  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Biollante: ok so shouldn't Joe Quesada know that? lol  It made him look a bit stupid imo.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)
    May 21, 2012, 07:23:13 AM
  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

  • Biollante: Joe Quesada was drawing Thor on some Disney promo, and he drew him flying with his hammer on his side, now I'm not a Thor junkie, but isn't that actualy inaccurate, doesn't he fly by being dragged by his hammer???

Thanks for the before and after, Johanna. It's funny that Archie feels a need to "update" the art to reflect currrent trends. I wonder if DC and Marvel do the same thing....

It's called vintage Captain :P anyways right when I saw that pinup I said I want to see what the original one looks like, since it looks like DeCarlo's work from the 50's! Thanks Joanna

Lots of companies "update" or have updated their stories.  Will Eisner used to do it in THE SPIRIT and Mort Weisinger regularly had it done in Superman Family titles.  Archie does it a lot, too.

A lot of reprinted Archie stories in digest comics have those kind of updates; CD players replace record players, references to what year it is are updated, etc.  I remember one Archie Digest story, that was obviously from the 40's or 50's, making reference to Pokeman cards, most likely in place of some other popular item of the time.

On one hand, I can understand that they want to make reprinted stories seem current to modern audiences, but on the other hand, it is a reprint of a VINTAGE story.  If kids can see Beaver Cleaver using a record player on television, why is it a problem for them to see Archie Andrews using a record player in the comics?   Hmmm...

I agree that reprints should be unaltered, but I also wonder how many kids watch old sitcoms.

Betty Cooper + Cheryl Blossom. It's inevitable.

I don't particularly like the overly done gradients that've been added to the old DeCarlo pin-ups. They seem to detract from the line art. I guess I can understand why certain aspects were updated, just in keeping with trying to keep Archie and its characters fresh and "now" but, I definitely agree with Johanna that there's "...some completely unnecessary computer recoloring and shading..." Regardless, it's still DeCarlo, even in it's revamped version, so I like it.

This is another reason I would love to see some "Archie Archives".  Even when getting reprints in the digests and such, it can be hard to figure out what is being reprinted and whether any alterations have been made.

Good eye finding this one!

Reprints aimed at us (the hardcore Archie fans) yes, they should be unaltered!

I also wonder how many kids watch old sitcoms.

they don't, my now eighteen year old niece watches and enjoys black and white television shows and all of her friends just don't get the appeal. I lived with my sister the first few years of her life, she watched them with me and she brags that she learned it from me and her friends are just hopelessly in the dark!

I can understand why certain aspects were updated, just in keeping with trying to keep Archie and its characters fresh and "now"

Correct the main reason Archie has succeeded all these years is always being up to date and in touch with teen fads, so I don't mind any updating done on reprints that are intended for Archies prime audience, 8-12 year old mostly girls.

But this one (below) really bugged me, they only changed Mrs A, there are rotary phones and TVs with rabbit ears unaltered in the story, they just updated Mrs A. I think you just change her hair color to match todays Mrs A and leave the rest alone. Most kids would buy that she lost weight.

We were just talking about this story a little while ago in another topic too, but I couldn't find that.

original from 1972

reprint from 2008
