  • Biollante: probalby, but 59 percent is considered a "blow out" in political terms, some people are on shaky ground right now, there was evne a conservative pollset that worked for Bush warning people that if Republicans are against things like gay marriage in the near future, they would endure catastrophic losses, I don't know if it's this political cycle, but the paradigm shift already happened a while ago

Now that I have a readable issue -- the first copy I bought had two misprinted stories in it-- I can do a review. All art ably done by Stan Goldberg and John Lowe. I only have 1 question/complaint about the artwork. Why does every character have to have 1-2 lines going across their faces and meeting at the top portion of their nose when they are facing the audiences? I know adding those lines during the drawing helps determine the facial features and their proper place, but they really distract from the final art. That is my only complaint art-wise.

First story is "A Study Of Studying" by George Gladir. Betty is trying to concentrate on her studies, but her classes keep reminding her of Archie. Its a cute story with a funny ending.

2nd story is "Everything Is Beautiful" by Kathleen Webb. An optimistic Betty tries to overcome all of the horrible obstacles that keep her from enjoying her school day. It's one of those "everything that can go wrong will" kind of stories. In the end her optimism wins out, but only just barely. Another fun story by Kathleen.

3rd story is "Dressing Downer" by Mike Pellowski. Betty goes through her wardrobe trying to decide what fashion statement to make to the freshmen at Riverdale. There's good reasons for each outfit, but only 1 makes her stand out... until an accident on the way to school tarnishes her carefully crafted image. Another fun story.

Finally in "Sales Help" -also by Mike Pellowski- Betty gets a job as a sales associate in a variety store. 3 times she tries to help people in the story and three times her kindness is pushed aside due to misunderstandings. Not a great story at all from Mr. Pellowski. I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a funny story or a serious story. There wasn't really a resolution. Oh well, you can't hit one out of the ballpark everytime. :>)

So really 3 good stories out of 4. Even the 4th was alright, just not great. I'll give the book 3 3/4 stars. Money well spent, but I know Mike can do better work.

Misprinted stories? Please explain.

Um,...that sounds really odd. WHY does Betty do this? An explanation (if there is one) would be nice.

It sounds like a slice-of-life story, which is essentially what my Supergirl fanfic series is. That's fine with me.

My Creative Writing teacher in college said "A good story doesn't have a happy ending or a sad ending. It just ends."

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

Hi Tuxedo Mark,

My first copy of Betty 163 was missing the first 3 pages of the first story and the last two pages of the last story. In their place were the last 3 pages of the first story and the first two pages pages of the last story plus the fan art page respectively.

All clear? ...LOL

Rather than get my money back, I went and bought another copy. I'm saving this one cause its unique.

In "Dressing Downer" I liked the idea that Betty does put some thought into her outfits. People do judge others by the clothes they wear. Even though she's not the fashion plate that Veronica is, she still thinks about how people view her. That read very true to life for me.

As far as "Sales Help" goes, the story didn't end so much as stopped, at least for me. I do like slice of life stories, but they usually have a point -- however minor-- but this one didn't. Betty gets misunderstood? Betty can't do her job? Betty is helpful but keeps messing up the situations? I didn't see a point. Maybe I'm trying to read too much into it. As I said I did like it, it just felt like something was missing... like macaroni without cheese. Its OK but not my favorite.

Thanks for the compliments on the review.  They're coming easier for me.

Gregg

PS Do you have a link for the Supergirl fanfic? Is it about Kara? I'd like to read it....

Hehe, cool.

I have a Supergirl issue (#62 of Peter David's run; Linda has to stop an assassination attempt on Lex) with the pages stapled in the wrong order.

I later bought a correct copy, but I've sold most of my post-Crisis Supergirl comics, keeping only the misstapled copy, the deaf school issue, and the 2 issues that printed my letters.

In "Dressing Downer" I liked the idea that Betty does put some thought into her outfits. People do judge others by the clothes they wear. Even though she's not the fashion plate that Veronica is, she still thinks about how people view her. That read very true to life for me.

Cool. What are Betty's reasons for rejecting each outfit and ultimately choosing the final one?

Ah, okay.

No problem. :)

Them, not it.

Yes, I do, but I'll post it later. I'm waiting until I get the most recent issue (which should have been up at the end of December) up.

But I can tell you what it's about. Yes, it's about Kara Zor-El, but it's a new universe. It's not based on the comics (except for using some of the characters and making joking references to dumb storylines from the comics).

Basically, this started out as a 12-issue prequel series in 2002. "Smallville" had recently premiered, and I was inspired to do the same thing for Supergirl. I changed her origin, so she wasn't raised on Argo City; she was born on Argo Space Station and sent to Earth soon after, where she was raised by Fred and Edna Danvers in Leesburg, Virginia, as Linda Lee Danvers.

Also, the series is VERY slice-of-life. Each story is less like a story and more like a series of incidents. Some have the justification of revealing something about Linda (even if it's just a movie or TV series that she likes). Others are just there.

The writing is frequently plain and dry and often uses copy-and-paste for similar scenes. This is to emphasize the reality-based nature of the universe that the series is set in. Linda is a super-hero in an ordinary world, and, if not for her super-powers, her life would be pretty boring (and still is a lot of the time).

I've been told that my Supergirl is rude. I sometimes have her react to situations in ways that I never would but felt like, so, yeah, she's not exactly nice all of the time.

Anyway, I'll get the link to you eventually.

She chooses a lovely business suit that gives her a air of self confidence, mainly because she has a test she wants to do well in.
