  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Biollante: ok so shouldn't Joe Quesada know that? lol  It made him look a bit stupid imo.
    May 21, 2012, 07:57:37 AM
  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)
    May 21, 2012, 07:23:13 AM
  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

  • Biollante: Joe Quesada was drawing Thor on some Disney promo, and he drew him flying with his hammer on his side, now I'm not a Thor junkie, but isn't that actualy inaccurate, doesn't he fly by being dragged by his hammer???

Christian Archie Comics

Wow, just wow. Did the editotrs at Archie Comics allow it, or was it a bootleg underground comic?
I think that artist Norm Breyfogle has shown remarkable restraint by not having Mr. Lodge twirl his mustache in every panel as the character's evil traits become more and more defined.-Chris Cummins http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/04/the_10_craziest_moments_from_life_with_archie_the.php

If I took a shot at writing an Archie movie, would anyone mind?
Only 12 credits to go before I can purchase a sticky post.

Yes, it was officially allowed by Archie, at least according to Archie: A Celebration of America's Favorite Teenagers (a great book if you ever get the chance to read it).

I never understood the necessity for a "Christian" Archie edition, but may well throw those on bus seats like the Jehovah's witnesses' 'Watchtower' or 'Awake!' mags I found on public transit and leave them for kids to find. Religion is supposedly controversial for mainstream comics or toons to handle, but Archies touched the issue by printing them on story plots of the christian persuasion.

Some of you may not know this: the first known Peanuts comics were printed on Christian themed weeklies back in the late 1940s. Charles Schulz had began his cartoonist career somewhere.

I don't think Archie actually printed them.  They just gave Spire Comics the license to make them.  So they're probably more non-canon than other Archie comics.  Still pretty stupid, but then again the owners of this company used to be extremely conservative (albeit Jewish and not fundmentalist Christian).  This stuff is pretty corny, but it's nothing I haven't been exposed to since my grandfather was a Baptist minister.

I'd like to know if any of these Christian comics were ever reprinted in digest format.  If not, a lot of the Al Hartley stories in the digests were preachy enough...LOL

I think he was told to keep the Christian themes out of official Archie Comics (as a reaction to one story he managed to get printed), so I really doubt it.  The Spire Comics seem to be long-form Bible tracts.  They don't exist for any other reason than to proselytize people.

Well, I liked these a lot.  They were nice sugar-coated Christian comics, and I don't care what anyone else thinks.  And they helped make me an Archie fan again.

I would probalby read them out of sheer curiosity at least.  lol

I think I only saw one panel that was really kind of ofensive where Weatherbee is dissing other religions.  Seems kind of idiotic since the Goldlwaters are Jewish.

So some history on these books...

Al Hartley had become a born again Christian and was trying to put a more spiritual side -- at least from his point of view -- to his Archie work. The editor said no, but that led to a series of discussions that ended when the editor/publisher allowed Al to create some separate Archie stories his way, published by the Spire Christian line. As far as I know these books were aided by some of the regular Archie creators, including Bill Yoshida on lettering and Bill Grossman on colors. Dan DeCarlo also inked a few of these when Al was having trouble meeting his deadlines.

Taken on their own, they're kind of an odd but enjoyable series of non-canon books. They did have a lasting effect though... Betty came away from this series of stories as more pure and perfect than she had ever been portrayed before. Of all the characters, she was the one who expressed Al's viewpoint the best.

Hartley's art took such a weird turn in the Spire comics. Everyone got really glassy-eyed.

I read these as a kid, as my mother was (and is) a hardcore Christian. So as a comic fan, I found these were only available in Christian bookstores that I would visit with my mom. They're still wacky (weird) fun. I highly doubt Achie Comics would allow this to happen today. Here is a good overview of Al Hartley and how the Spire Archie Comics came about.

(sorry, I suppose because I'm new I can't post external links. Just go to Wikipedia and type in Spire Christian Comics, scroll to the bottom and under Resources click on the Al Hartley - Christian Comics Pioneer link.

Wow...okay, so I just finished reading the whole blog posting in detail, and seeing some of the descriptions of the stories, I know for a fact that I saw the story featured in Archie's Clean Slate in an Archie digest!  Now my question becomes, were they edited or changed?

did you find out whether or not that story was reprinted, captain hero? i am endlessly fascinated with these, and the thought of archie comics printing any of the stories in a digest (edited or not) blows my mind.

No, I haven't come across the story yet, but if I see it in my travels, I'll post the issue I saw it in.
