter) season. Unfortunately, Veronica has Betty do all of the cleaning (such as the fireplace) while Veronica calls and orders the food supplies. Lance (the grocery delivery guy) invites Veronica to a dance at the village hall. Veronica leaves to get a few things. A "fairy godmomma" appears. Betty asks if she dozed off, and this is a dream. The fairy godmomma tells her not to get nosy. She gives Betty "a classy set of threads" and a motorcycle to drive to the dance on. After driving like a lunatic, Betty arrives at the dance, only to find out that it's a square dance, and she's not dressed properly. Betty runs away, embarrassed. While she's driving back to the cabin, cursing the "yahoo", her motorcycle and clothes disappear, causing Betty to land on her butt. Betty goes back to the cabin and continues to clean the fireplace. The fairy godmomma refuses to take the blame. Betty hopes it's a dream, because she can't take much more of her.

Okay, so is it a dream or not? We never find out. Also, Betty indicates that the clothes and motorcycle disappeared, because the fairy godmomma is "touchy" (due to Betty's insult), but the fairy godmomma earlier warned Betty to "be back by Twelve". What's the real cause? Oh, who cares? It's just a silly Cinderalla spoof.

"It's the Pits"
by George Gladir
Character(s): Archie & Friends
1 page

Betty, Archie, and Veronica are at the Grand Canyon, talking about how it's bottomless but that that word doesn't do it justice. Jughead, who's eating at a nearby picnic table, tells them to stop talking about his stomach.

This is just a short gag. Nothing to it, really. It's also new.

"Grin and Bear It!"
by Unknown
Character(s): Betty
6 pages

Betty tries on an "I Love Teddy Bears" T-shirt. She find it nerdy, but her mom says she should wear it, because her (Betty's) Aunt Helen, who's coming for a visit, gave it to her. Betty agrees to wear it for Aunt Helen, but that's it. Alice tells Betty to wait out front. Archie, Veronica, Reggie, and Jughead show up in Archie's car. They invite Betty to come with them to Pop's and a movie. Betty has to decline. Veronica gives the guys the idea that Betty feels strongly about teddy bears, so they all bombard Betty with gifts of teddy bears tomorrow. Betty figures out that it's due to her T-shirt. Alice says Betty can't say anything, because it might hurt their feelings. Days later, Betty is still receiving teddy bears - even from a total stranger. Betty even gets an original custom-made Betty teddy from her friends in the mail. Eventually, Mr. Cooper decides to put the bears into storage. Archie calls and sets up a date with Betty for Saturday morning at Nine. He wants to show her something. It turns out to be the world's largest teddy bear on display for the "Toys Plus" grand opening. Unfortunately, the wind has the (apparently light) teddy bear fly through the air and land on Betty. The next day, Archie, Veronica, and Jughead come over to see Betty (who's just a little shaken up but fine). Betty made the newspaper: "Local Girl Squashed By Bear". Jughead asks what happened to all of Betty's teddy bears. Alice uses the accident as an excuse to say that Betty was traumatized. Betty plays along and says she never wants to see one of those furry creatures again. After her friends leave, Betty slaps her mom five. Betty says "I guess someone up there just wanted to make my life a little more bear-able!" Alice cringes at the pun.

This story is really loony. Why should Betty wear a dumb shirt for her aunt? Why is Betty prohibited from telling her friends the truth? Why did Betty stuff the bears in a closet instead of putting them in storage earlier? Finally, why did Betty go along with Alice's idea? Betty should have let the bears keep coming, put them in storage temporarily, sold them, and deposited the money into her bank account.

Character(s): Archie & Friends
1 page

Ethel, Jughead, Betty, and Archie are on a picnic. Ethel keeps telling Jughead that she's in the mood for various romantic things and then asks what he says. Jughead says don't be so moody, which surprises her but amuses Betty and Archie.

This is another short gag. Whatever.

There is then a "Learn To Draw Betty" page.

