  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Biollante: ok so shouldn't Joe Quesada know that? lol  It made him look a bit stupid imo.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

YELLOW SKIES...has anyone else noticed this?
« on: December 01, 2007, 07:51:23 PM »
In perusing all the great old and new Archie Comics covers that a certain member has posted in this forum, I have noticed a preponderance of covers that depict an outdoor scene where the sky is YELLOW in color.  The most recent Betty and Veronica digest also has a yellow sky on the cover. Anyone else ever noticed this or find this at all remarkable? It seems to be a unique part of the Archie art style.

Just means they get lots of sun. In fact I'll take it a step further.... Riverdale only has sunny days unless weather plays a part in the plot.

Well, yellow is definitly a color you see during sunsets and sunrises, but mid-day yellow sky seems a bit unusual at best. Of course in Riverdale it's the norm. .Of course in Los Angeles we sometimes have mid-day BROWN skies.

Yellow skies must be a Riverdale tradition.  Here's a book from the later 1940's with, you guessed it, a yellow sky:

Yep, this yellow sky thing was definitely a trend with Archie:

Wow, beautiful scans archieandme!! Are they yours? If so, what did you do to reproduce them? If not, where did you get them?

These are exactly what I envision for the reference site... :)

Thanks for the compliment.  They are my books.

I always used to have problems with the dot moire patterns caused when the color dots printed on the cover were distorted after they were scanned.  I finally started managing to get clean scans by overscanning the picture and then smoothing the image.

So for these, I'd scan them at full size, except at 300 dpi or so.  The scans would be huge but you could then smooth the image, which just blurs it, but there is enough detail still so that when you reduce it to a normal size for a web page, the dots were all blurred into each other so the scan looks clean and smooth.

It took some practice but I have been able to get it to work pretty consistently now.

I agree with you, I would like to see the reference site to have nice images.  Comics.org is a great source to find cover scans but higher quality images would be nice.

I usually do my scans at 200 dpi... might have to try 300.  Not sure what you mean by "smooth the image". One of the things I lack is Paintshop Pro -- acf27 and MJB do wonders with that program though. I use Paint.net for image editing, mainly 'cause its free.

I scan at 200 dpi, crop close to the edge, then play with the colors until they're vibrant. Then I resize to 600-1000 pixel width for GCD purposes.

Part of my problem is that I'm self-taught and don't understand how to add images together to make a new pic -- kind of like acf27's photo manipulations in his gallery. One of these days I'll figure it out...

I'm using an old cheap image software called photomax.  Polaroid used to own it but sold it to Epson so it is usually bunded with their software.  I have photoshop 7.0 somewhere but since I don't do anything professionally, it was kind of cumbersome trying to learn the finer points.

I think the smoothing I'm referring to is equivalent to softening the image in photoshop or some other products.  It is essentially blurring the pixels into each other.   I liked photomax because it's the only cheap graphic software I ran into that lets you specify specific pixel size and resolution for images.  Some of the other lower priced software packages seem to dumb it down so much so that you don't have a lot of control.

Remind me of the old Saturday morning cartoon, "Richie Rich Adventures", where the sky is always bright yellow.

Oh, and the sun has a face, too. ;)

This is a dream cartoon world, of course.

It depends on your scanner and your scanning software, but some of these do have a setting to eliminate the miore patterns on scanned images. And of course Photoshop and Corel Photopaint have tools to reduce this problem after scanning. Both are FUN softwares to play with.
BTW, these scans are very well done...and both have yellow skies too. Love that classic Veronica in the sun dress...so cute.

Re:  Veronica in the Sundress, I always loved that era.  She and Betty were supposed to be 16-17 years old but Al Fagaly made them look quite a number of years ahead of poor old Archie.
