  • Biollante: probalby, but 59 percent is considered a "blow out" in political terms, some people are on shaky ground right now, there was evne a conservative pollset that worked for Bush warning people that if Republicans are against things like gay marriage in the near future, they would endure catastrophic losses, I don't know if it's this political cycle, but the paradigm shift already happened a while ago

  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Biollante: ok so shouldn't Joe Quesada know that? lol  It made him look a bit stupid imo.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

Although the Spire Christian Comics haven't been published in digest format...at least not to my knowledge.  Though some of the stories certainly LOOK like they might have...

How so?

There's one story that I have in an old Christmas digest from the 1980's where Archie and Jughead happen to run into an African-American child who is trying to raise money to buy his "brother" a gift, or something like that.  Archie and Jughead help.  When the kid introduces his brother to Archie and Jughead, they are shocked to find that he's caucasian.  The kids then explain that they are ALL brothers and sisters, and the story concludes with them reading the Bible.

If that doesn't sound like a Spire Christian tale, I don't know what does.  I DO know that Al Hartley did draw the tale.

Many of Hartley's Spire comics were based on his "regular" Archie stories. Before he started the Spire line, he was trying to bring Christian content into the mainstream comics, and said in the early '70s that he was trying to make sure that a certain percentage of his stories had Christian messages. (Sort of like not all the Spire stories are religious/moral, some are comedy stories.) When the Archie editors asked him to cut down on the religious stuff, he took the characters to Spire. But before that, he had all kinds of non-secular moments. This is not from Spire, this is from an actual Archie newsstand comic:

Thanks for the additional info, addisonian.  I think I've seen those types of stories being reprinted a lot between 1979 and 1984 digests.

I had those digests too - in fact, those late '70s and early '80s digests are where I did most of my early Archie reading (and they are still my favorite digests for the huge range of material they reprinted). When I found out about the Spires it seemed like deja vu because I'd seen similar Hartley stuff already, but with better inking.

One thing that I found really weird was when Hartley would prosletyze in Sabrina stories. And he did a lot of Sabrina's story, including a couple of "Sabrina's Christmas Magic" issues. But you have to have chutzpah to use a Satanic witch to preach Christian messages.

Yes.  I have that Sabrina story myself.  I usually don't associate witches with Christmas myself, but somehow, Al made it work...LOL!

You'll note that the evil witch is rubbing Santa's knee in that last panel...trying to tempt the Christmas icon to the dark side?

Or maybe it's just drawn poorly.  :)
