  • Biollante: probalby, but 59 percent is considered a "blow out" in political terms, some people are on shaky ground right now, there was evne a conservative pollset that worked for Bush warning people that if Republicans are against things like gay marriage in the near future, they would endure catastrophic losses, I don't know if it's this political cycle, but the paradigm shift already happened a while ago

  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Biollante: ok so shouldn't Joe Quesada know that? lol  It made him look a bit stupid imo.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

  • Biollante: Joe Quesada was drawing Thor on some Disney promo, and he drew him flying with his hammer on his side, now I'm not a Thor junkie, but isn't that actualy inaccurate, doesn't he fly by being dragged by his hammer???

Jughead's Double Digest #160
« on: May 25, 2010, 03:20:38 AM »
Just got this, and have read about halfway through. Figured I'd give the reviews a try:

"The Saga of Bullseye Jones" (cover story)- it's pretty amusing as far as modern Archie tales go, and gains points for the rarely-seen "Jughead & Chuck" duo in a Wild West-themed strip. Jughead of course is the laziest sherrif ever, but stuff seems to work out for them.

"Treehouse Trouble" features some REALLY spastic and bizarre hyper-kinetic art by Tim Kennedy (I don't recogize the name, but he seems like a newcomer). It's arguably the most off-model Archie characters I've ever seen, but it almost kinda works in a slapstick kind of way. Not sure I'd like to see anyone but Arch & Jug in this style, though.

"Double Trouble" Oh My Gaawwwwddd.. it's Jinx Malloy! In a modern strip! Holy cats! So bizarre! What's bizarre about this one is that he doesn't even SAY anything- he's just in various background scenes as Jug tries to avoid him after falling into numerous slapstick situations because of Jinx' "Aura of Destruction". Then things get REALLY crazy, as the bad luck effect brings both Ethel and TRULA TWYST (my favourite background character ever) into the mix, as Jug hides out during a dance (that is secretly staffed by Jinx, of course). What's wierd here is that Trula is depicted by a totally different artist that all her other appearances (I believe her creator does all the work on her), but appears to just have a straight-up unwanted crush (Lena Hyena/Big Ethel-style) on "Juggers" instead of her usual "manipulative sociopath" schtick. They take turns dancing with Jug, tiring him out, and then MORE bad things befall poor Jughead. Very weird story, but nice to see two very under-utilized background characters.

"Observations of a Soda Shoppe Owner"- a Samm Schwartz-drawn strip with some cute notes by Pop Tate. Seeing Arch, Jug & Reg sharing a single soda when they're not '"flush with money" is classic.

"Hippo Hijinx"- Very wierdly-drawn strip involving an escaped hippo that Arch & Jug try to take care off. Very off-model shots of Jughead here, and hippos are notably much more dangerous and volatile than the friendly critter seen in this one.

"Mixed Signals"- I'm sure I've read this one before. The boys lose their baseball "manager's signals" book before a big game against the girls, and go through pains to memorize new ones. A predictable ending. Do the girls EVER lose when they play the boys? I know they're fighting sexism, but the poor boys are running like 0-100 against them by this point :).

"Spin Machine"- Hey, it's that Segarini pizza chef! I've seen him in only one other Jughead Digest. He's some rival of Pop's, and they fight over Jughead and business in general. Pops hating on pizza is always funny, for some reason.

"Mind Games"- Arch (vs) Reg at golf, and Reg starts to psyche out Archie. Jughead of course is the MASTER of such games (unless a certain Jug-obsessed manipulative sociopath is involved), and Reg gets owned.

"Wrestlemania"- Know I've seen this one before. Jughead is apparently a master wrestler here after learning some moves in the Rec program when he was a kid. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work in real life- you'd forget all that stuff, and he'd certainly be no match for Big Moose. Seeing some blatantly chimp-like wrestlers on the team is pretty funny, especially since one is actually doing an ape-walk.

"The Happy Accident"- Another I've seen before (I once stopped collecting Digests for about ten years after a five-year run of them had started producing entire Digests full of these), where Weatherbee blames all mishaps on Jughead, and is usually right. Very old style (it's got the classic buck-tooth look on Weatherbee & Grundy).

"The Look Alikes"- Bizarre story where some gigantic Moose-like guy is dating Ron, and is planning on beating up Archie because he's a rival. Jug plays the classic mind-games on him. This guy looks like he's 35, though, which I'm sure wasn't the artist's intent.

That's all I've read for now. More later
