I picked the 50s, 60s and 70s... these mostly show my age though. There is a wide appeal in these stories and feel like the Archie gang weren't starting to repeat themselves as much as they do now.

The art and the writing were very good during this time, as I'm discovering now. Also the late 60s/early 70s is when Sabrina, Archie and Josie all had Saturday morning cartoons, which was my first exposure to these characters.

Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the other eras as well. The 40s were the beginning, and the 50s saw the characters getting very familiar, yet still fresh. The 60s and 70s played against huge social upheaval in the U.S., and this showed up occasionally in the stories. Despite that, the Archie books still retained their charm. The 80s and 90s were big on experimentation, which is always good. I've only read a few Archie stories that I really didn't like, which is a testament to their longevity and consistant quality. There are certain eras of DC and Marvel that I couldn't  stand (80s for both companies were not the best-- a few gems but mostly very forgettable in my opinion), but haven't found too many stories by the Archie group in a specific era that haven't had some redeeming quality.

Even the stories I though were just carbon copies (like That Wilkin Boy) have their own charm. The few features I haven't liked -Shrimpy, a steal from Peanuts-- and Super Duck -- which looks like a steal from Walt Disney-- I tend to skip over. They hold little or no appeal to me. Overall, the Archies have shined over the years.

Very well done.

Aw, I like Super Duck. Shrimpy, not as much. I don't think I had as much exposure to him as Super Duck. The old character I really like who hasn't been seen for a while is Pat the Brat (Dennis the Menace clone?). He was pretty funny and the thing about him and Super Duck was that they were fairly cantankerous.

I voted for the '80's, because I basically started collecting Archie comics in 1987, and most of the artwork I saw was from the '80's.

I do like a lot of the classic art from the '50's and '60's, though...and a lot of the best stories that happened to Archie and the Gang happened in the 1970's.

But, I'm still sticking with the '80's.  It's the time period that I'm most nostalgic about.

I used to love Pat the Brat comics...I'd run into the odd story in older issues of Little Archie digest magazines.

Come to think of it, around the time the Little Archie Digest came out, they released a Pat the Brat Digest too...but I don't know how many issues were released...for all I know, there could have been just the one.

I remember seeing a Super Duck strip a few years ago, but don't remember where. I've never heard of Pat the Brat, but one of the older books I got on eBay has a Pipsqueak strip in it.

1980s, because that's the best decade ever for everything.

1990s, because that's when I read a lot of new Archie stories.

2000s, because of new stories!

I also have some issues from the 1970s and enjoy them.

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

I picked 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s because of GREAT artwork, humor, and of course, Dan DeCarlo.;)

1960s are delightfully vintage, what with the retro clothes, slick drawing style (just look at how Veronica's raven locks shimmer beautifully,) and slapstick comedy, too.

1970s gave us GREAT facial expressions and body language (the girls looked especially lovable during that period. Same thing with Josie And The Pussycats.) Great fashion and pin-up cartoons, too. Perhaps Dan DeCarlo did THAT before his style changed again by 1980s?

1980s...DAN DECARLO!:D

I like the 50s, 60s and 80s.  80s because of Dan DeCarlo.  60s was a time of great innovation.  The Archie band and music started in the late 60s.  Archie music was very popular in its day (yes I remember).  Sabrina was developed.  The superhero line started or was given new blood.  Captain Pureheart began.  Some of the titles that were started in the late 50s really took off like Archie giants, Archie's Pals 'n' Gals and Life with Archie.  Archie at Riverdale, Archie and Me, Betty and Me and Everything's Archie began.  All of these lasted over 100 issues.  Josie and the Pussycats started to sing.
However the warmest spot in comicdom in my heart (after Barks) belongs to Bob Bolling and his 38 or so initial issues of Little Archie.  I think he is a superb artist!  So I added the 50s.

Welcome to the board bridger :)

I actually have one of those early Little Archie titles - #16, back when they were 80-page "Giant" issues published quarterly. That one was published in late 1960, but has a lot of great stuff in it.

I love the 50's, 60's and 70's the best.  It sort of dates me, but there you are.  The fifties had some really crazy stuff , things they can't do now.  One story in one of my 1950's B & V's has Betty dragging around her father's shotgun and waving it around in her efforts to shoot some dry ice into the sky to cause it to rain so Archie doesn't have to paint the fence and can take her to the movies.  Imagine Betty lugging around a shotgun these days--!!

Of course Dan DeCarlo set the tone for the 60's and 70's but there were some other great artists then, too--Harry Lucey and Bob Bolling come to mind.

The '60s is my favorite decade. You really can't beat the fact that the main titles were being drawn by Harry Lucey, Samm Schwartz and Dan DeCarlo. Of course there was also excellent work by Bob White, Bob Bolling, et al. I love the alien and horror covers of the early '60s (most of them by Bob White) and some of the mid and late '60s pop culture stuff is also great.

The '40s would be my second choice. It's really cool seeing the formation of the group and situations that would continue for the next 60+ years. Bob Montana is the major artist of the period (in quality if not quantity) although Harry Sahle, Al Fagaly, Ray Gill, Bill Vigoda and George Freese also were active at this time. Plus when you buy a copy of Pep comics, you get not only Archie but the Shield, Hangman, Black Hood, etc.

Finally, the '50s would be my third favorite. It has a lot of what makes the '40s and '60s special. Probably the best thing about the '50s is the run of Harry Lucey covers on Pep (approximately 116-135), but there's also the Montana cover to Archie #50!
