*shakes head*
I don't know what Dan Parent was thinking when he wrote this. For a new person reading Archie for the first time it would be OK but the very first story threw out all credibility. The whole comic is about Betty and Veronica camping...a great subject with plenty of comedic potential, as Betty likes to "rough it" and Veronica doesn't. Dan follows some good ideas here and generally does all right.
In the first story, Betty and Veronica go camping Betty-style. Veronica agrees, but when they get to the camp ground there's no electricity, running water, an indoor bathroom or a mall nearby. Just what you expect from camping... especially from two friends who've been camping numerous times before. BUT....
Veronica is surprised by the lack of amenities. Totally surprised. Like she's-never-camped-before surprised. Like she-doesn't-have-a-clue surprised. Veronica is much smarter than that, and it totally threw me out of the story. I would expect that from someone who's lived in a city all her life and led a totally pampered life, but that's not Ronnie. This would be good in TV sitcom, but missed the mark for the Archie characters.
The rest of the comic was ok, but never really recovered from that moment. Dan Parent can do better work but he missed the ball on this turn at bat. Better luck next time. I give that story 2 out 5 stars, the rest of the book gets 3 out of 5 stars.