"Procrastination Elimination"
by Unknown
Character(s): Betty
5 pages

Betty is writing in her diary about procrastination (which she'd kept putting off). Many things have piled up that Betty's put off doing, so she decides to do them. She returns all of the things that she's borrowed, paints her room, and cleans her closet. Archie shows up. Betty rejects his offer of seeing a movie to finish cleaning out her closet and do mending. Archie says he'll call her later in the week. 2 days later, Betty has accomplished a lot and decides to take a little break and spend some time with Archie. For the next week, though, Archie's busy catching up on stuff that he put off, following Betty's example. When Betty realizes Archie hasn't asked her for a date in a week, she goes over to his house and accuses him of being a big procrastinator. Betty gets him to go to a movie. Archie says "We won't be teenagers forever!" Betty concludes that she has to remember not to put off being a teen-ager.

This, being a Betty's Diary story, is naturally nice. It's also cute that Archie says they won't be teenagers forever. Betty's conclusion is confusing, though. She hadn't been putting off being a teenager. Archie had. Betty had taken a break.

"Liar Liar"

Character(s): Betty and Veronica
5 pages

Veronica picks Betty up for some "back at school" shopping (Betty hadn't gone during the Summer, because she was afraid that she'd get depressed by being reminded so much that Summer was almost over). After some banter, they arrive at the mall. A new brand of sneakers is out, which Betty finds cool, but she gets the store brand, supposedly because she likes them better. Veronica detects Betty's fib and buys a pair of the new sneakers. Veronica finds an "affordable" fake leopard trimmed jacket, but Betty buys a plain one, supposedly because it matches her wardrobe. Veronica detects the fib and buys the leopard jacket. Betty gets new "chea - uh...cuter" jeans, too, despite Veronica's suggestion of buying them at another store. Veronica tells Betty to meet her outside the other store. The last item on Betty's list is socks. Veronica mentions that she just saw "some real darling pairs" at a store, but Betty says her mom wants her to get plain white ones, supposedly so Betty will always have a matched set in the case that the washer eats one. Veronica is surprised at them being done so soon. Betty says she's run out of money. Veronica says she's not done yet and is going to buy a few tops and skirts. Betty goes to catch the bus home. When Betty gets home, Alice is surprised. Betty explains: "When you don't have much to spend, it doesn't take long!" Betty wishes she was so rich that she wouldn't have to fib about buying cheap things. Just then, the doorbell rings. Betty has a delivery of 3 boxes. They're the clothes that Veronica bought. According to the note that came with them, it's supposedly because Veronica found out that they won't fit in her closet. Betty, crying, puts on some of the clothes, looks at a photo of Veronica (it's signed "Love Ron") on the mantle, and thinks that she (Betty) isn't the only fibber in town.

This is a lovely story. It feels like a Betty's Diary story. Humor isn't the main focus here. Making you think is. I love these kinds of stories.

"A Night At the Opera"

Character(s): Betty and Veronica

Veronica runs to Mr. Lodge and begs him to get her a ticket to the ballet, because a hunky ballet dancer named Randolph Suidrigalouskavich will be performing. Mr. Lodge says he and Mrs. Lodge already reserved box seats. Veronica wants to sit on the main level with her friends, because only old foggies with opera glasses sit in the box. Mr. Lodge pushes away his opera glasses and says he'll get a general admission ticket for her. The evening of the concert, Veronica leaves early to get a good seat, because they're first come, first serve. An hour later, Archie, Reggie, and Betty show up to pick up Veronica. Mr. Lodge says she left to get good seats. Reggie says she had the right idea, and Betty suggests they go now and maybe get lucky. Mr. Lodge offers to let them sit in the box. They accept. At the concert, Betty asks Archie if he sees Veronica anyhere down there. Archie says no and tries the opera glasses.

This is a cute story. There's a bit more banter that I didn't comment on, but you get the general idea.

"Let's Veg Out"

Veronica has come all of the way downtown at Betty's insistance. Betty has almost finished Riverdale's costume for the annual farm parade. Betty will be the head carrot, but she needs someone that's her size to wear it while she fits it. Veronica tries to run away, but Betty drags her back. Veronica puts on the carrot costume, and Betty fits it, but the zipper gets stuck. The fire alarm rings. Betty refuses to cut Veronica out of the costume after all of this work. They run out of the parade headquarters. With neither of them having their car there, people stare at Veronica. They go to a bus. Veronica gets on, but Betty doesn't make it. It's the express bus, so Veronica has to endure laughs and jokes for 65 blocks. The bus drops her off in the exclusive section of town. Veronica is further made fun of - including by the girls from the country club. Veronica encounters a police officer and gets help. At the police station, Mr. Lodge gives a diamond ring to Veronica to make up for her ordeal. Veronica asks how many karats. Betty and the officer don't find that funny.

This is a silly story. Betty isn't exactly a friend to Veronica here. She gets Veronica to come downtown without telling her why, forces her to put on a stupid costume, and refuses to cut her out of it. I have to admire Veronica for not slapping Betty.

Wedded Blitz
by Kathleen Webb
Character(s): Betty
5 pages

Betty is writing in her diary about going to her cousin Marie's wedding today. She had wished that it was Archie and her up there instead. Betty writes about everybody making such a fuss over you at showers and parties, lots of lovely presents, and the new diamond ring that you get to flash around. Archie interrupts Betty's daydream. They're at Pop's. Archie asks about Betty's dress. Betty explains and adds that she caught the bouquet. Archie asks when Betty's getting married. Betty tries to get Archie to ask her now as a long-term engagement until after she graduates from college, but Archie is happy only that Betty is considering higher education. Archie adds that he's definitely going to college. As Archie and Betty dance to "The Locomotion" on the jukebox, Betty keeps prodding him about his plans after college. Archie says he'll get a job to support his family, but he says there's still lots of time for him to decide who that he'll marry. Betty teases him that the girl that he dreams of marrying might have met somebody else by then and suggests that he get his bid in for her now, before it's too late, just to be sure. When Veronica walks into Pop's, Archie asks Veronica to go steady, and Veronica agrees. Betty furiously tells Archie that she wouldn't marry him if he was the last man on Earth - not even if he asks her. Betty then dumps a bowl of pistachio ice cream on Archie's head and storms out of Pop's. Archie blames Betty for not making herself clear in the first place.

This story originally appeared in Betty's Diary #28 (9/89). I know this is a Betty's Diary story, but it makes Betty seem rather shallow. Her private thoughts reveal that she cares about attention, presents, and a diamond ring. Also, I'm confused about something. I get that Betty's flashing back to her thoughts during her cousin's wedding while she's sitting in Pop's, but it doesn't show her actually writing in her diary at Pop's. Finally, this story ends the love triangle - again.

WaLk The WaLk

Reggie, Archie, Betty, and Veronica are watching a fashion show on TV in Veronica's living room. Reggie and Archie are drooling over the models' walking style, angering Betty and Veronica. Veronica turns off the T.V., and the four of them argue for a while. Veronica then orders the boys to leave. Veronica suggests that she and Betty go to a charm school to learn to walk like models. Betty agrees. Days later, at Ms. Kitty's School of Charm, Veronica and Betty learn how to walk like models. On Monday, at school, Veronica and Betty wow Archie and Reggie with their walking style. The bell rings. Mr. Weatherbee arrives and tells them to get to class. Reggie and Archie run. Betty and Veronica walk like models to class. Mr. Weatherbee tells them to speed up, if they want to avoid detention. Betty and Veronica run. The bell rings again.

Okay, there isn't exactly much to this story, and it's kind of weird. It's okay, though. It's also new.

Well, this double digest certainly has a variety of stories. They cover the spectrum from bad to great. I'm glad that the vast majority of the stories are devoted to Betty and/or Veronica, and, even in those that aren't, at least one of them still appears. Out of this double digest's 169 story pages (23 pages are devoted to ads), 161 pages are devoted to Betty and/or Veronica, making for 95.26627218934911242603550295858%. That's a heck of a lot better than the 98 of 179 story pages of Betty and Veronica Double Digest Magazine #65 (6/97), which is 54.748603351955307262569832402235%. A vast improvement.

I doubt that I'll review many digests and double digests in full. I'll probably review just the new stories.

This issue is pretty enjoyable. Recommended.

I thought that the first few pages of #150 were incredibly well done, and I liked the layout very much.  Come to think of it, a lot of the "collectors issues" have really surprised me, like in Tales From Riverdale #1, where the first quarter of the book was done like a yearbook.

Definitely a must-have for all Archie collectors...and one book closer to the new debut of Betty and Veronica in issue #151.

Just 2 weeks to go!
